Hey guys just wanting to know what people think and know of the standard factory alarm/imobiliser system for the vz cv8's and cv8z's?? is it an australian standards imob...1 point or 2 point? and i read somewhere that it has an alarm i.e. horn? is that right and how sensitive is it?
reason i ask... is it worth upgrading the imobiliser to a 3 point, or getting a better alarm etc???
any advice would be great

Send a PM to FST57L (Carl), he is heavily involved in Alarm Systems for cars and should be able to tell you anything and everything you want to know.
DO NOT TRUST ANY HOLDEN SECURITY! Trust me on this one!

im also interested in knowing how good the stock alarm/immoboliser system is, and if i should upgrade to an aftermarket alarm system
has anyone else here upgraded there alarm? if so, was it easy to do ? ive heard good things about mongoose and black widow...
i tried searching for "FST57L" but i got an error message. is there any other way of contacting this member ? thanks

I believe its CarlFST60L your after, personally i wouldnt have too much faith in the generals alarm system especially if your spending quite a lot upgrading and modifying the vehicle.

ok thanks mate.
another thing im worried about is, how easy is it for someone to install the alarm?
i know the vz calais is packed full of electric features, and if someone who wasnt familiar with the car went ahead and took the interior apart, when putting it back togethor, plugged the wires in wrong, everything would be a mess...
also if someone could recomend an alarm installer in melbourne who is familar with the vz series i would appreciate it
thanks.

pretty sure standard is only 1 point immobiliser. dealer rp1 alarm upgrade only adds ultrasonics and extra sensors for alarm, then you can pay for extra points of immobilisation.

Any upgrades will improve your protection, but get ready for middle of the night false alarms...
I've seen HEAPS of aftermarket upgrades for these regularly false, to the point some people get them disconnected!

I have found the factory fitted units very reliable. I do recomend the fitment of a secondary immobilizer independant of the vehicles remote though. A simple one is the old fuel solenoid valve or pump shut off operated by a simple relay & indiscreet switch only that will activate once the keys in the ignition in the on position.

no holden factory systems meet australian standards as they do not re-arm themselves. i.e. if you disarm the system by mistake it will stay off until you (or someone else) discovers the mistake. the australian standards require that the system re-arms itself after 30 seconds.

The immobilisers do re-arm themselves, just not the alarm/central locking.

Okay, I could be wrong but...
1 push on the button locks the car.. then push and hold the buttom (till the lights stay on for about 3 secs)-immobiliser and dead-lock kick in.
Only my experience, but call an RAA van and see if he can get into your car (VZ CV8) without smashing the window. Cant comment on the power of the second push of the button cause the wife had to come with the spare key !

Was bypassed in a matter of seconds, by ripping out a bunch of wires.
...sorry meant the alarm system...

You can get one of those illegal systems that releases a burst of flames from the underside of the car if there appears to be a forced entry =P That'll teach em!
Personally, if I was to be purchasing a car (company cars, don't even own my own) I'd be looking at something like Holden Assist where the engine can be shut down if I report the car stolen and GPS locates the car for me.
Here's some info:
Holden Assist Ultra Telematics
Optional on the new Caprice, telematics enables vehicles to send and receive data - and have their position pinpointed at any time - via integrated GSM mobile phone network and global positioning satellite technology. Owners of telematics-equipped vehicles can take advantage of Holden Assist, a subscription-based interactive security system that provides on-board assistance 24/7.
If stolen, Holden Assist can locate and track your vehicle, and working with police, safely immobilise the engine via remote technology.
If an airbag is deployed, the system notifies an operator who will attempt to speak with the driver. If there is no response, emergency services are notified.
If keys are locked in the vehicle, an operator can validate the owner's identity, then unlock the doors remotely.
In an emergency, the driver can press the SOS button to speak with an operator, who will locate the vehicle and send emergency services if required.
If roadside assistance is required, on the press of a button the vehicle is located and assistance despatched.
If the vehicle battery is low, the system notifies an operator who will attempt to speak with the driver.

I may be wrong but my understanding is that the US immobiliser system on the Commodore has never been defeated because it is intrinsic to the programming of the computer. Hence, ones which are stolen are either towed or stolen with the key. Most common I understand is having the keys taken from the house the theif broke into in the first place, adding insult to injury when they use your car to take away your gear. The alarm system on the other hand is pretty basic but then it doesn't false. I suppose it depends on whether you have stuff in their you really want to protect, like a really expensive stereo. The reality is most people just want to flog an after market stereo or something on seat they can sell quickly for drugs.

How about a quicktrack tracking system? Also, you should be able to contact your insurance company and ask them if they recommend any for your model car. It is in their best interests ;)
