May sound like a silly question, but was it custom made or are there pre-fab units available for the current specs Holden utes?

Also, street legal?

Yes it was custom made, but the manufacturer made a jig 4 it, so now anyone with a vu-vz ute can just order, pick a colour and pay deposit over the phone, then he will fit it when it is ready, wait time is 1-2 weeks.

Cost is $1300- full chrome moly total weight 19kg's

Fully legal in Victoria, other states would have to check with their local authoritys.

They are easy to pull out, 8 bolts each, I was going to leave them out when not racing , but they take up no room at all so im going to leave them in, handy for an old bloke like me to grab onto to get out lol.

It took 2 of us about 2 hours to put it in, its a very VERY tight fit, had to take out the seats, steering wheels and console.

It is a very nice piece of craftmanship and looks great in the ute.

It will take very little modifing to fit into a sedan, its just the rear supports need to be made longer, but it is easier to get the unit in and out no need to take any interior out.

Nice car, just watched the video.....very impressive. You should put a shelf on the roll cage to mount your Falcon scalps on.

Very cool Sly, very cool!

Just a question though, is the cage drilled and bolted into the chassis now? and with the back shelve area do u have anything bolting/screwing into it?

Is the plan to have it Andra approved for 10's?

Yes, legal to 10.00, 9.99 and under you would need to add the front 2 legs and the bar across the windscreen. Ill never see 9's

Yes it does uncle, HP-F Wednesday, Calder Friday.... is it Friday yet?

Its all bolts through the body onto steel plates under the ute with the nuts welded to them, the rear parts bold onto the back shelf again with 2 steel plate with the nuts welded to them on the opposite side. Everything is supplied and fitted in that price.

This is all as per the ANDRA roll cage/bar rule 4.4.7.1

Yes i must note that for anyone thinking about getting one in a ute, you wouldn't want to be any taller than 6ft.

Isn't a cage for 9.99 and under also required to be welded in rather than bolted in?

Look forward to hearing more progress with the ute now that you have a choice of drag venues again.

Another thing I had to do was the battery isolation switch.

ANDRA rule 4.8.1

All competition cars running faster than 11.99 1/4 mile require a battery isolation switch located in the battery location marker, capable of shutting off current flow and operable from the exterior of the vehicle. it is also recomended the sedan vehicles with trunk mounted batteries have the trunk key permanatly fitted to the lock.

I have put my battery in the tray and the isolation switch in one of the side panels of the tray.

It doesnt really state it, there are a few differant catagorys, heres the one that would apply to street reg cars.

4.4.7.1 Group 2, 3 & 4 Sedans, pro Stock, Hot Rods & Off Street

Street registered cars with a fixed steel roof and unmodified monocoque construction running between 10.00 and 10.99 1/4 mile and less than 140mph.

Mounting Points:
Mounting points not compatible in strength with the roll bar material should be reinforced with a steel plateof at least 56 sq cms - 9 inch square, welded or using four 10mm / 3.8 bolts.

Same rule applies for street registered vehicles running 9.99 to 8.00

From what ive read here, its not until you are running a
Dragster, Funny Car, Altered, Hot Rod "Open" or Doorslammer that the rules change regarding cage design and welding, it all gets very technical then.

Thanks for the info Sly, any chance of getting some pics of where you put your battery? I'm planning on moving my battery to the tray as well.

Where abouts did you run your cabling, under the car or through the cabin, under the carpet?

Prob stupid questions, but will the cage need to be padded for road use purposes and are there mounting plates that need to go under the floor to mount the bolts through ?

Very tidy by the way, must only just clear the interior light looking at the pics.

When do the MUDFLAPS go on SLY? (J/K :stick: )

I take some and post em up during the week, the battery box is basicly sitting in the middle on top of the fuel cell cover, right next to the NOS bottle.

I ran the 4 gauge cable from the engine bay accross behind the motor through the little hole that is already in the fire wall on the passenger side, then along under the door sill trim/carpet through those vents behind the passenger seat to the switch.

Ill take some photos of the whole things and post em up as a how to during the week.

Excellent, looking forward to it. I have so many things to do with my ute, but so little time & money. :-(

Hopefully in a couple of months i'll even get back to the track myself.

If you look back to one of the earlier post i posted the Vic Road Rules link, only needs to be padded in places you might hit yourself on in an acident, I bough 2 900mm bits of CAMS approved padding $20- each from VPW, ive cut them up to fit on some of the main bars, but its not really needed, ill leave them off except when racing.

heres a photos of the mounting plated supplied, "bloody hard taking a picture of them laying on your back out in the dark" lol Only took me 20 shots to get 2 half good ones.

The battery move is a easy cheap one, I got the box and all the fittings including about 6mts of 4 gauge cable in a kit from VPW for $70-, you dont need anything else, except maybe some beers.

ere it is here, disreguard the price on their website, it was about $70-

Did you only redirect your power cable and not your earth as well?

You earth the original negative cable that was on the battery to the body in the engine bay and then run the new negative off the battery to the body in the back.

Easy pezy
