Hi,

Im sure someone knows the answer to this:

Would a 2006 Pontiac GTO purchased in the US meet the ADR guidelines/ compliance allowing me to import one back to Aus?

and if not.. how much work would it take to make it compliant?

Thanks
Deacs.

It would have to be converted to RHD wouldn't it (can LHD be driven in WA?)?

Seeing as Ford Mustangs are about $130k Aus from $30k Am it might be cheaper to buy a new HSV Coupe.

To be honest, I believe that the costs involved in gaining ADR compliance, ie, I am NOT sure that these vehicles have been complianced in Australia in their US configuration, plus shipping costs, plus conversion, would equal at the very least a brand new HSV GTO coupe.

It seems to be a great hassle, for not a lot of gain, but, if you wanna do it, I'd be speaking to someone from your Dept of Transport where you wish to send it and to Holden, possibly, to seek information as to whether the GTOs have Australian compliance.

Yeah, you're right. From memory they couldn't even sell them at $80K and ended up doing serious discounting to move them. Hence, Ford no longer bother with Mustangs. :lmao:

Im actually lving in the US at the moment and for the next 12 months... went down to the Pontiac dealership on the weekend and had a smick looking quicksilver 2006... as I as old my SV8 to come over its only right to bring one of these back

Im thinking about buying it here driving it for 12 months and then when we come back to Aus ill bring it back.

Reading the DOTAR rules I think I will be OK if one I have the car for at least 12 months, and I get the ADR etc.. I would drive it LHD until I decided to RHD it.. or who cares the rules state I can continue to drive LHD.

Mmmm may need to do some more digging on this.

Cheers

LHD is the killer and drive by noise. I can only comment about SA but unless the vehicle is over 30yrs old you can not legally register and drive a LHD vehicle (Specialty vehicles excepted e.g. street sweepers). Personally imported vehicles allow a few more freedoms. But it ultimately depends on the State Authority as even with DOTAR's approval to bring the vehicle in to Aust, it does not guarantee that it can be registered.

There have been guys on the Honda S2000 website who were in a similar situation to you. They loved there LHD American cars and wanted to bring it out to Australia when they emigrated out here, convert the car and drive it over here.

They could never get the numbers to stack up for a $70ishk Aus car.

Thinking back on it how hard would it be to convert back. Monaro dash, steering, pedals, etc from a wrecked car. I don't know if there were any changes in the shell LHD to RHD.

No, both RHD & LHD versions are almost identical. Personally, i wouldnt bother. Importing a vehicle is a lot of effort, not too mention alot of $$ for that you could just buy one downunder and a nice little bag of goodies to go with it. I have seen a pontiac GTO in melbourne but it may have been a front end conversion. If you really do want to import it remain optimistic as the conversion may be relatively cheap as in aus there are RHD monaro dashes aplenty. Your best bet is to visit www.corvette.com.au they will tell you everything you'll need to know about the process :burnout:

I dont think it would meet ADRS anyway because of exhaust emissions alone, America's laws are a little more relaxed then ours. Also you would not be able to bring the car into the country any way unless you privately owned the car in the US for a minimum of 12 months. The australian government do not allow any car to be brought into the country if it can readily be sold here in australia. This was put in place to protect the australian car industry against cheeper imports. as was my understanding.

Why would you bother?- Mightn't be so bad if you didn't have to convert to RHD, but you do, so as far as I'm concerned, what you're thinking about is a total waste of time, & money. You're better off waiting till you get back to Aus, then buying a Monaro, or a HSV GTO if you want LS2 in which case you'll get better brakes, trim, wheels etc etc, & used prices for these will have dropped by then as well.
Cheers, Pickles.

Um, I don't think it would be woirthwhile either, but 2006 GTO's are an LS2 identical to Z HSV's - power is an imperial 300kW is it not ?

I think ADR's would be the least of your probs.

Converting to RHD would be the biggest pain.

All in all though - whatever floats your boat.....

Im not sure what the go is in NSW, but out my way heaps of the USAF guys that are deployed to RAAF Richmond (if they are still there?) used to drive there US cars around here with NSW and QLD plates on them, have seen 1 Devil GTO (LHD) on the base around about 2 years ago, so must be able to do it somehow and I doubt it would be because there in the military.

Would look awesome over here though,

It might be a lot less of a pain than you think, a wrecked poverty pack vy, the firewall is glued in, a lot of dissasembly and reassembly but actually cutting and shutting I'd say zero. This really does sound like a job a crash shop could do. So what iff it cost a few grand its still cheap.

Hi,
I too lived in the USA (MI) for a while. When I run the numbers, it wasn't worth it, but if you must consider, try a C6 Corvette, or a large SUV. You can get one containered back for around $4K, When I looked (2000/2001) you could apply to eliminate one of the taxes the goverment usually makes you pay if you could show ownership at a address for 12 months.
Corvette clinic will charge you around $30K to convert to RHD.
Either of those will minimise risk in case you need to sell.....
Given I can buy a converted C5 for around $90K locally now, I'm glad i didn't do it.
