Mass Holden recall
PM - Wednesday, 12 May , 2004 18:37:28
Reporter: David Hardaker
MARK COLVIN: This evening, Holden has issued one of Australia's biggest ever car recall notices. It involves 135,000 cars, including some of Holden's most popular makes.
The recall covers all Commodores, Calais, one tonners and utes built between August 2002 and September 2003. Statesman and Caprice models built between March and September 2003 will also be recalled.
The company has identified the problem as a faulty power-steering hose which could rupture while cornering. Holden concedes the fault could lead to a loss of control, but it's playing down any danger.
David Hardaker asked Holden Spokesman, Jason Laird, when the company first became aware of the problem.
JASON LAIRD: We initially had reports of hoses being ruptured in late 2002 in a very small number. Those initial cases were reported under fairly extreme driving conditions. As we investigated that further we found that there was potential for this to occur under less severe conditions. We then investigated it further, sourced an alternative supply and were able to obviously activate this recall now.
DAVID HARDAKER: Late 2002. Well some time's passed since then. Why didn't you recall these cars earlier?
JASON LAIRD: Ah well, because it was a case of being able to identify what the cause was and as I said the first few cases that came through, and there've only been 17 warranty claims on these 135,000 cars, were under fairly extreme conditions. They were automotive media drive tests, and things where cars were being treated at the fairly, at the top end of the scale of what a car was expected to do. So the core understanding of a recall is being able to identify firstly what the root cause is, and secondly being able to identify how that can be either replaced or repaired or somehow fixed.
DAVID HARDAKER: Now are you aware of any accidents that might be due to this fault?
JASON LAIRD: We're not aware of any accidents.
DAVID HARDAKER: Have you asked? Have you sought investigation on that?
JASON LAIRD: Absolutely. This issue has been investigated thoroughly. It should be noted that what would occur if a hose ruptures and the cooling fluid runs out, that eventually the driver will not have power steering available to them. That doesn't mean they don't have control of the vehicle. What it means is that the power steering that everyone's come to know and love as part of everyday life is not available to them, and obviously the steering would become much heavier.
DAVID HARDAKER: How long has Holden itself been deciding whether or not to conduct this recall?
JASON LAIRD: In terms of the... it's not an issue of whether we were or weren't deciding to conduct it. The issue was any time anything irregular occurs with a vehicle, it needs to be investigated as to whether it might be a one off or it's been caused by some external circumstances or whether there is in fact something wrong with a part, and if so, what part?
