Not all that familiar with Magnas but my first thing to check would be the throttle body and butterfly area, buy some carby cleaner and give it a good spray and get a clean rag and give that area a really good clean, it may have a build up of crud and the butterfly might be closing completely and stalling the car. When it is cold it may have some sort of fast idle mechanism that holds the throttle open slightly thus allowing it to run. Worth a look.

Try the idle control solenoid.
Common problem apparantly what I was told when I got the wifes Magna fixed for doing the opposite - it would rev up when idling to 2000 odd rpm sometimes.
No reason why the reverse couldn't happen though.
Not a cheap part either !.

Just fixed the same problem in my dad's '92 Magna V6 auto. Started & idled fine when cold - but coughed & spluttered when warm. Had only done 40,000k's - but all short trips/city driving & probably never at WOT.
Anyhow, turns out the fuel injectors were blocked. Had one of the mobile cleaning companies come out & remove them. They took the injectors back to the workshop & cleaned & flow tested them. Then installed later same day.
Runs like a new car now.
I had tried fuel additive /cleaners etc - but they didn't make much difference.

I would say the idle speed control motor is faulty, lost count how many i've changed over the years. They usually fill up with carbon ( due to worn engine ) and stop the pintle moving. Clean it and if still no luck you may have to source a reco item as the windings inside also go over time. ;)
davidta's symptom was a classic case of a stuck pintle

id be starting of with a throttle body clean, and go from there. also any check engine light on, ive also had a coolant temp sensor do this when its cold fine, but when it warms up the coolant temp sensor doesnt respond causing a extreamly rich idle.
unless your idle speed control motor is failing when warm this is alo another very common problem, as the component heats up, there is 4 windings inside the idle speed control motor, one winding could be going open circuit.
best way to test the idle speed control motor is under load, the idle speed contol motor has 6 pins on the connector, disconnect the wiring plug to the idle speed control motor, and supply power to the middle to pins, then get a test light and connect one end to earth and connect the other end to the idle speed control motor and check to see if the test light lights up on the other four pins, if it lights up on all 4 its ok, if it lights up on 1,2 or 3 the idle speed motor is faulty.
give it a go. but be careful not to short anything out.

my ute was doing exactly the same thing as your magna.
turns out that i had vacuum leaks on the intake manifold where it bolts onto the engine block. Carburetor base plate was leaking through a stripped screw. adjusted the carby float to half way in the fuel bowl. overall runs like a champion. never had a prob since.

just a little bit different it should affect the car more so when cold, cause the car runs a air flow meter, and if it did it would have a rough idle, and to have a bad air leak, it wouldnt be ok when cold as well.

yep.
was only after my motor had done a couple of kays and warmed up that it would drop out on the idle.

sorry if this is a bit off topic but i have used a mobile injector guy in sydney for a few years now,he does a similar job.
he takes the injectors off, flow tests them, decides which need a little more attention then proceeds to clean all the injectors in a ultrasonic bath.
then flow tests again if any need more cleaning he does this again,he was charging about $150 not to shore how much now.once again sorry if it's off topic but it made shit loads of differance.:yup:

I think the problem might be due to the excessive load the poor car has to carry around.:moon:
