View Full Version : Engine running on when ignition switched off.

Hey guys,

Firstly, I know this isn't a LS1, or even a Holden, but I know there is a wealth of experience here which may be able to shed some light on a problem for me.

I wanted to post this in the Technical section but the forums were all very specific for GMH stuff only - Mods feel free to move this if you feel it necessary.

I just got a 85 model Pajero (2.6l 4Cyl non-fuel injected) SWB wagon.

Almost everything works fine on it, except the speedo which always read VERY low (and has probably caused me to get my first speeding fine :flamin: ) and the engine.

The motor idles mostly fine (bit taxed when idling with ac on) but when I turn the car off it sometimes runs on a few revs.

IE, key goes to off position, engine almost stops and then it will splutter a little almost start up again and then stop.

Any ideas what might be causing this? Or ideas how to fix it?

Cheers

Might be carbon buildup on pistons and heads

Yeah, dad was thinking along those lines.

Possibly carbon buildup on the plugs. So when they get hot and the engine is switched off they keep igniting the fuel for a short while?

Yup carbon can cause hot spots in the combustion chamber and its also known as "dieseling" or "run on" and unburnt fuel is ignited by the hot spots and the engine continues to run knock and splutter and die uless you feed it more fuel (touching the throttle).

Also out of wack ignition timing can cause it as well.

Or maybe spark plugs that are too hot?

Or maybe an anti dieselling solenoid that has stopped working. Is it a carby engine or a fuel injected engine?

All of the above suggestions are good advice, but if you can't find a cure rather than let it cough and splutter and shudder to a halt, if it is a manual just pop it into 4th and stall it, I had the same sort of problem with some very highly modified and high compression 4 cylinder engines years ago.

Thanks for the ideas fellas.

I think when I'm around people ill just stall it as drewie says, save some embarrasment:rolleyes: . Ill pull the plugs and see if they're overly dirty, if so clean them and hope that fixes things up.
