G'day all,
Just started making a few mods to my 3.8 L VS ute. Nothing major yet - K&N filter, Iridium plugs & 10mm leads. Have toyed with the idea of changing the chip however I don't know if i'm throwing money away by doing this before other mods (like cold air induction, exhaust etc) I'm not expecting any major performance improvements (yet) but I would like to get it right the first time. Any tips greatly appreciated. cheers, Barney 1587

Hey Barney1587

I just got myself a new car, but my old car which i still gotta sell was a VN commodore 3.8l, which I got stock and did quiet alot of engine work to.
are you gonna get the computer tuned or just replace with a pre-programed chip??

does a K+N filter do much, is there a small gain there??

Just curious because I'm looking for any little mods I can do without permanantly modifying anything thanks too insurance :deal:

Don't know a lot bout having computer tuned. Is it best option to have it done when a new pre-programmed chip is added & am I in for spending big bucks to do it ?
The K&N filter I put in was a panel type (just replaced existing paper type filter) & I noticed an improvement immediately, although I did fit 10mm leads & Iridium Plugs at the same time. Improved performance & economy noticed. Fitting filter does not affect insurance, (I checked with my insurer before fitting)

hey well i fitted a aftermarker chip to my old car, picked it up for $150ish and it did make a noticable difference.
so again cheap way to get a good power gain.
if you are just doing all the little things like you have then for sure get a pre-programed chip.
it won't make any difference if you add this chip before or after any other mods like cold air etc...
unless you are getting it acutally tuned.

cheers
