The B43Racing VH made it's competition debut today. NAMSC (north australian motorsport club) and the darwin branch of the Rollaclub held a motorkhana at a disused airstrip south of darwin.

Last weekend, Bazz and myself decided to enter the vh in it for a bit of a laugh and for an excuse to drive it in anger for the first time in over 6 months. A trailer was sorted, harness fitted and interior stripped as much as possible and we were set.

I've never really driven a car sideways or on dirt before, so it was a new experience for me. Bazz hadn't driven an underpowered, single spinner car with no windscreen for a long time either, so it was a new experience for him too.

On arrival at the airstrip, the first thing i did was sneak off (hard to do with no exhaust) and teach myself how to slide and do handbrake turns. Bazz also had a quick blat to get used to the car.

The first test was a simple slalom with a bit of a loopy thing at the end, then back down the slalom into the finish garage. Pretty straight forward.

The next was another slalom kinda like this

was a bit more interesting but still plenty of chances for sliding.

From then on it got interesting. I can't remember them all now, but there was a bit more thinking invovlved. One test involved lots of left turns, which led to a lot of petrol spilling out the filler tube. Like this but no right turns.

I don't have any times or placings yet, they will be worked out in the next day or so. I think bazz was about mid field, while i was mid bottom :p

As for the car, it went beautifully. The suspension let it down a bit (so did i though!!) but other than that, it was all good. Quite a bit of weight has been stripped out of it, and at a guess it would be around the 1 tonne mark or lower. This made it easy to throw around, and it easily spins the wheels in second, even at speed. The engine didn't miss a beat, and the transmission and diff still work like they are meant to. The rear bumper almost fell off, not from a hit, but from too much rust.

I have some pictures and video, but they are on the camera still. I'll post them up sometime after we've had a look a them on the TV.

What a fun day!! like Adam said I haven't driven a V6 single spinner for a little while so it took about 10 seconds to get used to it again!!! Was a challenge to get the car to turn a few times but the handbrake worked a treat a few times. Even managed to get some nice sweeping slides going with the boot into it. Tyre wear shows just how much we had the thing sliding.

Didn't miss a beat all day besides the petrol leaking out the filler but that will be fixed very soon!!

Bloody good fun.

Sorry should have clarified, I owned a v6 before so my comment about driving a 6 wasn't quite correct!! It was a mixup between the two!

It's still an inline in the VH.

My mum had a 2.85 5 speed from new. She only just traded up to a VS.

Have you set it up a cold air intake ( remove headlamps ) ;) .

a vs replaced the vh for daily duties.

i suppose the gaping holes in the front would act as a cold air intake, as well as a hot dust intake too.

camera work is a little dodgy, and i can't work out how to edit mov files, but it isn't too bad.

one of my worst times of the day, but some silly sliding and cone hitting action. i was about 20seconds slower than everyone else on that one.

haha, wicked Adam :D Love the sound, very beasty. Some nice circle work there. Were you just stamping on the accelerator or those few times the revs shot up because of the auto?

vh-holden
15-06-2006, 09:56 AM
The sound is interesting. We were watching the video on monday night, and there is a huge difference in sound between idle and not idling (what ever that is called)

I have some better circle work on the video camera, but it wasnt' in competition.
