View Full Version : Which Chamois Do You Use???

Or more to the point, what do you find best drys off your car after washing it?
Ive tried meguires and other brand of chamois, but the best one in my opinion... for ease and speed of use was the one Holden made that had the Hot house green VY SS ute printed on it.
I had a black VY SS ute, and found other chamois not upto the task of removing all the water beads/mist, with black being the hardest colour to clean PROPERLY.
The time has come to renew my chamois.... and as far as I know the one i described above is no longer made, and the current holden chamois isnt much chop compared to the old ones they used to sell.
Most common problem is they just leave trails of water/beads rather than absorbing, no matter how much i wrung them out.
What do you guys use/ find works best?

I have a meguires one and it works really well I reckon. Normally the softer they are the better they work. Come to think of it normally the older they are the better they work.
Most of the time I am too lazy though and just go for a drive down the highway to dry it. :nyuk: This doesn't work as well though.

Oates Enka Fill car cloth (comes in an orange tube)
The one I use is about 16 years old and still going strong.
Just bought another one for the oldest daughter so she can
help with the drying. I have tried other chomois over the years,
but none come close to this imo.
Edit: Your dead right about them working better with age Lewis,
the new Enka fill I bought is not as nice to use as the old one yet

I second that, I have tried many over the years, but now use the Meguires one in the black tube. Excellent chamois as long as you rinse them out after use in warmish to hot water.

I bought a new 'Kanebo Plas Chamois' 5 years ago from Autobarn and it is brilliant a couple of wipes and not a trace of water left very absorbent
and nice and soft and easy to wring out.

Meguires for me, about 4 years old and still perfect. Well worth the $15.

The Meguires one is the best but my wife ( being a detailer ) when she gets a new one washes it in the washing machine a few times to get that wore in feel. Thats what most of the car yards use.

speaking to a detailer earlier this week, he suggested a good quality leather chamois, and then to follow up with a quick detailer or waterless touch up to get rid of any 'marks' - this is of course after washing drying etc
this takes car of the beads and watermarks left behind.
ps - a good coat of polish on your car will stop water sticking to it after a wash - marks are caused by water attaching itself to impurities in the paint - these can be removed by clay blocking.
another trick to reduce water sitting on the car after rinsing is to let water 'sheet ' off the paint work - spraying causes droplets, where as just a gentle steady stream of water will sheet off the car reducing chamois time

I had some synthetic one with little holes in it that i bought from kmart that was ok, until it got chemicals on it and went crusty. the car yard i worked in used similar ones for evrything from chamoising cars down to cleaning marks off the carpet
now i've got an Aion Plas Chamois synthetic. well, that is what it says on the tube. its kinda rubbery and works pretty good.
another trick to get that worn in feeling is to blast them with a highpressure hose. make sure the ground is clean and it works good.
I second that, I have tried many over the years, but now use the Meguires one in the black tube. Excellent chamois as long as you rinse them out after use in warmish to hot water.

When your not using your Meguires one, leave it sitting in a bucket of water with some Meguires soft wash, days, weeks, wont matter, the longer it sits in the water, the softer it becomes.

Kanebo Chamois.
I used to have my own detailing business and I found this the best.
Replace it every year or so, and it is excellent.
The non synthetic ones I find dry out and distort etc....

'Kanebo Plas Chamois' for me - large size not the small one.

I'll second that ...the Enka ones seem to be the only ones that work.
My missus bought me a Kaneba (spelling?) for last Christmas and
it went in the bin the first time I used it ..would not suck a sailor
off ya sister...just left smears everywhere and I ended up re-washing the car
(and that was after soaking it like the instructions said)
cheers

i can agree with that 100%. They are a great chomois. Being a panel beater and car detailer, Oates Enka would have to be one of the very best and have a long life.
And yes the older and uglier they are the better they work.

Ive tried nearly every type of Chamois on the Australian and US market along with every other polish which ends up at the back of the shelf when something better comes along.
However the last 12 months I’ve tried a new specially designed Microtex Microfibre chamois from Indianapolis USA thanks to my uncle.
Its roughly 6.5sq.ft in size, Its Microfibre which is the only thing i let near my paint and it can soak up almost a full bucket of water with out squeezing it out and its also washable.
Most chamois will actually start rubbing back your polish after a while no matter how soft they are or brand name they carry.
I can chamois the entire car without it needing to be squeezed and the 'finish' is almost like you’ve polished the car. It leaves no streaks, doesn't get smelly or mouldy and is easy to use. And its only around $10-15US.
This would have to be best Chamois i have used imo.

Howdy,
well I'm going to vote for 2. I have a Meguires ( Black tube job ) that is around 5 years old. It's great but you have to keep it clean as already mentioned. I also have an Oates Enka Fill ( Orange Tube ) that is also very good, or it was for the last 20 years or so. It got left on the parcel shelf and now is somewhat warped from over heating. It still works well but mainly on the Wifes SV6....

Agreed, forget the old style chamois; get a microfibre drying towel, they are simply much better.
