I have finally started.:D

First step was to secure some bits and pieces that I've had my eye on for a while now. Particularly a Bentley Turbo R interior and suspension. So with that task in mind I went shopping!
http://www.haroc.1337thing.com/ls1/Uncletone/IMGP0851.JPG

Whole truckload of bits, in another life in Japan was originally a Bentley Turbo R, so what I got was a complete drivetrain (motor, turbo, gearbox, diff, suspension etc) complete interior, all electrics, and front and rear cuts of the body. Basically a whole car.

Here is the engine, which I will sell to raise some money for my stroked and turboed LS1.
http://www.haroc.1337thing.com/ls1/Uncletone/IMGP0856.JPG

Nice set of gauges, steering wheel, electric shifter mechanism, air con, etc etc etc....
http://www.haroc.1337thing.com/ls1/Uncletone/IMGP0853.JPG

And a few discreet badges....that I may or may not fit to the car.
http://www.haroc.1337thing.com/ls1/Uncletone/IMGP0860.JPG

First step of the project is to strip he back half of the car completely (nearly done) then get the engine running so I can demo it. Also clean up the interior with the Leatherique stuff that I bought.

I shall keep you posted with pics and updates as this mammoth task unfolds!!

What Model Year is the Bentley? Don't get to hasty throwing things away, eg:

Gear Box, UP to about 91 they used the GM THM400 3 speed Auto. After this point in time they used the GM 4L80E, the ideal gearbox if you are doing a Gen T stroker. (incidently, Jaguar used the same gearboxes for the V12.

Diff, the early Turbo R's produced 600Nm of Torque and this increased over time to 900Nm of torque for the current Arnage Twin Turbo, so the Diff should be fine for what you want to do.

By the way, what model Rolls do you have, by the looks of the photo it seems to be a Silver Cloud. If it is a Series 2/3 Cloud the Bentley Turbo R motor will go straight in, its the same engine, apart from the Turbo, EFI and the 6.75L capacity versus the Cloud's 6.25L capacity.

Cheers

Matthew

I hope to have secured the car (finally!!) in a few weeks, a Silver Shadow 2. The Bentley is a 1988 model.

Yeah, the gearbox and diff can go into the Shadow, but I want to use a 4L80, and it is only a T400. The diff ratio is 2.69. A bit high for running down the quarter I would suspect....but perhaps I could source some different gears.... but I think the diff is Rolls Royce-specific, not sourced from another manufacturer.

Don't worry, I won't be throwing anything away....

An idea for the diff would be to see if the Bentley Continental T used a shorter ratio (the Conti T was the "Hot-Rodded" SWB coupe version of the Turbo R).

English car makers were also quite willing to do some very peculiar specifications for different foreign markets - I could almost imagine RR doing a short diff ratio for clients in the Swiss Alps, they are that sort of company. I don't know if you have got in touch with the Australian RR/Bentley Driver's Club, they would have a great deal of info on this sort of thing. Mind you you'd do well to say your planning to stick the Bentley Turbo R motor in the Shadow, they might die choking on their Pimm's if they find out you are sticking a Chev motor in it, GM gearbox not withstanding.

Not sure if Diff is RR specific, wouldn't be surprised if Jaguar used the same thing in the V12. The MKX and 420G used the Thornton Powr Lok (yes, thats how it is spelt - I think) LSD with 3.54:1 ratio and no one has told me it couldn't handle a V12.

Cheers,

Matthew

Good onya Tone !

Im looking forward to it progressing :)

Should be a mountain of work, I hope youve allowed for the little things that may go wrong as you go :)

Any idea on what ET and MPH you want, and what HP/KW figures you aiming for ?

Nice work, Tone.

Definately a project I'm looking foward to reading about on here.

So you're gunna end up with pretty much Flying Spur performance in an early Rolls body, without all the fancy gismos obviously...

Interesting indeed!

The Continental T used the same 2.69 ratio diff as the Turbo R I believe.
I'll be putting an independant version of a 9 inch in. That way I can run about a 3.5 ratio coupled with the overdrive of the 4L80 to give decent acceleration and higway cruising all in one.

Its hard to believe that RR would cast and machine their own gearsets, so if I can find out who made the gearsets maybe I can get a lower ratio for the original diff.

Believe it or not, a lot of younger guys are buying Shadows. I have talked to a few of them, not many have baulked at my ideas....as long as I start with a car thats down to start with of course!! The older guys naturally are horrified at my plans, which makes me all the more determined to do it :nyuk::flip3:

I did blow one V12 diff in my Jag with the stroked Chev....mainly due to axle tramp I suspect. The Thornton Powr-Lok (correct spelling!!) is only the LSD machanism used.....the diff itself was a Dana 44 I believe. Same for all the 6 cylinder and V12 cars, with the V12 cars having LSD, the 6's not.

Tough call there Bloo.

I want to use the Bentley Turbo R suspension, so I don't know whether the car will have good squat or not with that. I think it might.....the standard Shadow suspension counters squat somewhat with the hydraulic ride levelling system....

In any case, its a road car first. Squat will help at the drags, so if it has it, good. The 60 foot times will be what they will be. Hopefully I'll get into the low 11's.

MPH wise, I hope I'll get around the 125, and I'm aiming for about the 500rwkw mark with the engine. I don't know whether this is achievable with a turbo system running a safe tune and a nice safe boost level.....thats wayyyyyy off into the future anyway.....:(

I hope to slightly better that....and fancy gizmos included courtesy of the unfortunate Turbo R in my possession!! :D

The flying Spur was a low boost version of the Turbo R engine in a Silver Spur body. That car was partly the inspiration for the project, actually!!

Some more pics of little bits and pieces.

I know why these cars cost so much new.....there is a washer on every screw, the wires are beautifully taped up, and each of the switches is rebuildable, and you can still get all the parts. Amazing attention to detail, far better than anything I've seen before, including Jaguar.

Err.....Dunno!!:stupid:

I bought the car non-running, so I didn't get a chance to press it!!

Perhaps St Tuna can shed some light on this?

I wonder if you can get some 20's or something that will take the weight of such a car........

That and airbags would be pretty cool.....:demon:

Imagine the face of a "typical" roller owner who just saw a rolls royce dumped on airbags, on 20" chrome rims, a chev turbo V8 under the bonnet and an aussie rock-band guy behind the steering wheel. :lmao:

I dont think the fact that it'll still have a MAF will help him much

Finished stripping the rear of the car the other night and put the sell outside. I now have a huge pile of very good Bentley parts to sell!!

Started the engine last night....it started first turn of the key!! It was easier than I thought to find the fuel pump wires and connect the suction and return lines up. This thing runs smooth as!! Not even a tremor!! It was cool seeing the turbo compressor wheel spinning away happily too.....looks like Sonnys Avatar!!

Hey Bloo!! Good to hear from you mate, cracked a 12 yet? I haven't.

Not really much progress, aside from selling the motor and other bits at a healthy profit....basically quadrupling my money so far, so I'm happy!!

Haven't even thought about this project, sold my house and living in a renter, so no room for Rollers I'm afraid, keeping busy building RC cars while waiting for the planning permit to come through for the house and shed.

Hey there Sonny, finished that Hornet yet?

Yes, you are right. I have gone mafless. The power difference is amazing, I wish I did it from the start. You were correct all along mate. As a result I have left the forums in shame never to return.**
