hi, i'm looking at buying a vu ss ute and have a feeling it may be a s-pack made to look like a ss. is there an easy way to tell for sure?

Probably not. If people want to make theirs cars a lookalike, they can do it pretty easy. Just like turning a VU SS into a HSV MALOO!!!
The "S" Pak V8 VU's are that much different to the SS's. Body kit, wheels, FE2 suspension & a few more little things here & there
Your best bet will to be ask to see the third party & insurance paperwork & also paperwork from the dealer if its owned from brand new.

I hope this helps,

Justin...

You could get the VIN and ring a Holden Dealer (parts department) to ask them whehter it is or not.
Also on the ID plate it should read to have FE2 Suspension (SS and cop only)
SS embroided on seats
LED high stop lamp on rare of cabin
SS in spot lights in spoiler
Blacked out headlamps (no chrome)
Drivers & passenger air bag
Of course SS badging

seats/dash/coloured gages e.t.c should be a dead giveaway... check the id plate (think that is what it is) as it should say what suspension is in it (fe2) which s'paks didnt have in the utes in the vu...

FE2 can be factory optioned on all models, and appears on the build plate if it is - so checking the VIN number with Holden is the safest bet. Just ring their customer service line.

Check the vin number against the explanation in the handbook. The model types should be differentiated by one or two different letters in the VIN number.

the ss has bucket seats, the s have standard seats

Which is easily changed if you're trying to make an S look like an SS though.

The safest bet before shelling out money would be to get the VIN and go through Holden.

pretty sure that only breeaks the VIN down to the 'base' luxury level ie: exec/berlina/calais and body type. S and SS are both based from exec.

Need to ring the dealer

Pretty simple way to tell is, if the ute has only drivers side airbag it's most likely an S.

VUSS utes I'm pretty sure had driver and passenger airbags fitted.

Yeah SS do have twin airbags, i dunno if the S came with that or not.

Check the rego papers..

bottom of the page "Variant" it should say SSV8
"Shape" Ute "Engine Cap" 5700 etc...etc..

I have an original Holden sales brochure on the VU ute, just looking through the specifications and notice that the SS has a roof mounted spoiler with stop lamp which was not an option on the other utes.

I think today...with money to spend anything can be an option...
as long as your willing to pay for it it can be fitted...
as said before get the VIN No. and ring Holden...

You can pretty much option anything up if you want to wait...

Also the SS overhead brake light would not be hard to fit into an S/Exec
