Hi Guys

Just doing a bit of a survey on problem cars.

My car is 3.75 yrs old and has 78 000km.

I have been told some issues being experienced with the car are "wear and tear".

To prove or disprove this theory, I am keen to hear about issues you may have experienced.

In your fed back, Please be sure to include:
make:
mode:
problem:
Problem @ KM's/age:

I will analyze results and post findings here in a few weeks.

For a good data set am hoping for 50 + replies

Thanks for your input.

Problem @ KM's/age: 70,000km 2.5 yrs

Coincidence??? they say that it happened a week after I got them to change the fluid and the reservoir contained coarse gritty muck after master cyl dumped it's lunch on the carpet under the pedal cluster.

Gees that's a shocking amount of problems JHP1. I would be well pissed with that aswell. Unbelievable considering I have the series 1 which almost always has more problems than series 2 and its only a SV8 too and has 85,000k's on it. My only problem so far was a passenger door transponder, front tie rod and hand brake shoes. Although I've only had it for a year I checked the warranty history on it from new and there were only 3 or 4 other minor issues.

And Brenden I have heard horror stories like these from many a Frawd/Skyline owner. But I agree I reckon I would have tried to sell it by now.

In the end, its pretty obvious that the majority of commodores will have problems (major or minor), i just didnt kno of the number of problems when i first got the car (used), or else i might've gotten somethin else. Just check this link out:

Indeed although I am glad that they don't sweep the recalls under the carpet and as any car owner I like the faults to be known and reconized and dealt with quickly.

I hope the VE will have less faults but I would like to be notified if there is a fault that can be dealt with.

Hey there. I got the same car and had the same problem. When I 1st bought it and they replaced the shifter twice and each time made a different rattle, and they told me the same story, that it wasnt very noisey and was normal for VX models, and I said BS it was. But since Im a persistant prick (in the nicest way lol). I looked into it.
What I found out they were doing was ordering the standard shifter and boot kit, (not the proper HSV short shifter). So I basically had to throw it in their face and demand them to order a HSV short shifter , (which incidently took 3-4 weeks to come, while the other were same day or next day jobs :P).
But when it was put in, no noise at all, suprise suprise. The dealer manager didnt even bother to say sorry after all that Bullsh%& I went through.
I know it was only a trivial little thing, but it was annoying and everyone commented how loud the rattle was, and I had just bought it, so i wanted it right :yup:

Hey just noticed you were from SA too maybe it was the same dealer :P

13-07-2006, 09:12 PM
make: Holden
model: 2002 Series 2 VX SS A4
problem's:
1) Glove box is broken on the right side
2) the middle flap thing broken underneath the radio
3) fan control lights are dead and heater control lights are really dim
4) Leaking water at the moment (going to a mechanic to see what the problem is), Water sensor is playing up here and there saying I need water when I dont, then it doesn't work at all when I do need water, though sometimes it is correct (My guesses are it is caused by the leaking water problem or I stuffed it somehow when I installed the mcai and mail order pcm).
5)The thing that closes/locks your boot together is missing one screw so making it really hard to close it properly).
6) The left side of the drivers seat is worn out (it was like that when I bought it, it is a x police car so I am guessing it was from whatever they had around their belt)
7) Power steering fluid needs topping up every 2 months (doesn't bother me at all)
8) Diff is starting to make a light whine noise and sometimes clunks when suddenly stopping (I have not changed the diff oil and it most likely never has been done, so hopefully it's just dirty oil)
9) Passenger side electric window button stuffing up, you have to push the button down real hard and at a angle to get the thing down and its a mission as it goes and stop's to get it down. My driver side electric window button stopped working for 3 days then suddenly worked again ;) . The back right passenger electric window button on there door is stuff, it will only allow you to let the window down and not up
10) The back right passenger door is making a real loud squeaking noise and it's really hard to shut (its needs some WD40 or some grease)
Problem @ KM's/age: 100,000k+/4yr (Though I only bought the car 10 Months ago at 75,000ks)

Cheers,

1. Clutch replaced under warranty 20,000kms
2. Uses 1litre of oil every 5000kms (been on oil watch at 2 dealers and it is "within acceptable tolerance limits"
3. Brake squeal since new.
4. Clunk in steering rack when going from opp lock to opp lock. Rack replaced twice. Problem still there. Holden say I must have hit a gutter or pot hole?
5. Exhaust rattle at 2000km. Fixed. No worries.

Overall very happy with the car. I would still have bought it if I new these problems were going to happen. I really don't know what all the whinging is about. Its a Holden, not a BMW.

problem:
1st time: *pre delivery* 49,500klm - Clutch/gearbox problem asked to get checked (not checked), asked for 50,000 service (not done) slight bumper damage & missing bracket (not fixed).

2nd time: 51,000klm - Clutch/gearbox problem asked to get checked (not checked), asked for 50,000 service (not done) slight bumper damage, missing bracket (not fixed). Apparently there was a workshop accident so I'll give them a break.

3rd time: 53,000klm - dying synchro 2nd gear (gearbox rebuilt), brake shudder (discs machined), noisy power steering (lubed), rocking drivers seat (new seat base ordered, put in wrong car, had to order new part), rear parcel shelf bad rattle (fixed) 50,000k service (not done), loud passenger door creaking (door adjusted), Fixed bumper, replaced bracket.

4th time: 53,500klm - Drivers seat rocking (replaced seat base), bad exhaust vibration under load (not mounted correctly after removing gearbox), 50,000k service (finally done), holden assist vehicle tracking not working (ordered new aerial).

5th time: 54,500klm - reverse gear can be selected while driving since gearbox rebuild, noisy water pump/idler pully, slight "odd" engine noise, drivers seat up/down control not working since base was replaced, sat-nav cutting in/out, power steering noise back, passenger door creaking louder than ever...

...Finally cracked the sh!ts and phoned the general manager...

...The car was in the workshop for 3 weeks and had the following done

Replaced holden assist aerial, battery backup and telematics module, replaced reverse gear solenoid, replaced water pump, replaced idler pulley, got HSV tech to REBUILD ENGINE with modified GM pistons/rings (due to gudgeon noise), sent sat-nav to VDO for repair, added "special oil" to power steering (?huh? oh well, it worked so I'm not complaining), replaced front/rear brake pads checked and freed-up caliper assemblies, replaced front sway bar bushes (link.drop-kit).

56,500klm - Passenger door still creaks and parcel shelf is starting to rattle again, fan on low-speed is making a ticking noise and I have started to notice a whining noise from the front wheels at 50klm/hr (I think it is the cheap crappy "silverstone" tyres the dealership put on the front end). Just finished running the engine in.

Out of the 3 months of owning the car, I have had it in my possesion for half that time.

Was it worth it?

Absofuc&inglutely, I love the car! It drives like a new one, feels stronger sounds great and handles much better than when I bought it. Was difficult going through all the stress and the $1200 in lost wages driving it back and forwards to the service centre, but I would probably do it all again. Plus the guys at the dealership are now very supportive after the bad run I've had.

Model: VU SS (bought with 87000kms)
Problems: When turn heater on stays cold and demists @ 90000, rear bumper inserts keep falling out (consistant), drivers seat sagging to centre of car, coolant smell (pressure checked radiator/evaporator and all hoses ok), general clunking and banging from driveline, seat fabric gets folds and stretches generally looks crap. Otherwise I love my ute.

model:2002 CV8 Monaro M6, bought 3 months ago with 49,500klms on clock

UPDATE

Drove the munro through a really heavy storm, ended up with around 10 litres of water in the passenger-side rear footwell. Airbag warning light came on around the same time so now the car sings a little tune every time it's started. Had battery problems as well, took to auto-elec who said that the car is pulling too much current when switched off.

So it's off to the service department again, I am assuming this is going to be under the 3-year extended warranty, if not I will be p1ssed-off.

Oh well at least I've gone a month or so without any problems. :(

Just over 200,000

Broken flap under radio never fixed
Leaking Water into boot under spoiler went to Clark rubber and made my own seals from foam as it was not repaired three times by dealer.

VL Commodore

Needs better aftermarket stereo as everything in the interior rattles.
Roof paint is now fading, but car out of warranty.
Not a single problem since new

Dec 2005 CV8Z Monaro
20,000
Rear handbrake shoes have made grinding noise since new. Been to dealer twice but gave up after they left the brake bleed valve open and I lost rear brakes on the way home. Shifter has also been replaced twice but still rattles, very pissed off that I also have a cable tie sticking out of a 1cm hole in side of the leather skirt since repair. Constant rattles from passenger seat and rear shelf. Oil light comes on when starting still not fixed during visits to dealer. Gear shifter is now almost rock solid when the car is cold due to compound put on 2nd replacement shifter. GF now keeps missing gears when she takes the Zed for a spin.

Will not take it back to dealer until they employ someone over the age of 18 that can read.

Model: VU II SS M6
Problem: Loud buzz through gear shift, clutch sliping, brakes shuddering.
Problem @ 85k 3.2 years old when i bought it. I had these things looked at before i took delivery. Brakes were done no questions and no further problems. Holden rejected the clutch as it was normal wear and tear. As for the buzz in the shifter, the service department said common prob there is a kit for it, holden said to bad out of warranty $1200 to get rid of buzz:flipoff: Service tech stuck some wheel weights to the shift lever under the boot and made it a bit better.
