As most of you Know I lost my daughter just a few short weeks ago now and I have been throwing myself into the rebuild of my VT wagon for some therapy... My business colours are Yellow and Black but I have painted this care Devil mainly because it was her most favourite colour....
I have completed this in the last 4 months... I have had some time off for obvious reasons equating to a 2 month build time.... I have completed ALL the work myself except the painting (I didn't want to get that dirty and really dont have the patience for the prep work) and done this in and around my day job in Info Tech.
HSV dont make a CS Wagon so as I needed one for work I had to make 1...
The vehicle was a VT executive wagon V6 Auto. Everything and I mean Everything has been replaced except the body doors and some of the glass. It is now a Supercharged 5.7 VZ Clubsport Replica down to the almost the last detail (Still looking for VZ R8 Clubsport Seats ..$4000 from holden is a bit steep...)
What has It had done....
Genuine HSV VZ CS Front Clip.....(guards Bonnet Bar Fascia Vent inserts Headlights ETC)
Totally Sounddeadened with 40l of Sound deadener....
Conversion to VY Running Gear incl complete Harness... (Not for the feint hearted)
HSV Performance Brakes, Suspension and Anti Rollbars. Toe links added to rear suspension. Put the wheels off my VZ R8 on to complete the illusion. ( Motorama holden guys all came out for a peek and were not real sure what was going on)
All the interior converted to VZ Clubsport including Hoodlining updated to black (Cant even buy it as none of the wagons ever had black hood lining etc. so we had to make it all..)
I could go on forever but twas all fun....
Items still to be done...
*Motor has to be finished (Temp 5.7 from 1 of my limos is currelty installed while some work is done to that car...)
*Mark from PT to wave his magic wand and make it go like it should (13.1 Supercharged is a joke even with 1.8 60" )
*VZ R8 Seats installed (when I can find some) and the rear seat re trimmed.
*Install HID headlights
*Install Harrop Diff Cover
*Install VZ CS Sedan Number plate surround fascia (MMM Plasma Cutter on fresh paint.... not looking forward to that....)
*Matt black the skirt strips like the MY06 Clubsport R8
Have included a few pics of the build......I have heaps more and I not done yet....

It is the parts you have that you dont have to buy individually....... there is so mouch that is different... I would not recomend this to anyone.... Def cheaper to go and buy the later model.....
I did it because I wanted a Gen III and wagon gen III's are rarer that R.H.S....
To make a vy wagon SS into a CS would have been far more expensive....
I bought a VY SS Sedan from the Damaged Vehicle Auctions and changed the harness..... Dont ask how long it took to get the sedan harness and the wagon harness to mate up......

I'm going to create a tribute web site 4 katie with some of the pics of her and some of the wagon photos....
I'll do this over the next few weeks and get it up and running.....
I want to take some pictures of the car in some of her favoutie settings etc...
I am going to put some understated business related grafix on the lower doors and put a digital printer picture of Katie and Maddie on the hatch window....
I have been offered the numberplates "4 KATIE" but I want Maddie to feel included in this as well... she is still here after all..... So I will put my "RESQ IT" plates on it and do the tribute thing with graffix..... I want it understated but also every1 to know why I finished this car.....and what drove me to go the extra mile in each and every area of this build.
When katie was diagnosed in December last year I totally gave up of this project and was going to sell it....Strange how stuff that was important isn't ne more after news like that. Katie wanted me to finish it... and begged me to take her to school in it when it was completed. So I continued along the road even a little while she was sick just so that if she survived this it would be done... She used to sit with me and watch and I like to think learn....She asked so many questions and even handed me screwdrivers .. she know philips from flathead..... 1 in each hand....
Thanyou all for you support and messages over the last few weeks.......
I feel a little bit better tonight after sharing this with all of you.....
I would like to thank some of those who have helped with this build by way of parts, advice, labour etc...
Katie 4 the inspiration
Mum and Maddie for helping when I wanted to give Up.....
Justin Hughes and Shane Cleary for all the help and hinderance... I still cant find that l/h door quarter glass Shane.
John & Greg - All Tranmissions
MArk & Shaun - Power Torque
Brad Frew - Performance Wholesale
Nick - City Suspension Centre
Mot - Aussie Diffs
Keith Ian & Kiwi - Keith 4 Wheels
Steve - Miller St Smash Repairs
Joyce - Motorama Sapre Parts.....Im her serial pest.......
Anyone else who I forgot ......
Chad.

Firstly I would like to give my belated condolances to you and your family for this heartbreaking loss. I also have kids and couldnt possibly imagine life without them. My little boy is 18 months and never leaves my side no matter what I'm doing, he has to copy me exactly and he somtimes just sits and watches. Reading this thread just makes me take a step back and think about what I have got and that life is too short to take for granted. Cherish what time you can with your loved ones because there's no rewind button on life.
Secondly being a wagon lover through & through you have absolutly done it, that is the ducks guts. You have inspired me to continue my plans to make somthing special to me but at the same time I envy you for making it look so easy in such little time.
All the best to you and your family - Katie will always be by your side too.

Well done Chad ... the results speak for themselves. Most HSV builds that I have seen look crap, yours like it came from the factory, it's exceptional.
As has already been said, Katie would be so proud. You have finished (almost) her dream and she will be right there with you every time you start her up.
My wife has asked if I know how your going, I will have to show her this now. It's amazing, we have never met but we think of you regularly, I hope things are getting easier for you and your family. All the best mate.

Mate theres really no need to say anything, the car speaks for itself and the build quality shows just how much you wanted this car to be perfect.... The fact that you have done it all yourself, well I can only imagine the feelings you would have being able to sit there and appreciate the car and realizing that there is a little bit of your daughters influence gone into every part of the build.....
I would think that there would be someone on here that would no the right person to talk to in order to get you those seats donated by HSV...... If they can see what you have produced and the effort that has been put into it then I am sure they would be more than willing to contribute in some small way.....

Hi to everyone. My name is Charles Johanson or as Katie used to call me Uncle Chucky.
I have never posted on Ls1 before and have been moved to do so only by the overwelming support that has been shown to my brother Chad and his family in this, the hardest time of their lifes.
I hope everone who has sent their best wishes to Chad,Vernita & Maddie realise how much I know it means to them.
I know first hand how so many of you feel when you read the story of my beautiful little niece. SO unfair... So Unbelievable...So Courageous.(for all involved).
I know that the hardest thing for me is wishing i could do something for them and there being nothing i can do.
After reading all your fantastic coments i have come to a realisation that maybe i am not alone in feeling helpless to help in this situation so i have a solution.
Lets get Chad the CS seats....
If for your own sake you would like to help Chad get the seats he requires to make Katies wagon "just perfect" please contact me via Email kkaos@bigpond.net.au I will match dollar for dollar any contrabutions made. If we cant pay for them lets at least make it a little more affordable for him.
Thank you all once again for your fantastic support of some people that are very special to me.

all you need now is "4KATIE" plates ... love the wagon.
Chad was offered them, but he has another beautiful little girl called Maddie.
How hard it must be to be strong for Maddie, Maddie needs to know shes number 1 too.
So as mentioned earlier by Chad, the car is a tribute to both girls.

Chad as i said to you the other night at willowbank she would be proud of her daddy, Katie would be sitting in the drivers seat asking for the keys saying i am not old enough to drive yet but can i please have the keys Dad.
Guys you got to see this thing in the flesh, Chad had it out at willowbank for a run pre tune with the supercharger, even the willowbank staff who see every thing all stopped in there tracks and watched chad waste the back tyres and then launch the wagon.

VT was the last HSV based wagon to roll out of Claytons finest.
Senator Signature Estate. Thats what they called it.
Im not entirely sure but I think a few were made with an LS1, but most were the Holden 304.
Actually I just checked the HSV site and it says the Holden 5.7 was the top motor of choice.
Redbook However says a series 2 VT Estate was released in June 99 at the same time as the SV99, and of course both had the LS1.

MArk & Shaun - Power Torque
Brad Frew - Performance Wholesale
Nick - City Suspension Centre

I have been busy with work and have not been working on the car much....
The leather seats are all done .....Details ...http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=55097
I have put screens in the back of the Coulsons with a dvd player(in the rear) in the rears for Maddie (and the new arrival due sometime in the next 9 mths...)....
Im in the process of dong the stereo and the Car PC with an 8.5 inch touch screen mounterd where the R8 gauges go....incl Satnav, Vehicle dynamics ala SV6000, Bluetooth phone dvd,mp3 etc player.. this system will have 3 sources and all will be able to be displayed independantly on each screen 1 in the front and the two in the rears....
I intend to mount the amps in the rear cargo windows and put a sub or two in the floor for a stealth install..The amps will be blacked out and small cold cathode lights will turn on when I want to display them....
I have gone dynamat crazy and deadened the whole thing... not good for QM times but it was never really about that neway.. real quiet now...just chasing a few pesky rattles that only I can hear.....I get alot of comments on how quiet the car is and how it sounds loud outside but quiet as inside...
The car has been signwritten....and my "RESQIT" plates are now on the car.....Some of the details are on the thread at the top of this page....
I had the guards rolled and it damaged a quarter pannel so that had to be repaired and the rolling flared the guards quite dramatically so the 19's seemed like they were 2" to skinny so a set of 20" rims were ordered and fitted... they are pretty different but I like them.... I haven't got any pictures of the new wheels but I'm gonna take some tomorrw if the weather is ok as the car has been fully detailed (took 2 days).
The new engine has been assembled this weekend and was pulled apart (again) to have the crank balanced with the rods....The heads will be CNC ported this week and hopefully all will be completely assembled by next weekend and all going to plan will be installed on monday...
Then it is off to PT for a Mark Special and hopefully some nasty numbers... Also the boost upgrade kit for the PWR supercharger will be fitted along with the new motor...
I have to make some minor mods to the rear bar for the bigger wheels and fit the mesh and the towbar to the rear and just much with the rear bar to get the fit as I wanted it but the rest is pretty much sorted....
Who would have thought that after the car was driveable so quickly that it would take this long to get the details sorted and ironed out....
For those who are interested Myself and the family are all doing well and coping with the loss of Katie aswell as can be expected. We don't wake up everyday and it is in the forefront of our minds as it has been for the last few months....I can now testify that while it seems like it gets worse and worse eventually after time you can see progress and the pains stops getting worse and starts to abate and it gets a litte easier each day. It was here birthday in the 5th of July and it was no where near as hard as I was expecting it to be.....Difficult but now the impossibility I felt it would be....Maddies is doing great she is still a little weepy with all things but she has started to come out of her shell again and dealing with loss of her sister with incredible strength and maturity well beyond her years.
When Katie died things that used to be fun just didn't feel the same ne more.... Slowly things are getting back to normal... Even slower I'm able to find enjoyment in the things that stopped being fun....That to me is a sign that we are slowly on the mend....the hardest stuff is when you doo something that you used to do regularly with Katie... or do go somewhere for the first time...We got ice-cream at the last place Katie had ot and it was nearly all I could bear to remain composed....
My wife and I have decided to have another child more for the sake of Maddie and so we I will hopefully have some news in the next few week on that front... There will be approx 8 years between the kids so we decided it was now or never so I am quite happy with my responsibility in this procedure....:) :) :) :)
Again let me say thanx to all those who have showed support and have sent thier best wishes throught replies to threads and pm's and the like and those who have gone out of their way to show their support for us and the wagon build...
I will publish a list of all those who have aided in the wagon build both those paid and those not... I will also be setting up a website linked to my work website site about the wagon and the details of the build....And some tribute stuff for Katie.
Cheers
Cobalt

Update..........
A few pics.... and some disapointment.....
I got word from my engine builder that the block we were going to use is damaged beyond repair in one of the main tunnels and is cracked....
He believes that the machine shop is responsible and the clearences on this tunnel are more than 30 times outside the correct spec.... Result is block in the bin ....... I have a spare block so that is not a huge problem and I got the orig 1 with the crack for free so it is not a real loss just a delay...
The machine shop has sort of taken responsibility for it and they will machine the next block free of charge......But we all know how free work takes ages as it is the last cab off the rank......
any hoo...... I have got some wheel and haven't posted some pics....
They are different.... But that is what I like.... They fill the guards in all dimensions better..... They make the track wider and just fill everything really well..... They are not everyone's taste but that is OK too....
I hated how the clubby wheels looked like they needed to be sapced out an inch to sit flush with the outside of the car....
Here are the pics..... well 1 at least.....

Looking great as always mate. I like the wheels even though I wouldn't have chosen them personally.
The machine shop has sort of taken responsibility for it and they will machine the next block free of charge......But we all know how free work takes ages as it is the last cab off the rank......
If they messed up the first one, and didn't tell you (your engine builder had to find it out himself) then would you give them a shot at another one, even if it was free? I know I wouldn't.

They maintain that it was not a machining problem but that the fault existed prior to them machining it... The tunnel was cracked high up in the block and the bolck did come out of an engine that has seized... However... I asked that they check this block and determine if it could be reused.... They said yes..... I believe that they missed this "crack" rather than causing the problem... They are an extremely reputable workshop that comes highly recomended.
The block they have now is a LS6 out of a VY rather than the old LS1 style which is better for me. They are also a much stronger block and dont have the weakness where the the origional block has cracked....
If they stuff this 1 I will have them pay for an LS2......

Good work, I am sure Nickh will look after you.
It might be worth getting one of these skilled photo chopping people to put up how it would look with red or black calipers.
At a guess, the red might actually be better as it will be in contrast to the rims. The black may dissapear...

The brakes need to be subtle....
You want someone to look at the car and then go or... you even did the brakes.....
With a yellow car you don't need brakes to stand out.....
The yellow calipers look shit and I dont like yellow and red....
Maybe Silver to match the wheels.... with Black lettering.... Can't see myself with red and yellow...

Breathtaking. Absolutely awesome, personally i would've kept the HSV wheels and theme, i'd also colour code the roof trims (we did tis on my brothers and it looks the goods.) and paint the accent in the side skirt black, (just noticed the last image, my bad) but thats my opinion and its your cars.

Engine is in.
I was at PT on tuesday when we fired the motor and had some cam clearence issues with the standard rocker covers. Fixed with the fittment of some VX covers I had lying around. 5 hours later we fired the motor again.
On the dyno she went..... After less tha 5 min and not even tying it down disaster nearly struck.
An injector o-ring blew spraying fuel all over the engine, right header and the floor. Mark's quick thinking avoided a disaster. He had the fire ext in hand before I knew what was going on. Lucky the motor was not hot and I have coated headers so disaster was avoided.
It appears I pinched an o-ring when the injector were installed. I hate PWR fuel rails. But disaster was avoided thanx to Mark's qucik thinking and action.
Anyhoo...... After that drama and a new o-ring we were off.
The engine is new so there was no leaning on it. I has forged pistons so it needs a thousand kays on it before we can really tune it.
400RWHP @ 5000 and climbing steeply.
Marks words were it will go 480 easy. So heres hoping he is wrong and it maked 500.
500FWKW was always the goal from this project.
We will see....
Have been putting some K's on it and yesterday had the stallie installed. I wasn't gping to do this but Mark suggested it would be the right option. I had it lying around so in it went.
All Transmission at Currumbin did the install and they were unusually quiet so I asked they drop the pan and check the gearbox as it was of unknown origin.
It had been slipping but I thought it was the converter. Turns out the trans was pretty trashed. 150K in a car I got as a wreck and then a year in my car with a blower had not been kind.
SO..... Full rebuild.
Upgraded pump, Upgraded reaction shell, New Trick Bands, Larger Sprag, Beefed up clutches and a few other trick mods. This is now the crispest shifting transmission without being harsh I have ever driven. I have had "Shift Kits' and they were real harsh. This is just crisp and beautiful.
There are some tune issue to be ironed out but this is to be expected.
I'm quickly realising that you really don't need this much power but GOD is it fun.....
Also a big thumbs up to MR Muffler at sumner Park in Brisbane.
Install a super quiet (Well it shuts up the monster motor so I can talk on the phone) 3" dual exhaust with 23 super resonators and 2 mufflers and a rear barrell resonator. Sounds AWESOME.
It is all engine and supercharger noise not BS loud exhaust. Love the deep throaty sound and the lumpy cam idle.
I cannot believe how much fun this cars is and how much the power and torque just piles on.... AND THIS IS A SUPER SOFT TUNE FOR RUN IN.....
OMFG when this thing is leaned on.....
Cheers
Chad

I like the contrast of the black roof bars.....
I like the CS wheels but the dont fill the guards like these. Also you can't see from the side how the wider track makes the Car look better. I don't have any before pics unfortunately.
Again each to their own but I I had a real CS and changed the wheels no one would care......

I have Koni Sport inserts in HSV struts with VX HSV Clubsport springs. There is minimal rubbing mostly in front of the tyre. I have had the front guards rolled slightly.
Ther are a couple of rub marks on the struts but nothing to be concerned about. There is about 1mm o clearence between the strut spring seat and the wheel there is also about a mil between the strut upright and the tyre. Not much but enough....
Look to soften up the ride to mode like my Clubsport. The grandma is setting in.

You are running 8" or 8.5" arnt you. See I have read a lot of posts here about having to change front struts because of the clearance issues. But it just isnt true. (suppose id depends on offsets tho) I am running 20x9" with 245/35/20 on standard vy struts and its sweet. Infact it sounds like I have a bit more clearance than you from the strut (not much tho i will admit) But the wheels still inside the gaurd just too. I need to roll my fronts a bit tho I think also.

Mine are 8.5. I have the camber rolled in a little for handling. It is all about offset. If you have standard non hsv struts then 20's will not clear. I had the suspension shop specifically use HSV struts so I would have no clearence issues down the track.

Chad, you get much unwanted police attention from those incredibly purple headlights?
Cobalt
04-05-2007, 09:21 AM
No so far. I sat at those very lights opposite a cop last night and nothing.
I ordered those from the states as White but they shipped the wrong ones. It was an EBAY deal and to much hassle to sort out. I only just put them back in after having all the mods legalised and the engine swap certified by transport. I can order some new HID bulbs if I get nailed and will cop the fine sweet.
With so many euro cars coming with all sorts of headlights I think the cops ignore them. I have so far not had any unwanted attention from the boys in blue. Touching Large quantities of Timber at this point. MMMM Coppers can't read right.....

I had put the Advanti Havoc's on the Mrs Clubsport as I wanted something different for the Wags seeing that like 2 cars in the last three months have had them on and both bee yellow in colour.
I hate looking like a copycat so I went looking.....
And found these.

Was told they wouldn't fit so went or well.....
Tried 5 different wheels and went yuk every time. they either looked to small or wouldn't fit over the harrops.
Then
Saw a VY Ute drive up the road with SWT Tyres and some chrome flash.
Followed him and he stopped (at his shop) in Moss St.
What do you know but I have found my wheels.... I had to have them and they fitted.
Here they are 22x8.5 on the front and 22.9.5 on the rear.
Pics are at night which sux but will post more tomorrow just hankering to show them off...

The wheels have been shaved to get a 50 offset on a 9.5 and the fronts are stock. Coilovers.
I had had the guards rolled alot for the 20" Avanti Havocs as they were 45 offset. They literally bolted straight on. I have clearanced around the back of the bumper but will have to do some more as they are rubbing a bit but not enough to be a concern. I have to move the front left caster back a bit. Not great for wheel alignment but the price you pay for 22's
The front had also been rolled. They do scrub a bit or hard slow turns but I really don't care cause they look SOOOOOOOOOOO Good.
