Silvoseal.

Comes in a little cardboard cylinder with tin ends. Pour in, wait a couple of minutes and leak is gone!!!

Temporarily, of course ;)

what would the diff. be mate
i thought that the substance you put in finds its way to the leak and then clogs it up.
temp measure though ??????

Silvoseal works by welding itself to the steel bits I think....or something like that

I had a leak in my radiator, and was scared at the cost to fix it. I got some cheap stop-leak stuff from supercheap or repco or something, put it in, stopped leaking in a few minutes and has been perfect since!! Well worth it.

Mind you, my leak seemed to be coming from around the plastic joiny bit on the side? So depends what type of leak as to the outcome I guess...Worked wonders for me though. I've been from sydney to brisbane and back in a weekend with a trailer on it, and to canberra and back, and out past the blue mountains, and all my daily driving!!! No problems at all so far :)

I've used Bars Radiator Stop Leak in my work car no problems. I think Supercheap's got 20% off day happening so good time to pick it up.

But please bear in mind that when you are whore-ing through the outer suburbia of NSW and the temporary plug fails, then your engine could very quickly become a 'new boat anchor!!!!" It doesn't take long to cook an engine as the system pressure is quite high and it won't take long to dump the coolant.

nah these cars have a coolant level warning, as soon as the header tank level drops you'll know before its too late. unlike only having a temp gauge which can not give you a warning if it all dumps quickly

Exactly mate
and my level warning sign [ near the 250k's on the speedo ]
is working perfectly
hence the question

thanks everyone for your input

Here's a good priced PWR radiator, it's the same as the one I had in my old SS & that the red one tonner & my one tonner has. http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=48904

Save a few bucks and nab it.

Ive used dad's old trick of pepper a couple of times, once in a mates old telstar with a leaking water pump, and the other on a leaking bottom hose on my girls v6 vt.

Be carefull with what you put in your cooling system as it can have an adverse effect on your water pump. LS1 water pumps are not cheap.

I haven't bought a radiator since 2002 when I needed a newie for my then VN SS, I rang all the radiator places around the area checked the prices of recores and new ones and to my surprise a Brand New one from the local Holden dealer was the cheapest. Might pay to check a few places including Holden spares.

If the leak is between the plastic side tanks and the aluminium core, you might be able to fix the leak by adding a bit more crimping force to the lugs that wrap around the side tanks.

I'm assuming that the Gen III radiator is the same as the VN V6 unit. I've crimped the VN V6 clasps home a bit tighter and fixed a radiator leak permanently.

Failing that, I wonder what the PWR radiators are worth? I believe the radiator crowds make after-market brass radiators to suit the aluminium/plastic crap we're dished up these days. A brass radiator is gonna be a lot more resistant to electrolysis. Aluminium is used as a sacrificial anode to protect cables and other metalic underground infrastructure and electrolysis in a cooling system would attack aluminium parts too.

So keep an eye out for black radiator water - I believe it's a sign that there might be a bit of corrosion going on.

As PAH said, if the leak is coming from around the seal on the end tanks, just crimp the metal lugs tighter and it pulls the plastic tank hard up against the rubber seal.

If the plastic is cracked, throw it.

Price the radiator through a wrecker. They sell new imported aftermarket radiators and sell them pretty cheap. A VS V6 was $165 new.

I very recently bought a new radiator for my VR V6, cost me $120 brand new from OzCarParts in Smithfield. Maybe give them a call and check the price of an aftermarket radiator for a LS1 (they deal in all holden/ford parts), might be better than a temporary additive, and way i see it, is its cheap insurance!
