View Full Version : Kids in coupes?
Having not long having a baby and the ute not looking too practical as a second car I was thinking about getting into a monaro. The boy is only 6 weeks old and I was just wondering how other people have gone with a rear facing baby seat in the monaro. The monaro would be only used on occasion as a family car with a wagon as the main family beast.
What do you guys reckon?
Cheers.

I wouldnt do it, access to the back of a Monaro is a pain in the A$$. I would use the rear seats in mine maybe once every few months and I still dont like it! 4 door for the win in this case. Just my opinion though.
Mate I'd have to disagree about the access to the rear ,ive got two boys (6,4) im always leaning in to belt them up (or belt them jk)Dont no about a rear faceing baby seat, never had to

I concur, its annoying as hell especially people who are first timers. You always have to get out and move the seat forward for them and even then it's still a little too tight for my liking. If I had kids, the monaro would either be sold or used only as a weekend warrior as by that stage it would be fully worked :)

I would ask NickS about that one. There was one baby seat in the coupe when i saw it.

I usually have 2 seats in there, just pulled one out to use in the SS while it's at Sonny's shop.
Rearward facing would be virtually impossible, forward facing is fine. Keen has 2 boys (6 & 4) and I have 2 boys (4 & 2) and both of us have them in and out of the car fairly regularly. We actually took the Coupe on the cruise to Berrima, fitted all 4 of us, bags full of baby stuff and the 3 wheel jogging pram in the boot. It's not as easy as a 4 door, but I wouldn't say don't get one because of it.
If you have very small babies and it's your only car then it probably won't work, otherwise it's fine ... go for it !!!

One reason not to use a rear facing baby seat in the monaro is the side air bags. They would catapult the baby seat into the rear windscreen in the event of an accident. Not a good thing to have happen, especially when containing a baby.

Good point. Another issue is that there is no middle seat, hence no middle baby bolt. If you have a REAR facing baby capsule, you would either have to lift bubs over the top of the capsule every time, or you would have to get in the other side of the car and lean across more than half the rear width to reach bubs. And, one thing I can promise you, everyone I know loves sitting in the back, but virtually every one of them almost pull a hamstring getting in and out quickly.

We found a baby seat in the back a bit of a pain, but the kids grow so quick !!! before we knew it, Bella is climbing thru and fitting her own seat belts :girl:
With a baby only 6 weeks tho,....4 doors would be a lot easier on the back. ( but i'm an old fart !! )

Old fart for sure... my old man is younger than you... im sure you're young at heart though ;)
Back on to the topic though, Mum's V8 LandCruiser is hard enough to get my 5 yo sisters into (in the back in their booster seats). I wonder if a coupe is easier than that... (maybe i can convice mum to get a monaro)

I'd just get the Monaro. As you say it will not be your main car for the family and you will only regret it if you get something else...

two kids and have been on holidays (QLD and south coast) with the kids in back no dramas (no baby seat)
Thanks for the replies,
I know its not going to be the easiest thing to get the Max in the back but it would only be occasionally as the wagon is the family bus. As far as I know kids can be in forward facing seats at around 6 months, so it would not be that big a deal then?
Cheers.

Nick thats a Sad sight that NO HSV Coupe should see hehehe.. You have 2 cars now to choose from, lets not have that repeat ;)
From what I have been told its a pain in the butt... Reason why I managed to get my Monaro pretty cheap from a family friend. Pervious owner tried it for 6 months but just gave up...... Never the less the day will come where I might have kids in the back :( but till then I AM FREE :D

I've had my Monaro for three years now, use it every day. Its no problem for kids, my daughter has been getting in and out of the back as long as I have owned it, your just lazy if you can't wait 1 minute for the seat to go back ect.

Back on topic, ask ssberlina how he goes with a youngster in the back of a 'Naro. He's been doing it for quite a while with young Bec.

The original question was about REARWARD facing baby seats. That will be a pain in the butt. It will be a fair bit easier once forward facing seats can be used.
Another thing to remember is that these seats move forward VERY slowly to get rear access. Waiting for the seats to move, then reaching in and trying to unstrap bubs will take time, and if it's raining, be ready for you and the car to get pretty wet.......
Once the kids get a little older, and can use normal seats, they will get in and out themselves pretty easily.

Yeah, and if they are anything like my kids, those seats won't be
coming forward slowly anymore

The rear facing seats do not fit.. We tried with our Monaro and there is no way in hell you can get a rear facing seat to fit. Forward facing is fine. We had our 2 kids in our old Monaro but in the end we had to sacrafice it :( for something bigger.
