hey mynaro car looks the goods, gotta say the photos where u blacked out the background make the turismo blue look a different colour, always felt the turismo blue should have only been a monaro colour is the only car that it suits properly, but black would be better

cheers maccas

PS:How do you remove all colour except the blue what edit software do you use it looks great.

Ok, listen carefully cos I'm only gonna explain this once. I use Photoshop and some basic tools within photoshop so the equivalents in other apps should be easily adaptable.

Step 1: First just load up the image you want to fiddle with. In this case I went searching for a red Monaro/GTO and found this lucky winner.

http://c5wiseguys.org/tswgto3.jpg

Step 2: Next we want to fiddle with the levels of specific colours so we go into the HUE/Saturation option.

http://www.red5.net.au/images/LS1/hilite-colour-1.jpg

Step 3: In here we have a drop down listing a few of the more common colours. Seeing as this is red, we want to select every other colour (not including Master as that works across the entire image) other than red.

http://www.red5.net.au/images/LS1/hilite-colour-2.jpg

Step 4: Once selected, drag the saturation slider all the way to the left, or to where that particular colour becomes totally greyed out. (If you drag it the other way, it boosts the colour. I do this to ever so slightly to increase the vibrancy of the colour I'm keeping).

http://www.red5.net.au/images/LS1/hilite-colour-3.jpg

Step 5: Ok, so all we are left with now is just any and all reds present in the picture. Notice that we still have some red gutters and some reddish bricks on the houses in the background. We'll need to manually desaturate those.

http://www.red5.net.au/images/LS1/hilite-colour-4.jpg

Step 6: We use the lassoo or selection tools as highlighted below to select around those areas that need further work. Careful not to select parts of the car that you want to keep red.

http://www.red5.net.au/images/LS1/hilite-colour-5.jpg

Step 7: Once selected, we just selected 'Desaturate' from the menu, or the equivalent keyboard short cut and voila, greyed out. Repeat steps 6 and 7 until you are satisfied with the results. Sometimes you may want to leave other parts of the image with the reds intact. All depends on the photo you are trying to achieve.

http://www.red5.net.au/images/LS1/hilite-colour-6.jpg

Step 8: At this point, you've got yourself a nice looking image but I like to go a little further and bring out some dynamics in the image to get more impact. I just adjust the brightness and saturation.

http://www.red5.net.au/images/LS1/hilite-colour-7.jpg

Step 9: Ok, drag the brightness down a little (this adjusts how 'black' an image will get) and adjust the contrast up a little (this adjusts how 'white' an image will get). By doing so you'll get deeper blacks and whiter whites from an otherwise dull flat image. Going even more extreme on these sliders will get you more High Contrast styled results.

http://www.red5.net.au/images/LS1/hilite-colour-8.jpg

Final Image: And here's the results of some little time and effort.

http://www.red5.net.au/images/LS1/tswgto3-after.jpg

Not to be outdone, I wanted to try this on a yellow car so I nominated Pickles for the second example. Huge difference.

Before:

http://www.red5.net.au/images/LS1/KMHGTO-before.jpg

After:

http://www.red5.net.au/images/LS1/KMHGTO-after.jpg

Note: It works better when you have the original, uncompressed image to work with as adjusting these sliders on a heavily compressed JPEG will result in you revealing the compression used with the appearance of blocky colours. You'll know what I mean when you see it.

Have fun,
Steve

Good to hear. This is another plus to not having a 'black' car NickS. ;) :stick:
Although, you could probably just leave the red brake calipers as red.

There is an easier way to do that in photoshop.

Once you opened your image go to the heading 'layer' and select 'duplicate layer'. It will ask if you want it as a background layer - select yes.

Then just desaturate all colours (master) as shown above, using the 'image' - 'adjust' - 'hue/saturation' tool.

Then go round the car using the lasso tool (again as shown above), being careful not to reveal the background (basically the opposite of what was mentioned above) once selected hit the delete key. The background remains whatever you changed it to and the original version of the car is revealed. This selection and delete process can be done in pieces if preferred.

To save as a jpg again select 'layer' - 'flatten image', then save as.

Done

The advantage to doing it this way is that the object which is to remain coloured, being a car in this case, doesn't change in colour or brightness at all. Obviously if you want to change it you can, just do that first before you do the duplicate layer.

For car related photoshopping check out the website below, it is very helpful:

That is one of the cleanest, most pristine Monaro's I have ever seen. You've done a good job looking after it.

If you ever decide to get your wheels painted, give Craig at colorurmags a call. I had a set of 17's powder coated for $250 and their faultless, and I'm super fussy about workmanship. http://www.colorurmags.com.au

Has it really been two years since I put anything in this thread? Sheesh.

Well, she's just crossed another milestone. It's a small number, but there are six of them.

Nice photography, nice fuel economy, nice radio station, and the lambo makes the monaro look likes it a landcruiser.:)

Hey mate! seen some of your photography skills on the FI forums as well, you're a photo genius! each photo in their own right amazes me. Do you work as a professional photographer? and if so who do you shoot for, and what is that you like taking pictures of most?

The monaro looks awesome too, your pictures have made me appreciate the turismo blue so much! i never liked it until i saw your photos haha.. well done mate

Thanks, fuel economy was good because I did a reset about a minute before I took the shot. Normally it would sit around 16L/100. Today it's sitting on 19L/100. What fuel crisis? :p

Thanks mate. Photography has only been part of my life for the last 3 years but yes it's getting better and starting to get a few wedding gigs too. So I guess some people out there feel the results are worthy enough to pay for. I'm not complaining.

I started off taking pics of cars but then you soon realise there is only so many photos you can take of a car. It has personality, but nothing like people, which is why I'm enjoying photography more doing wedding photography. There's so many different aspects that you can have fun capturing.

Photographing cars is just a release and you can really have some fun with a static object.

As they should, it's a great colour. Picked the car up from the service yesterday and at the dealership in the waiting bay there were all new HSVs and SSs but guess which car stood out like a sore thumb. ;)

Hey Manazo, no I'm not. Been asked to join but haven't felt the need to.

Thanks champ. :)

$4.5 mill is not bad for two years. Problem is I forgot where I put the stash. The kid down the street has some gold spokey-dokeys on his BMX. He looks shifty, especially with that 13 yr old mexican fluff of a moustache he's sporting.

Very nice car and the best hero colour that Holden has produced and I'm not at all biased ;)

G'day Steve, just went through this thread again & noticed you'd used a shot of our GTO for some adjustments.....I used to do a bit of photography myself, but only 35mm, with all sorts of different lenses etc. Haven't really got into digital, but it's certainly amazing what can be done in the "computer age" isn't it!
Love your Monaro, & love Turismo which would be one of the rarest colours would it not?
Just love all variations of the CV8, we've done just over 53000ks in our GTO, so you're a long way in front of us.
Cheers, Pickles.

Not 100% sure if Turismo is the rarest colour but I don't see as many of them around in that colour as I do others. Which can only be a good thing! =)

In VZ Monaro's the least colours I see are Turismo and for some strange reason Red....

Sorry guys, haven't been in here for a while. Alas, in April of last year the lease on the Monaro ended and after almost 6 years and 130,000km, the Blue Shmoo was sold in January to a new happy owner. He was the first to call, the first to come out and the first to buy on first inspection. It was truly a great car and I wanted to give her a nice send off so I organised for the South Eastern Freeway to be blocked off in both directions for an hour one Wednesday morning and took a photo of her with Dugs help.

Just kidding, a bit of photoshop trickery to make the freeway look empty for the lust hurrah.

Cheers,
Steve

Still got a blue car, with 2 doors, 6 speed manual and dual exhausts, but it's a Golf R. If Holden had continued on with a V8 Coupe of sorts, I'd be right in there with my money but alas the sedans don't interest me and as much as I love the ute, in particular the Maloo, I still wanted those extra seats in the back.

But yes, I still miss the Blue Shmoo but needed something fresh on the lease and zee Germans provided a nice solution for my needs.

Great photos of your Monaro. I have a torrid 06 GTO but I rather have your old color.
