Coupe 4 has 255 on the rear and uses a 9 inch rim ... that may suggest that it's a bit much for an 8 inch rim but I'm not 100% sure.

Nexon ... never heard of it, sorry.

I have run 255/35/18 on the YY SS rims for over 12 months and 30K of travel. They do not squirm on the rim at all, and have improved handling sufficiently that I dont hesitate to recommend them.

They fit perfectly and have been over the pits with no queries. So no it is not too wide but I would not going any wider on an 8" - if you want to go to 265 eventually, then you will need to look at a 9" IMO.

Sorry - never heard of those tyres before.

Nexen 3000 maybe? I had them on the car when I bought it. They were quite noisy and also not as good in the wet I thought, but then that was comparing to S03's. I have Nangkang NS2's now and they are a much better tyre than the Nexen's IMO, but not quite as good as the S03's. Good bang for buck with the Nangkangs as they are cheap, almost half the price of the S03s!

One of my mates has a set of Nexen tyres. He reckons they were really cheap and thats why he got them. They don't hang on to the road even in a stock AU XR6 and thats saying something.

My mate was running 265/35/18 yokie's on the arse end of the Monaro (standard 8" rims) he was happy with the performance of the tyre, but my reccomendation would be to go Max. 255 on the rear and Max. 245 on the front.

Keep in mind with mixed tyre sizes, its a pain when it comes to rotating every 5000 k's.

They'll be able to only rotate front with front and rear with rear, but this requires the tyre to be removed from the rim due to the tyre being directional.

P.S the 265's on the monaro were rubbing over the slightest bump!

If you speak to the tyre place, guaranteed they'll not reccomend you going over 245's due to sagging of the tyre on the 8" rim. Technically this should make the car handle alot worse!!!!!

.. and if it sits out as far from the rim as I'd have thought, would make installation difficult, meaning the rim is more likely to be damaged when they fit them.

Noooo. Listen to the tyre manufactures.

Minimum wheel width for a 255 tyre is 8.5".

I have Nexen 3000's on my VY. 235/40R/18...

VERY noisy, even asked holden if it was normal when I first got the car, but as my first car with wheels over 16" I just assumed it was the extra width. *shrug* Found to be pretty grippy in the dry, in the wet it drifts easily, but doubt that's any more than other tyres would.

Anyone know off the top of their head how much a set are? I'm trying to find places with cheap 235/245's and all looking at $220+ per tyre! :weirdo:

A little off track from the original thread but,

I have a pair of Sava Intensa's on the back of my ute because they were only $150 each for 17's. They are hard as a rock and have just about no grip. Good fun though.:headbang:

The best thing about them is they last for ages. Not sure what other sizes they come in though.

At the end of the day, the harder the compound of the tyre, the more mileage you'll get, the less grip and pretty shitty in the wet.

Softer compound, loads of grip, (wet depends on tread pattern), and low mileage! ohhhhh and generally more expensive!

The 'legality' of the tyre depends on the width & profile.
For a 255 tyre you must go to a 45 (or greater) profile for it to be legal (insurance wise anyway). Anything less than a 45 profile may be OK to drive on, but you can kiss any insurance claims goodby if you ever find yourself wanting to make a claim, i.e. voids any claims as you have exceeded the tyre manufacturers recommendations.
Hope this clarifies.

Thanks - I wondered that once upon a time so I do have the tyre and rim sizes specified on my policy in writing, so the insurance company are fully aware of what I am running - the onus is back to them.
Out of interest, do you have a link to the info regarding what size/profiles are allowed?

thanks

.......... unfortunately nothing I can put my hands on atm, but tyre manufacturers specify a rim width range (min & max) for each tyre size (width/profile) they produce. Then advice from various insurers I've spoken to on the issue have all invariably said you can put whatever size tyre you want on a rim but if you go outside of the manufacturers recommendations then any claims will be void.
Any tyre shop should be able to advise you or you could check out http://www.tirerack.com/tires/index.jsp.

Hi Guys

I have 800lb coils in the back with koni adjustables. I have also had the guards rolled. Has anyone tried 285/45 or 305/45 series tyres on the back of a VYII

Cheers

255's will be too wide for an 8" rim. When the tyre is too wide you can get a pinch effect if the tyres are underinflated. This will present sidewall bulges as a result of broken cords in the sidewall. Manfacturers spend millions on R & D to get things close to right and we think we know better.

It all depends on the profile a 255 with a say 50 profile will sit on a 7" rim a 255x40 tyre should have a 8.5 rim however if it were going on the rears only i would think that you could get away with an 8" rim.

Check here and play around with sizes

I tried to fit a 255 wide tyre on an 8inch rim and it didn't fit. The rims were 20inch in size though. I tried to fit 255/30 tyres.

This proves that a 255 tyre is too big for an 8inch rim, but can fit on the smaller wheels as the sidewall is big enough for you to stretch over.

You could probably fit a 255/35 tyre on a 19x8 inch rim that is inch wide though.

As i have heard of a few people fitting 265 wide tyres on 18x8 inch.

Also for your information 245 is the widest tyre you can legally fit on an 8inch wide rim if the sidewall is less than a 45 profile, so 255/40, 255/35 and 255/30 are all illegal on an 8inch wide rim. If the rims were 8.5inch wide though, they'd be fine.

When I bought the VY SS from a guy in NSW, it had 265's on the stock rear 18x8 wheels. This meant I could not get a RWC to register in VIC, as the legal limit is "up to 25mm greater than that fitted as original".

So for a 235 original, in VIC you can go to 260. But there are no 260 tres, so 255 is the legal limit.
