Could you please advise if there are any plans to update the sluggish 1.8Litre in the AH Astra in the near future? The wife prefers the extra power of the Mazda 3 but I would prefer to hold off for the Astra if it is not to far away.
Thanks in Advance.

You make a good point, as I have raised on the general forum. The diesel Astra will be released around mid year, but Holden have not said when the Euro petrol engines will be fitted to AH Astras. BUT, THEY WILL BE!.
Don't buy an AH Astra until they are.
Cheers, Pickles.

or just buy the diesel, which comes out at the end of the month.
Wheels did a review of that car (UK version) and said that once on the money it was a better thing to drive than the forthcoming SRi Turbo

Yep I've seen those specs--WHY would you spec a less powerful engine in the auto version?!!- Holden "amaze" me sometimes.
cheers, Pickles.

Mazda does same with the RX8.
The auto is severly underpowered compared to the manual. Probably worried about warranty issues with the autos.

Ok, i just got back from ASTRA DIESEL AND SRI TRAINING.
Auto has lower outputs because they couldn't get an auto to handle the tourqe that the manual engine puts out.
The manual also has a "Sport" button on the dash, just like the auto's. However this makes the Electronic throttle react quicker and reduces throttle travel, and also quickens the steering ratio.
Sounds like fun :D

I meet someone who has driven one of the new turbo-diesels in Australia. He was very impressed with the power of the manual. Also the economy.

We have an Astra diesel Manual at our dealership and after driving it i was completley blown away.
I love my AH CDX to bits, besides the lack of power, and the diesel engine fixes all this.
Love the "sport" mode button on the dash. It re maps the electronice throttle and quickens the steering ratio.

The holden web site was today updated with Info/Specs/Pics of the Astra CDTi (the Diesel Astra for those of you not following) and the SRI (The Astra Turbo Petrol)

My wife and I will be in the market shortly for a small/medium hatch or wagon and I have been looking closely at the AH astra wagon (amongst others). I have read reviews saying they are a good thing but could do with a little more grunt. According to most euro OPEL websites, the petrol 1.8 we have here is basically their highest output petrol motor other than 2 litre turbo versions. Considering the current 1.8 is also euro IV compliant, are we actually likely to see the introduction of new petrol engines in the short term?
Judging from the current range in europe, I can't seem to get any hint that new engines are in the offering. More of an issue than the power output is that I don't want to purchase soon only to have a new engine available shortly afterwards.
On a slightly different line, has the CDXi version of hatch been canned?
I can only find CD and CDX version for hatch, wagon and coupe on the holden website. When did this happen?
Thanks.

CDXi was a available as a hatch only, was dumped with the release of the AH6.5 which was released about a month ago.
Instead the price of the CDX has gone up $500 but now includes the front fog lights, 6 airbags (both of which were on the CDXi) and semi automatic climate control (CDXi was fully automatic) and the leather heated sports seats become a $2200 option (standard on the coupe, not available on the wagon). All CDX's now have the previous CDXi alloy wheels.
On the engine front, considering Holden just did this update, and released the diesel and SRi Turbo i doubt an engine upgrade will be coming any time soon.

Hi, I spend some time online with British Car sites, and Vauxhall have just released a new 1.8l DOHC with variable Valve timing with 103 Kw and (if I remember correctly) 185 NM torque. This is rated with better fuel economy than the standard 1.8 but as yet does not appear in the Vauxhall Astra. One would expect to see it some time in the near future in Astras and then we would have a competitive engine against Mazda/Ford, and Corollas.
But for me, I am about to put the money down on a new manual Astra diesel - the way of the future. My 6 YO Astra CD manual Hatch, has performed flawlessly for me, but I want the performance and economy of the diesel, and I suspect, the better retained value for a diesel in the future. On top of that, diesel is now priced quite close to standard unleaded, and cheaper than 95 or 98 RON that i use in my Astra as the engine definitely runs better on the higher octane fuel.

With the release of the AH7 range, in November there will be an SRi 2.2 with 110kW available in both 5 door and 3 door

I'd like to see the 2.2 in the wagon also.
Could come down to pure marketing - do the number of wagons sold justify a 2.2 version? For every AH wagon I reckon I see 20 hatches.

as far as i know the wagon will stay 1.8
wish they would put the 2.2 in it though

hey i currently have a commodore vz exec and thanks to shitty fuel prices my work have forced me to go to a astra cdx or cdti not sure which one but i done me reserch on the td but need to know what the cdx is like performace wise etc and when holden is gonna update the astra cdx engine and what will i be to? thanks

Holden won't be updating the CDX engine any time soon.
However with the AH7 update due in showrooms october/november they will be introducing the SRI in 5 door and Coupe with a 2.2L engine (not turbo). I would go this above the CDX, it will also come with 6speed manual, ESP and the leather seats as standard.
Or go for the CDTi in the manual, haven't driven the auto yet but the manual is amazing!

Will there be any updates to the Astra CDTi in the AH7 range?
I'm pretty close to upgrading from my AH Astra CD to one, but am wondering if I should wait for the next model if it's coming that soon - and if they'll be adding any extras or revising the pricing (downwards!).
Thanks for any help/info!

Why won't Holden put the diesel engines into the wagon body. I'd buy (another) one if they did!

I've heard they may do that down the track after seeing how the CDTi hatch sells...
It would be a good move! Especially if they can price it a bit below the 307 HDi wagon.

i would hazard a guess that there won't be any huge differences due to the car only being on the market for 6 months. Probably just minor colour and trim changes? Who knows?
And i don't think the price will go anywhere, its already a fantastic price!
Save up some more money ;)

I have CDTi manual with 680 km on the clock and I reset the trip computer at purchase...it's now showing an average 5.5 L/100km, that's based on a 30 minute round trip to work on fairly free flowing roads 60-80 km/hr.
And it does all this while going like a rocket :)

With 1100 km I am now averaging 5.3...this is particularly impressive given that I am not exactly trying to drive economically...can't resist all that torque (320 Nm)

I see the diesel wagon has finally arrived. Too bad it isn't available in the manual version - ie, the one with the better engine.
