Under normal circumstances im pretty sure A/A are, but theres not always enough room for a big enough one, which is where A/W is useful

For my 2 cents worth...
I believe water to air is more efficient, but its downside is being too bulky to use in an average car.
can anyone correct me?

Bth have their place...
Their upsides and downsides....
A/A can make you boot laggy as it has to pressuize a larger area....
W/A can suffer from heatsoak as the "water" is going round and round and the inercooler may not remove all the energy put in by the intake system....
Testing the sytem for temps is the main thing that will determine whethe your ystem is being ffective.....
you could always make your w/a intercooler run through and ICEbox.... ALA TRYHARD

Water transfers heat better than air so it tends to be more efficent and great for drag use as you dont run it long enough to suffer from heat soak.
You can also fill it with icewater etc for short stints, but as with everything it has downsides too.
