stands for the diesel engine it wass originally designed for.. 6 = 6 cyl, 71 = cubic capacity (in inches) of each cylinder

V8R is on the money, these old blowers were indeed numbered after the 2 cycle Detroit Diesel engine they were fitted to, in the case of the 6/71 is was a V6 2 cycle diesel engine with 71 cubic inches per cylinder, the engine number in this case was a 6V71 Detroit Diesel ;)

These blowers were of the Roots design and only used as an air pump in the role they were designed for, pretty much junk for creating boost due to inefficiency and ability to heat the air badly

now, if youve ever heard an 8v92TTA, powering through the outback late at night, its one of the sweetest sounds ever to hit the ear.. along with a "pop-pop-pop-pop" boom of a V8 mack..

Arrrrrrr the old rootes blower. Bloody awesome piece of visual gear. I am currently building a 454 with a 8/71 on top going into a 57. Will need bigger retarder on dyno;) For years they powered just about all the super class boats in the Southern 80 with there huge intercoolers underneath. Great sounding old school gear. Cheers Chev

V8R is correct.

The original blowers that drag racers used before any of us were born came off industrial diesel engines. The most popular was the Detroit Diesel or GM which is a 2 stroke.
The diesel engine model denominations were No of cylinders followed by cubic inches per pot. IE 6-71 = 6 cyl X 71 cuin/pot
Think pots were 53,71,92,149 etc
Configs were 3,4,6,V6,V8,V12,V16 etc
In Australia we had these engines in trucks, trawlers, mining equipment, gen sets etc for many years until I guess the polution police phased them out of production.

Pictured below is a GM 12V71 diesel engine....the blower is tucked into the V and looks small here.

The current blowers you see fitted on drag cars etc use none of the original GM diesel components....but probably use the same model denominations based on the old rotor or housing length. Maybe its the swept volume which has carried over ????
