View Full Version : Thoughts and pricing on VY SV8
Afternoon,
Would like some thoughts on peoples views on the SV8's.
I have always been into the sleeper V8 look (such as debadged Exec with V8 etc)
I saw a Black VY SV8 at City group auction on the weekend, manual, cloth trim, 40Kms for $24,500.
Car was very neat and I spied a set of extractors and a aftermaket exhaust on it. Is this a fair price?
My idea is to keep the weight down, no body kits and then spend the money on mods. (ie diff, clutch, edit) Is there anyting you really miss from an SS compared to the SV8 mechanically? What diff ratios do these run?
Thanks for your thoughts.

Hi there,
I just bought a VY SV8 myself (about 6 weeks ago) so I'll take a stab here:
As far as I am aware of pricing, that is decent price for a car with only 40,000kms. If it is a series 2, that is even better value, although I do prefer the wheels on the series 1. I paid $27,900 for my series one black auto with 43,000kms onboard. This was on a trade-in though at a Holden dealer, where you would always expect to pay a premium. The car was in excellent condition as well and came with the optional power windows/side airbags/cruise control pack.
I think mechanically the SV8 is very near identical to the SS. All you will be missing is the schmick body kit, luxury extras like climate control etc and a few other minor items like the cupholders. I think the VY diffs ratios were 3.07 for the auto and 3.46 for the manual.
I agree with you I prefer the more modest look of the SV8 and it does mean that not every cap-backwards kid in a rex will try to drag you from the lights. In my case it also attracts a slightly cheaper insurance premium than the SS (Justcar insurance).
Hope this helps...

i paid 27k for my series 1 sv8 last april with 48k on the clock with no mods at the time great car has the k pack with side air bags and cruise ans rear electrics
i agree the sleeper look is great im removing the rear spoiler off mine shortly with the only cosmetic mod a chev grill which look heaps better the the stocko one goodluck with your purchase mate 24k with 40k on the clock is good, it is in wa anyway

Mechanically (engine wise) they are exactly the same.

Don't bet on that!! Rex boys will attempt to drag off anything that sounds V8'ish or has a rear spoiler.
BTW, the later than VY model SV8's look extremely SS'ish.
I often wonder what the SS boys think about Holdens decision to produce an SS replica at around 9k cheaper.
Well you guys did OK.
My SV8 cost me $43k driveaway in 2003. New car buyers always cop a beating don't they? That's a major reason why I think I'll avoid another V8 . . . unless the new car discount is VERY generous. If Holden can't buil.d a car that better holds its resale value, they'll need to look after me when I'm next in the market.
Yep - I like the SV8. No front spoiler to whipe out on car park kerbs. A bit lighter. Sad that the SV8 doesn't have more supportive seats. Also, the deletion of body side protection moldings is crook. I got a set of Berlina strips sprayed up and fitted. I hate parking dents.
The less hoony looks of the SV8 may mean that the car more easily slips past the Highway Patrol guys too. Just about every man and his dog has a spoiler these days - I'm not sure that they would count for much. A barking V8 exhaust is likely to give the game away though.
If Holden offers a sweat heart deal in the future, the new L76 SV8 in blue sounds OK.

I got a new quote for insurance on mine today and they said market value was $24 500 so you are not far off the mark.
:( paid $47000 for it just over two years ago, oh well thats life!!

My point exactly Ms SV8,
We're both in the same boat. $22k depreciation over two years? Man oh man!! That's a hell of a BIG hit!
I'd say without a shadow of a doubt that it's time to sit down and do some sums. Which brands of cars best hold resale value HAS TO FACTOR INTO PURCHASE DECISIONS!!
I steered away from the WRX partly because of insurance costs. I've checked out the rates of depreciation on the WRX and the SV8 and now suspect that I made the wrong decision.
The new WRX has a torquier 2.5L engine so it's closer to the top of my new car short list.
Big cars are on the nose with the buying public. That's gonna impact on V8 enthusiasts such as us. If Holden continues its discount V8 purchase pricing, I might be encouraged to buy yet another V8 BUT the discount would have to be significant. Blind Freddy can see where petrol prices are going and we don't need a scientific calculator to see how that will hit V8 resale value!
If Holden doesn't offer VERY attractive new car deals (and given that V8's will drop in value quickly with high oil prices), the obvious solution will be to buy our cars when they are 12 - 24 months old. Let somebody else take the big hit in the back pocket.
I wouldn't be at all surprised in Holden moves back towards smaller lighter cars and engines. The new V6 is 200 cc smaller. Rumour has it that HSV is considering Euro models with turbos. Mr Holden - how about a Torana 3.6L turbo?? REAR WHEEL DRIVE OF COURSE (although AWD might be OK).

IMHO .. yep it's a pretty good price .. but I'm sure people will tell you that you can get an SS for the same price somewhere. I could never find those "bargain" cars when I'm looking.
I too have been hammered by the SV8 depreciation, but not as bad. My car was originally my salary-sacrifice car @ Telstra, which I bought when I left. Its an April'03 VY1 and cost me $28000 in Nov'04 .. but I'd racked up a LOT of kms on it by then.

another of the advantages of the SS... as of october 2005 my 3yo SS is valued at 35k. the sv8 on your figures dropped 50% in 2 years, my SS hasn't.
Plus I prefer the better seats amd interior of the SS...

On the other side of depreciation - I paid $36,000 drive away brand new for my VYII SS Ute in Feb 03.
Just added another mod (Lowered) and told Just Cars - they told me then the market value of my car is $36,900....gotta love that!!

Hi chillicat,
Yep. That's the sort of deal that would encourage me to step into another Holden V8. If Holden wants to share the pain of depreciation, then they may keep me as a customer. Failing that, I've reached the conclusion that there are better options out there. Options may be buying a 2nd hand V8 or a WRX 2.5L A recent online review of the L76 states that Holden V8 sales are OK. Their recent incentives will have contributed to their sales results of course. These incentives I suspect might be there to counter petrol price concerns.

VY11 SV8 RRP $40940 although as with the current trend towards discounting... RRP was not paid by the majority of new owners...myself included.$35200 :driving:away with floor mats / tint chucked in as a sweetner and that was buying as a fully fledged Joe Blow puplic buyer.. new..not a demo
On the other side of the coin, the black SV8 at Cities is carrying Mr Shipmans floor load of 2K at $24,500......but you did not get that from me :hide:

According to Redbook an '03 SS is only worth $20,300 to $22,700 as a trade-in, or $24 to $27,700 as a private sale so I think you would struggle to get $35k for it, so it also has dropped a similiar amount.
Don't know how accurate these Redbook valuations are though?

Here's a different viewpoint. Given that the price of petrol has slowed the sales of large cars and V8s a bit, does that mean that there will be less of them in the future. Perhaps if we can hang on for a while, V8s might be rare enough to claw back some of what they lost?
It won't be any time soon, say within the next 3 years, though. Perhaps in 2012 my 2003 one owner LS1 will be something a bit unique?

You blokes are dreaming if you think your three-year-old flogged-out SSs are "worth" $35K becaues of some insurance valuation. It's hand-in-pocket fantasy
My VT is insured for $13,800
I paid $5K
Thanks to all for for the replys,
Some good info in there, especially thanks to Chris and Mark.
I can't justify a new SV8/SS at the moment, so for me a several year old second hand model that has had some depreciation makes sense for me. (with a few mods of course!)
Thanks for the help team.
Cheers

my 03 series 1 sv8 is insured for 28k agreed value with sgio, in reality, in a sale situation it's not worth that but if i gets stolen or written off i'd be more than happy to take the 28....but i agree that the insurance valuation is no reference to what the car is really worth

I know the insurance valuation is not comparitive to sale value, but my insurance valuation is relative to the other poster's insurance valuation, and that is what I was talking about. One of the reasons I'm not selling the SS as what I can get for it is nowhere near what I'd accept, therefore I'll hold onto it.

I feel the same with my VX SS, I refuse to play the game and lose $25k or whatever in 4 years, I am just going to hang onto mine only done 40K and if need be buy a second medium size car down the track and keep this one as my toy, I am over this continually updating just a waste of money. I think the only way I would update into a later V8 would be to buy private at the right price and sell mine private at the right price.

POINT BEING IIVTII that if I write-off or get my car stolen I get $36,900 - sweet deal in my eyes matey... not that I would get $36K if I sold it.

Theres been a fair few threads already on the comparisons between SV8s / SSs.
Personally, i bought a VYII SV8 approx 9 months ago... 5000km on the clock, heavily optioned (leather and a bunch of other HBD stuff) and i paid 30k (Holden price since i was trading in my old calais)
I don't believe the VY SS' have climate control from factory? I looked at a few when i was car hunting and i don't remember seeing it fitted (feel free to correct me though!).
Reality is, my aircon is used infrequently, and after owning a fully optioned Calais I found all the additional bling didn't do much for me personally anyway, so I decided to save the $$ this time round. (so much for that... i'm about to get married!)

A 3y.o VY II SS ute worth $37K? - what's a new VZ one worth now - couple a grand more drive away - BRAND NEW. That puts your old car into stark perspective.
Quite frankly, whatever the "Agreed/market value/ Insurance Value" on a car is irrelevant. The chance of it being written off/stolen tomorrow/whenever is fairly remote and occurs infrequently in the Insurers overall view.
As most people here quite rightly know, the only true $ value of a car is what you can get for it on the open market tomorrow from an average genuine buyer.
You can also bet that if you want to hold onto an artificially high agreed value, then they will load up your premium accordingly. No free lunch etc.

mate i just got two questions.
1. how did you only pay 36k when i rang around australia and got a best price of 41k for my ute new in january 03.was yours less gst and all those other discounts like gm mastercard etc?
2 in feb 03 you could only get series 1 utes as the series 2 utes didn`t come out till late august.so what`s going on there?
p.s i`m not punching on,just enquiring.:)

Hi Markone2,
That sounds like great value and it's the sort of figure that would tempt me into another V8. If it had the L76, I think I'd be on the blower to Zupps.
I'd be interested to see what sort of trade-in they offer. They normally offer peanuts on the tarde-in when they drop their pants on the new car price so the change over is not too much different.
