One-off Monaro set for life in a garage

22.02.2006

EMERALD’S Darryl Mattingley may just be the envy of Holden and Monaro fans everywhere.

The businessman, ironically a staunch Ford man, placed the top bid of $187,600 in the online auction for the last of the current generation of Holden Monaros at the weekend.

But even if Mr Mattingley had been outbid for the Monaro CV8, it is highly likely the vehicle would still be Emerald-bound with the second highest bidder also from Emerald.

Amazingly, in what was a worldwide auction, Mr Mattingley had to slog it out with fellow Emerald car enthusiast Albert Hajdu for the car, with the pair leaving a pack of would-be bidders behind at $160,000.

So why, you ask, would a Ford lover buy an iconic Holden? The answer was simple, it was the last one.
"It’s a one-off,’’ he said.

"It’s a specially-built thing and no-one else can have the same thing.’’

Mr Hajdu said his wife, Michelle, had said when Holden brought out the last 1200 of the Monaros it would be nice to own the last one.

"When it came on eBay I said, ‘we’ll have a bid on it’,’’ Mr Hajdu said.

With the auction nearing the end, Mr Hajdu said he had considered pushing his bid higher but opted not to.

"I knew who I was bidding against and instead of pushing him higher I thought I would just leave it at that. It’s coming to Emerald anyway.’’

Mr Hajdu had held the winning bid from Valentine’s Day and wasn’t outbid until Mr Mattingley placed the last bid just 85 seconds before the close of the auction at 11.10am on Sunday.

Mr Mattingley’s wife Shelly admitted the last-minute strategy definitely helped them come away with the car.

Both car enthusiasts, the Mattingleys said they were a little surprised at the price, which they considered relatively low. They had expected the car to fetch somewhere between $400,000 and $500,000.

So, what are their plans for the last Monaro?

"It’s not even going to be registered, it will be stored away and preserved,’’ Mr Mattingley said.

The couple will be flown to Brisbane on Friday where they will be given the keys to the car in a hand-over ceremony.

As for Mr Hajdu, Mr Mattingley said "of course he can come around for a look’’.

As many people suggested it will never be registered!!!!

Interesting to see how much he payed for it.
is bid of $AUD 187,600

I will be keeping my eyes open on the road tomorrow. Might even get to see it on the street.

There is a good chance I imagine that this will be either put on chocks. Or will only be rolled out at special events.

Micht make a point of being in the area there tomorrow as well. :)

I was talking to the owners son as he works at one of the mines near Emerald which I service, I was telling him about the whole eBay auction and the car. To that he gave me a smile and said, "The old man bought it!"

The plans for the car is to be trucked to Emerald where the car will stored in a shed on "padded" blocks.

It will be under lock and key and will be in the company of some early Fords, GT's and the like.

He plans never to register the car, as he is an avid collector after seeing some of his vehicles, he will look after it!!! It will look as good in 25 years as it will when he picks it up.

The crazy thing to all this "last Monaro bullshit" is that it will never be the last Monaro. How can it be! It was too good a seller. Holden left their options open & knowing Holden & the amount of shafting they have done to previous "good" customers, they will bring it back to boost sales at a later date.
This is the kind of garbage car makers in this country do & it's got to stop.Look at HSV.Big dollars for their cars when they are selling them..a couple of years down the track & they have a resale value the same as an Ecotech 3.8 Executive.
No,sorry.....if you believe all the crap these company execs tell you you'll also believe Peter Costello has decided to introduce zero taxes.

Well i read an interesting article in the latest JUST CARS magazine....they were featuring an article about the concept camaro and then in the last paragraph they quoted Bob Lutz as saying that work had already started on the next Monaro - due for launch in 2008!

Whether this was just their (mis)interpretation I dont know - but i havent heard anything else about this!

I have to agree with SV300.

I got sucked in to a limited edition HSV, paid the extra - and it may as well be an Acclaim with a V8 and a body kit !!!

I am very disspointed in Holden/HSV and tha marketing scams that are pulled on the ozzie public. Holden/HSV have done NOTHING to preserve the (so called) limited nature of my model.

My old man also bought a CV8Z. A special build number (not the last of course) it's in the garage too !! I said to him - " do you really think they'll stop a good thing like this? Let Ford come in with coupe and take over the market". He is confident it will remain a classic.

I remain sceptical - it seems that the great unwashed are happy to swallow the marketing stories while holden reap the $$$ benefit. I simply think it's a planned production outage while they gear up a nice unused factory somewhere in the US to keep making them (just look at the sales records in the US).

My next car, wont be a HSV and it certainly wont be limited edition either.

I spoke to an insider and was told thay were thinking very strongly about making the new manaro off of the camaro in the states as it has a newer floor pan. Just my 2 cents
