View Full Version : 20inch tyres and load ratings???

I have been doing some shopping for 20s and have come across an issue with getting the correct tyres for load rating on an SS ute. A few places have said on a 20in rim a 225/35/20 is the only tyre available with the correct load rating. This would look a bit skinny and silly I thought....was more after a 245/30 or 35/20.
So I'm curious what you guys with 20s have in the way of tyres, size, brand and if they are the correct load rating to keep everything legal and keep the insurance mob happy.
I'm not sure if the ute coming with 18s has a bearing on the load rating for tyres as opposed to it coming with 17s and what the tyre placquard says.
any help appreciated, thanks.

Gday M8
I took a quick look at the Holden website - doesnt list 18" wheels as an option for the ute. Of course the dealer may well sell anything he likes. Based on the figures stated for the SS sedan the 18" wheels (there are 4 different ones listed for the sedan) my guess is you will be already under on the load rating. The 18"s seem to be 91 (615kg) rated.
SS Ute wheel and tyre 17 x 8 is rated 93 (650kg) V (240Km/h).
Mass of SS ute M6 is 1625 + payload 650 = 2275KG
Max rear axle load is 1260kg divided by 2 wheels = 630kg (note axle load is not equal between F and R axles).
You need to look for a wheel + tyre that has min "92" (630kg) rating to make sure you comply 100%.
Check with the dealer if the 18"s are compliant first.
Got no idea what the 20" would be rated at, you need to check both the wheel rating (stamped on back of rim in kgs) + the tyre.
You need to make your own decision whether it is more important to stay 100% legal or look pretty.

225's are illegal unless they are wanli's they are the only load rated tyre for a commodore.
its even hard to get 235's in the correct load rating. 245"s you will need coil overs in the front or crewman front struts as they sit 16mm higher in the spring seat.
hope this helps

ok, thanks guys.
Yeah the 18s are factory fitted, option on SSZ and with the new 6.0L Thunder pack.
lowhsv: I plan to get coilovers, do you know of a 245 which complies??
BLK1T, thanks for that, so what you saying is if the tyre is rated at 92 or higher it will be ok????
I have 20s on my monaro with Wanli 225/35ZR20. The load rating is 93XL.
http://www.haroc.1337thing.com/ls1/YCV8/20s.jpg
I have a Wanli brochure here that I got when I had the wheels fitted. Lists all the Wanli S-1099 tyres (that is what I have) and they list the following 20s options:
225/35ZR20 93XL
235/35ZR20 93XL
245/35ZR20 95XL
255/35ZR20 97XL
oh and for those interested... 255/30ZR22 95XL.
When I did my wheels they only offered me the 225s or the 245s. The 245s would have fitted the rear but not the front (unless get coil overs). Also, 245s are guaranteed to rub on a Monaro with the offset my wheels are anyway, and Kazido (forum member) has 245s and he has some serious rub issues. I didn't want any rubbing and yes I was concerned about 225s being too skinny, damn I want 285s but when I put the 225 Wanlis directly against my Bridgestone 235s they were exactly the same contact width, no word of a lie. Trust me I checked cause it was a big concern of mine. When my tryes wear out I will be looking into the 235s for the rear to see how they go cause to date I haven't come close to rubbing.
I am happy with the Wanlis, the only dislike was that they were a bit 'hollywood noisy' ie squealled when pushed but that seems to be going away as they wear in. In the end you get what you pay for but having said that they are pretty good value given waht you get and what you have to pay. Plus they look quite good.
Hope that helps.

that does help, I have the CTW brochure that your rims came from and they have those Wanli listings on the back....just wasn't sure what my standard rating will be!
Like the rims and they suit your Monaro really well, they look really good on the silver ute on the catalogue too!
So your is all good with that setup as far as legal/insurance goes?
I'm just being paranoid maybe, but my last car was canaried and pulled off the road and I want this one to remain 100% legal(ish), plus gotta keep insurnace on my side just incase.
Thanks again
Legality depends from state to state and obviously determines insurance. My insurance company were mostly concerned with the width and stated that I can't go greater than 1 inch wider.
Re diameter. It varies but the biggest concern is the increase in rolling diameter of the wheel/tyre, not the wheel itself. That's one advantage of the 225/35 over the 245/35 or 235/35, it's diameter is far closer to the diameter of the factory wheels.
rim tyre profile tyre rim height
20 235 30 141mm 508mm 649mm
20 225 35 157.5 508 665.5
19 235 35 164.5 482.6 647.1
18 235 40 188 457.2 645.2
19 245 35 171.5 482.6 654.1
You have to check the state legislation. I believe Vic states the SERIES whereas other jurisdictions state the model in their interpretation so it will depend.

just be carefull about what the insurance company says. Even if they say that a certain tyre is ok, if it is illegal then they can refuse a claim.

And for that reason get them to write on your policy the tyre sizes in black and white.

Yes for load rating, but wait theres more. You still need to think about the tyre placard issues. I presume the SS ute comes with 17" wheel on the placard on the door. You know what PITA a canary is. In NSW my understanding is 1"wider / 1" larger wheel compared to the tyre placard is OK. Any more and the coppers can issue a defect. Having said that you would need to do something to attract their attention first, there are heaps of Rodeo/Hilux around ATM that are illegal in this regard, unless engineered.
I believe the max change in rolling diameter is 15mm (again NSW) as YCV8 was alluding to.

Yeah my last car was canaried and pulled off the road, thats why I am so concerned about getting this right! SS utes do come with 17s, but the 6.0L Thunder's are coming with 18x8 same as the SSZ, I'm pretty sure they would have to have this on the placquard. 1 inch wider is true and 15mm taller than the overall rolling diameter....so with the 225/35/20 it would be within that 15mm over the factory 235/40/18....and I believe a 17 is actually a bit taller again!
I have no idea how these people get around with 22s/24s on these new Rodeos etc.....what about insurance if they have a bad crash and its not covered because its illegal?

Mate,
I just put the new 20s on my ute. 245/35/20 Falken. Good tyre. They look good, grip good, and have the correct load rating. If in doubt, Id just go and see Keith 4 Wheels. He will look after you. Boys down there cut my guards too. No scrubbage as yet, its awesome.
Cheers

sounds good Rhys, I got a mate that manages a wheel shop and he will look after me with the 20s, I'm just trying to do my own research on what works so I can tell him and just get him to order them...rather than him doing everything.
What do you mean by 'cut the guards'
Should look good now, look forward to seeing it!
