What's the go if you fit say 18" wheels after having 16s stock on, say a WH Statesman? Do you need a new tyre placard? I've read the Modifications document from Qld Transport and the only restrictions they quote is that rolling diameter and tyre width can't exceed a certain % increase or decrease as a result of fitting aftermarket wheels and tyres. There is no mention of the tyre placard. My placard mentions 17s but not 18s.
Is the rule different in other states as I have seen a few tyre placards for sale on Ebay claiming that unless you buy one after fitting bigger wheels the car is unroadworthy.

I'm not sure about queensland, but i am pretty sure that in NSW you can fir 2" over what is specified on the tyre placard.

The tyre placard lists the minimum requirements for the vehicle NOT the maximum.
Other point to mention is that if an authority knows enough to want to check your tyre placard, he/she probably knows enough to pick if its been changed.
Ie VU SS Ute. Minimum wheel tyre combo is a 235/45/17 on a 17" rim. If you go fitting stocky 15" rims with 205 rubber, the vehicle (technically) isnt roadworthy.
Have a look at Ex Police SS comodores from Vic. The placard lists the min as a 17" compared to non vicpol SS which have min as 18".
This is because the coppers have the 17's fitted due to cost of tyres and replacement wheels.
Ive never seen a car crash caused by tyre/wheel combos that are less than the minimum listed on the placard. Cars dont crash themselves. People crash cars!

I changed mine to a 17" type placard when I changed the wheels.
HBD and HSV change the placard when a wheel and tyre change is done.
The main thing you have to watch out for is your load rating, as I think it is higher on a LWB.

I'm not worried I just got interested when the form for our skidpan day asked for the tyre pressures as per the tyre placard. When I went looking for info on the WH Stato (I wasn't home at the time to check) I found a few HSV ones for sale on Ebay with said claims.
Thanks guys and for $3.83 I'll ask the question next time I'm near a dealer - probably worth the few dollars.

:hide: So I 'm guessing my front Nankang street rubber at 165x65 on 15x4 pursuit rims don't quite make the grade  ...tis a good thing indeed the QLD wallopers have been well trained in directing there attention immediately towards the rear flanks of my fine steed.....It can now be said with some authority MT Drag radials have definite previously unforseen benefits...so long as they are still adorned with a smidgen of tread …..not once but twice now :D.........tis a truly wonderful sunny state is QLD.....
