hi everyone,

i have just bought a vy ss ute for work, just a few mods such as cat back exhaust, 19inch rims and lowered 2 inches with pedders suspension and a maloo r8 spoiler on a hardtop cover. its an auto.

now my mum has a vy ss sedan auto as well, my question is, compared to the sedan the ute is slow, and just not as responsive. is that normal?? also wen i put it into park the ute makes a rattling noise sounds like it is coming from under the drivers door.

the ute is still under holden factory warranty and its only done 35 000kms, but is it noraml that it doesnt feel as quick, my tray is full, but it just doesnt feel right.

Also where in syd do you recommend to take the ute for servicing (near parramatta) as its coming up, i also want them to chek the ute over so that i can take it to holden and get things fixed before warranty ends.

thanks

Dave...

When you say "my tray is full" How full do you mean ? Not all cars of the same engine type perform the same. I had aVYSS ute auto, which I thought went O.K. for totally stock. I had a run with a customer at work who had the same ute but had a different throttle body, exhaust and SS inductions cold air intake and I smoked him. Has your car had any mods done or maybe it needs a good tune/edit !

well i own a car detailing business so with the stuff in the bak mayb lowers it an inch. all it has is exhaust for performance, not even an aftermarket air filter. i was reading around, seems like i have to take it to Marrano enhancements Croydon, just for the service and the noise it makes in park, and i will ask him, its probably just me thinking its slower cause my other car is 270rwkw skyline lol. but compared to my mums sedan the ute is slow.

MR R33, Did you end up finding out what the rattling noise was on your ute under the drivers side door? I have a VZ SS ute that has the same problem occasionally. Drives me nuts. Haven't found out the problem yet.

I know with the VZ ute & sedans that they have a different diff ratio. Think ute has 3.46 & sedan 3.73. Would the VY be the same? That could be the performance difference.

Cheers, MW

Back in the days of the 5.0 litre V8, the utes were rumoured (and I stress the word "rumoured") to have been allocated all the bad batches of V8s. Maybe this is the case with the VU-VZ utes?

Not sure myself about the different ratios but if this is true then it would make a noticable difference on acceleration.

VY utes have the same gears in the rear as sedans.

My SS ute goes like the clappers now and went hard from brand new pre-edit and gears etc

I've since found out that the rattling metal type noise from near my cats or front right hand wheel was a stuffed wheel bearing on the front right side. Now fixed under warranty & the sound has completely gone. All good.

i think it is the stuff in the back that makes it feel different as i can feel the difference when i take off the hard tonneau and empty the back .... it feels slightly squirtier .........

larger wheels make a difference, mates vt has noticeable difference between 19's and standard (16") stockers. in theory the ute should be quicker but your extra weight wouldnt help, also dont forget a standard ls1 isnt the torquiest thing off the line.

Hi guys while you are talking about the diff ratios in the ute can someone suggest the ratio to use in mine.I have a VY SS 6SPD man lowered on 19s had a mafless tune 4 into 1 and 3 inch exhaust but it needs a slightly lower ratio to speed things up a bit, wots the standard ratio and wot do you sugest?

mate if I had to choose between 3.91s or 4.11s again I know which I'd go for. the M6 is geared enough to have good driveability of the 4.11s and retain good (on most accounts) fuel economy.

only offset is mine with 3.91s I get 1st/2nd wheelspin, 4.11 would be exspensive on tyres
