Hi All, here is a bit of a splurb about my beast.

The VX HSV GTS which does make 300fwkw from factory.
My car has been down the strip more than once and the first time that I took it there I got a 14.5 (lets just say I was dissapointed with that)
I had a very bad case of axel tramp so I replaced my suspension and thought what the heck lets throw in a Alpine stereo as well!
I then took it to symmonds plains and got a best lap time of 1:06.45 which I was happy with!
Then down the strip again, the fastest time I got in full street trim (stereo, spare, standard tyres etc...) was 13.779 I was much happier with this time factoring in the extra weight of the stereo (approx 100kg's with amps, sub, sound deadening etc...)

So at the HIMS(Hobart Internation Motor Show) I won the free tune by Eddie Tassone
First run I got 346HP and eddie quickly tells me that my car has already been edited but it was one of the worst he had seen
2 hours later he got it to 371.3HP and de-tuned it to 365HP (The next day I got a 365.6HP)

So what else has been done to my car???
I have a K&N air filter, twin 3" exhaust (no rear mufflers or resinator) with a custom made "x" pipe which was made at Holden SA factory (by the previous owner who worked there)
I am not sure if there are any internal mods to my engine and I don't want to pull it apart as it is working.
My car sits just on 100mm off the ground, thanks to King spring & Koni shocks.
I have also installed the VX II HSV Headlights which are the "blacked" ones (yes I need to get some photo's up)
And I have also had my guards rolled to stop the tyre's rubbing.

The other question some people may want to know is.... Have I noticed a difference since the edit???? s**t YEAH
I now expect to pull a 12 something down the quarter now as the car feels like it has a lot more torque and the power feels stronger earlier in the rev range.

Now, I am happy to give anyone a raz down the 1/4 if they want, and do I care if I win or lose??? not really, but I want to win! If I didn't why would I run my car down the 1/4

Eddie also told me this is the best power figures from a stockish GTS (could be the Tassie weather) and I will soon know if it was a happy dyno next month when it hit the dyno again!

Most other peoples power figures on the dyno appeared to accurate so I would assume that the 365HP is close to the mark!

If anyone has any question just ask

And just to add a quick thing about the HSV GTS's.
I have build number 71 of 287 for a VX series 1 HSV GTS
What this difference between a Club Sport and a GTS (besides $30k) big breaks, an engine which is actually a C4b (not an LS1) which has been enhanced by Callaway in the USA!
Comfy seat, factory shift light, 3.9 hydratrak LSD diff, and a few other wanky bits.

Now here are some photo's

Nice neat looking car.
You must have a hard time whenever you see a speedbump in that thing though?

gts071
05-06-2006, 06:05 PM
Thanks for the comments :)

Speedbump are no real problem. I have only had a problem with one that I got the exhaust stuck on... So after a quick stint in reverse and taking a different street *mental note not to go up that street again* and no more problem :D

But I can normally tell when I am going to have a problem and it at just the right height where taking it slow is the key.

is it safe to assume it'll have the same affect on a VY??
as in same guard - rim clearance?

gts071
05-06-2006, 06:52 PM
I would "assume" yes. Bare in mind that I had my rear guards rolled as my tyres rubbed on the guard.
Plus I have 19" rims so it would also depend on what rims you have on your vy

vyssbeast, how wide are your tyres? I am running 245/35/19 and I think that if I had 235 on the rear I would not have had a problem as it only just rubbed. But it was enough to give me the willies!

OLS108, yeah I just got a new set of rims as the old ones had gutter rash (from the previous owner) and it was enough to annoy me. I love the rims so I decide to get a new set, even tho I almost got caught a couple of times with copies, but I wanted genuine since it is on a genuine GTS :)

The engine is called a C4B which is basically a LS1. Different Cam, Head, Throttle body.

yeh im currently running 235's (were 245s previously)
so should be ok
but your ride height is spot on so i think ill take note of those part numbers for when the time comes ... but atm im in need for at least 1 new tyre (blame the LSD for that LoL)
but awesome ride mate ... btw why didnt you try and get the rims repaired? would have worked out much cheaper but by the sounds of it that isnt an issue!
cheers mate

TUFVT, yeah thats what I wanted with the boot install (not that I actually use the boot) so I have the room just in case I ever need it. Plus it looks neat and tidy and not over the top.

OzMystic, I will get a photo of the inside in the next couple of days. Not that there is much to see as the splits in the rear are in the standard speaker hole and its the same with the front speakers.
The only nice thing to see is the screen and centre channel speaker.

vyssbeast, yeah 235's should be fine *I think :) *
and the reason I got the new rims were to avoid have my car sitting on jack stands as no one in Tassie can do the shadow crome (since then I found a place 200km's away can do them) but it only cost me $1,000 as I got the new set cheap and sold my old set.

Hey mate, nice car! Any ideas/hints as to what the internal mods are?

gts071
07-06-2006, 04:40 PM
I have no idea if I have internal mods or not. The engine has not been touched in the last 12 months as thats how long I have owned it for.

I will be taking it on the dyno again in about 2 weeks and I will see if it will pull similar power figures.

The 371HP was the peak power made, then they de-tuned it to 365HP @ the wheels. As far as I am aware it is all standard but it could be a happy dyno, some internal mod or just really really lucky!!

I will post up the next dyno sheet in around 2 weeks after it has been dynoed again on a different dyno.

Well it's about time I give this another quick update!
First off, I finally have thrown some video footage of the GTS on the dyno at the pro utes dyno day (yes I know I don't have a ute :) ) last year! So if you haven't heard the GTS at WOT here is your chance :)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBoFJVvuarQ

I have also had the tune 'tweaked' by Steve (OZTRACK) when he was in tassie to fix a couple of things and I have felt a difference plus its a bit more friendly on fuel :) there has been no major power increase (as this has been previously tuned) but it is a bit happier earlier on in the rev range and a touch smoother with the power!

I entered the tas commodore club dyno day on the 17th of June and managed to get 245rwkw so stoked about that as I managed to win the over 5L V8 class! Here is the dyno sheet.
http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f285/gts071/GTS%20Photos/2007_Dyno_Day.jpg

Also my clutch is really on it last legs, I have now started to notice it slipping more and more so I ordered my textralia z grip clutch which has just arrived, I hope to get it installed over the next couple of weeks. Ordered from http://www.textralia.com.au
http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f285/gts071/GTS%20Photos/Tex/TextraliaZGrip.jpg

Enjoy!

I forgot, here is a dyno reading taken some months ago, but good to compare with one above which is thanks to Steve :)

Not bad for stock gts engine and lowered. I did take out the spare wheel this time though.

Now on the hunt for some 17's and sticky rubber!

Big thanks goes out to Oztrack for the tune and Plan B for the Tex!
Between the 2 I picked up 4 10 tenths of a second.

With practice I can see a 13.0xx or even a 12.9xx with a cold night :)

Yeah I think i'll try to find some cheap 17" rims and looking at getting some re55's or similar to start with. Don't want to go for full slicks just yet, need a lot more HP first :)

I am just about to fit (or should I say have someone else fit) the following bits
Harrop Sports Diff Cover (only been sitting here for 6-7 month)
Difilippo 1 & 3/4 HPC coated
100cpsi Ballistic Racing Cats
powerbond 25% u/d pulley

I'll see if I can get some video footage as it sounds now and what it sounds like after the extractors and cat so people can hear the sound difference they make.

If all goes to plans I will be back out at the drags on the 20th of December so i'll see how much difference it makes.

Just saving up for valve springs and OTR next!

very good vid to demo the tramp issue chris!!!
shows pretty clearly what you hear and see at the track, and on the road, in these things...

my cure for axle tramp was to ditch the SSSL rear springs and put the stock rear springs back in... but i can appreciate that not everyone wants to drive around in a monster truck... so some money needs to be thrown at certain area's to try and prevent it happening.

can't wait to hear it with the new pipes chris, she'll be much louder than my ute then :) :)

Well the car is back and my fark is it LOUDER!

I have lost the unique exhaust note I once had and enjoyed, I am about 90% happy with the new sound just not 100% sure if it is actually too loud.

It feels more punchy and the only thing that I have to back that up is when you nail it the sun roof cover would open slightly, now it opens a good inch or more. Not sure if that is because I have a little more poke at the right foot or the harrop cover helping keep both rear stuck to the ground or a touch of both?

Anyway I'll get some vids up over the weekend so you can hear the difference and get some feedback.

It took me long enough to get in the 12's and now there is no turning back!

I've been told Santa is bringing me a rip shifter so I wont miss 3rd gear and pick up another 10th or so. In my 3rd race I had a reaction of .470 (new PB) and I missed 3rd gear so I only managed a 13.7

Now I have to figure out what tyres I want to run and that should improve my 60 footers!
So far it is between the RE55's 255/40/17 or the MT street 275/40/17. Just need see what the costs are and which one will offer the better solution (for the money).

the MT's would be a bit cheaper than the RE55 i reckon...... and a much more drag focussed tyre...

check out everything in the Drag Radial range mate... BF Goodrich, Mickey Thompson, Hoosier, Nitto... there's plenty out there but you'll be spending $400 - 500 each on the tyres mate... it'll sting you pretty hard but you should get a lot of passes on them :)

try to make sure you keep them at 26" tall and no more...

Hey Chris, congrats on the pb mate, as discussed there is a bit more in her too.

In regard to tyres my MT streets are 36 passes young and showing only approx 50% wear. So my estimate on 600/set is $8 dollars a pass.

that first dyno run AT =10 IT=36 would explain the high reading...

gts071
22-12-2008, 06:47 PM
Correct!

Which is why I think the power figure is closer to the more recent dyno runs of 240-245rwkw.

Back when it was first run on the dyno I didn't know much about dynos. But the AT & IT was similar on first run (prior to re-tune) so the improvement is still there, just not that much HP.

Either way I am stoked with 12's now and I am itching to get back out there and do it again!

The rip shifter is getting fitted tomorrow so i'm looking forward to giving it a good test before Power Cruise on the 31st :)
In the mean time I thought I would through up a custom drawing of the GTS I got for Christmas.

Well the ripshift is fitted and it got a great work out over the weekend. Even though I still manage to miss 3rd once when I was giving Ryan a razz in the VL. I just didn't push the stick far enough forward... still getting use to the new feel!

Anyway here are some photos of the ole girl in action that my Fiancée took over the weekend at Powercruise 16 in Tassie.

Thanks guys!

Here is the the run on the dyno while I was at powercruise. And before anyone asks yes I think the dyno is happy as there is no way a stock engine with just a full exhaust and a tune can make 290rwkw. If someone could explain why there is no correction and what kind of increase this offers it would be appreciated. First dyno run with extractors and cats fitted.

Well what's been happening in the land of my GTS recently?

As many may know the GTS's (C4B engines) are prone to lifter, cam and valve spring issues. Lucky for me I only had the one springs issues which was fixed without any other damage, but I was starting to get more and more worried since taking it the drags, track days, power cruise and dyno event more often I would had to see my car drop a spring north of 3500RPM. So the best solution to the problem is to get some more power and replace the cam & springs before something goes wrong when I least expect it. So after a year or more of looking I had finally decided on a cam to install in my baby and the right workshop to do it. I wanted to select a cam that sounded tough, produced good number and could still be a daily driver if needed, even though since it is no longer driven daily it could have been on the border.

The cam I have been investigating for the last 6-12 months has been the 232/234 which met my requirements (if tuned correctly) after reading countless pages of information. Most of the comments I have heard are 232/234 is the biggest you want to go in a M6 for a daily, some still think this is a touch on the large side. The comp cam by default specs are 232/234 @ .050" lift, 112 LSA (Lobe separation angle) with valve lift of 595/598, making power between 2400-7200 RPM. After talking with Phonsy from GM Motorsport they offered a similar spec’d cam (Street Racer) 232/234 @ .050" lift, making power between 2300-6700 *The rest of the specs are unknown expect by GM Motorsport. Personally I think the specs are around the valve lift is the same as the comp cams brand with a higher LSA (+2) so around the 114, therefore making idle a touch smoother and brings the power on slightly earlier.
I then realised this is common practice for people to order cams in and change the LSA either up or down anywhere between 1 and 4 to suite peoples need and car setup.

Now the hunt for the workshop / tuner began, I really wanted someone in Melbourne so I didn't have to drive for hours and there are quiet a few good workshops around that have produced good results which speaks louder than words. After reading pages and pages of results and customer feedback threads (mostly on the LS1 forum) I decided to go with GM Motorsport as Phonsy is really switched, their dyno is accurate and they have plenty of happy customers.

Just to top off the cam install I was in the hunt to track down a OTR CAI and the one I have decided on is the one from DUSpeed off the LS1 forum which looks stock (or should I say, doesn't stand out like a big pair of nuts) and performs very well.

So after jumping on the boat and rocking up at GMM I spent a fair while confirming my install (Cam, push rods and springs + retainers) and what GMM/Phonsy are going to do. So a week goes by and I pick my baby up from GMM, due to Phonsy and Wayne out doing stuff I never got to talk to them on the day (no big deal) and oh boy could I feel the power difference.I should really say here that Phonsy called me on the Sunday to discuss how everything went and to ensure I was happy with the results and to answer any questions that I may have. Like most things you don't believe it until you see it, so having a dyno sheet just wasn't enough for me (even though I could feel the power difference) I wanted to see it for myself, that chance came last night at the Southside Performance dyno day (27/06/2009) in Burnie.

The drive to Burnie resulted in 11.4L per 100k's with around 104kmph being the average speed, and it had 12.2 when I got back (300+ k's) and that included driving around Burnie looking for somewhere to eat and the car idling and running on the dyno, so I'm pretty happy with the fuel economy. Around town for the last week or so I was averaging around 20.1L per 100k's with the average speed being 30kmph.

Well that enough crap from me about what's been happening, here is a video from last night and some dyno sheets, enjoy :)

Not a daily for me.

But my Fiancée drives it 1-2 day(s) a week when I travel in our other car for work, and then I drive it on weekends if the weather is good. She drives it around town for work and sometimes gets stuck in traffic, but doesn't find it that much different from before.
The big thing that she now hates is how loud it is, the OTR and Cam have made a sound so much deeper and louder everyone just look at it when you are driving around. She gets scared when the police are around as she keeps thinking they will book her :)

So all in all, I think I could drive this everyday without any problems, the only thing that I would do is change the cat back to either an X-Force or Di Filippo with mufflers so it isn't so loud. I still may do this in the future.

I have just read of the whole thread and I'm impressed, my short list was a VY 300 or a VZ senator and the senator won (on price) but I also looked at a couple of VX senator 300's but the missus didn't want a manual..
Just curious as what you think added the most sound to your exhaust the bigger extractors or the Ballistic cats.

gts071
28-06-2009, 05:56 PM
It is hard to say what made the biggest difference, I would guess the extractors in one respect but the cat are only 100CPI so this also had a big impact... too hard for me to say and it would only be a guess. Maybe check the Sureflo section and see what people have said when they just fitted the cats?

But it's the no mufflers or resinators that makes it loud, prior to the OTR and Cam it started to sound a little 'tinny' which started to give me the shits a bit, now it does sound tough and I think it would sound even deeper (plus quieter) with a new cat back installed with mufflers :)

Glad your happy with your purchase surfwagon, now I'm just about to have a read about your toy!

Just read through your 'entire' post from the beginning.
Sounds nice now going down that highway.

What an awesome write up in progress. This is what I love about this forum.
This just brings back all the memories of my first VXII R8 Clubby as it was also a work in progress and I was going down the cammed and stalled route.

I actually had to change my exhaust mufflers after I got the cam installed. It was rattling windows in our house when I started it and caused a lot of attention on the road. Fun though.

Great stuff, enjoy the car mate! Love all the HSV VX models and now own another one similar after regretting selling my old one.

Well I finally convinced the financial controller that I need to replace my hydratrak centre over to a truetrac for 'saftey' as the hydratrac was becoming too unpredictable as to when it would spin a single, twins or even a bit of both. The other saving grace was I managed to track down the Harrop one for $825 delivered to my door :D :D

So hopefully that should be installed within the next few weeks but I need to change a few other things over at the same time. I will keep you all updated how it goes.

Well in the last 8 months SFA has happened with the ole girl.

Apart from getting the Alternator rebuilt and fixing a minor wiring issue. Diff still hasn't been installed as I kept putting it off since we were saving for a wedding.

So the update is really just to say WOO HOO since I just made the last repayment so it is now FULLY MINE :) :)
Now since I get married in like 5 weeks I won't be getting the diff change until early next year so hopefully it will be in before the next powercruise.

Anyway... I still can't believe I now finally own it :D

Just a side note as you have the hydratrack do not forget to get some standard LSD or aftermarket stub axles. The hydra track ones are totally different to the ones that fit in the Trutrak. Wreckers for stock ones or Gforce for after market versions is the way to go. I use the Gforce ones. Good aussie dollar now too.
Also make sure the preload is spot on with them trutraks as they can be a pain on the roads if not set right.

Well a very long time between posts, but I have one final update on this ole girl.

In the past 4-5 year she has driven < 1000km, this with a growing family and a change of jobs I sadly put her up for sale 2 weeks ago and the new owner drove her away yesterday. The new owner only got a VF GTS a few weeks ago so it's good to know it is going to a good home but I did have a bit of a tear when I heard her drive away :(
