View Full Version : Rear seat belts in early Commodores

Hoping someone with a VB-VH Commodore (or a good memory) can clear up my curiosity on this one.

I looked at two early Commodores today - a VH SL and a base model VB - and both of them had the type of seatbelts in the rear that you have to manually adjust after putting them on. (Not sure of the name, but hopefully you get the idea - ie, you buckle them, and then adjust them to suit you).

When I was a kid, my Dad had a base model VB with some options from higher up models, and I'm almost certain that it had normal retractable seatbelts in the back, in the same way that all modern cars do.

Is my memory failing me, or were retractable rear belts only an option on early Commodores?

(And while we're at it, what's with the lack of legroom in the early models? Both were manuals and I hurt my ankle getting out of the VH because I was jammed between the steering wheel and the seat...)

Cos while the english are still trying to master the oil leak, Holden is still trying to master the art of using available space like the japs!

Or a parts Book.

OK

VB - VH SL based cars had non-retractor type rear belts.
All other VB - VH had retractor type rear belts.

All VK commodores had retractor type rear belts

Cheers, that clears that up. My Dad's VB was a base model but it had options from the SL and SL/E models (such as velour trim instead of vinyl) - the retractable seat belts must have been one of them.

My daughter has a VC SL she is the second owner and it has 'Retractor Belts'
in the rear. Maybe it was an option?

as one whose job in 1977 (thru to '82) was to interpret GMH Build sheets from Acacia Ridge Pagewood Dandy and Elizabeth with UC torries HZ Holdens and early bird commodores, the answer is this......
the level of the car determined the standard fitments and within each level
there were production packs...with standard options
the base VB sedan was the LD1 (2850) engine M20 trans GV4 diff with AM radio :bravo:
reclining front buckets (XS6) and vinyl trim
but you could order a 104 pack ..with up the ante to
3300 (L14) engine with M40 (Trimatic) dwell control wipers (CD4)
LH external mirror (DF3) rear speakers (U80) drivers seat height adjuster AG5
and retracting rear belts A47 and vinyl trim and AM radio ..and no stuff like power steering (N40)
or even A/c (C60)....included in that pack. You could order a stereo cassette
(UN3) to replace the AM jobbie even tinted windows if the option was listed as an option for the option pack :yup:
but if NOT listed no way....
The SL (became SL/X now Berlina) was the first car level to get rear retracting belts as standard

and it stayed like that even thru VC and VH
on VH the first pack to get rear retractors was the 144 pack (yep a 4 cylinder jobbie)
hth

cheers
