I dont doubt the performance of a OTRCAI but the price is ridiculous. $500 for a bit of plastic? The SS Inductions is even worse, $500+ and it doesnt even work well.
I may ask Richard Branson to release his own OTRCAI at $200 to keep the air fair.
What are the general prices for a OTRCAI? What advantage would it have over the MONARO CAI and GTS Mafpipe?

Economy of scale.
If like Holden you set up production for say 20,000 units, you will have set up and production costs.
If you are likely to only sell 200 units, the same set up cost exist and if out sourcing production you will not get as good a deal on a smaller run.
Agreed that the end relsult is either plastic or fibreglass and looks like it is over priced. When you take into account that someone had to design, test, manufacture, package, advertise and distribute the product the cost is not so hard to understand.

The moulds cost anything up to 20-30k to setup. The PT units easily outsell the supply.

go with the polished alloy, you can pick them up for about $600 with a K&N filter.......

You reckon 3/10ths down the quarter mile with an OTRCAI over the gts mafpipe/monaro CAI mod??
Would anyone bet their nuts on it?
I dont wanna spent $500 based upon someones hunch

With respect mate, these blokes have PROVEN its effectiveness with PLENTY of testing down the 1/4.
You may wish to pick your mark with a little more knowledge if you choose to question or criticise.

if u put 2 cars beside each other with the same mods ,the one with the otrcai would win, speaking from experience ,i fitted one to my ute and the throttle response and the seat of the pants feel is definatly noticable, shits on the maff pipe and 2 hole mod, easily one of the best buck mods ive done.

is it nessesary to get the tune touched up after fitting an OTR?
Or will it adjust itself?

An easy 3/10ths.

I would get my tune touched up if it was me. Also these things do seem pretty expensive for a bit of plastic etc but i think they are one of the best mods you can do, and for the gains you get are excellent bang for bucks

One of the more interesting things I've noticed at Willowbank at the couple of short sessions I've been to:
The amount of borrowing of otr's---it's like an addict looking for his next fix

Yes :moon:
You really should be in school rather than trying to pick arguments you can't win, with people who have more experience than you'll ever have :fewl:
I'll stick my neck out here and say that $500 seems a tad high. I understand the economies of scale argument.
If you could count on there being a big market for the item, I guess you could buy one and send it to China to get a couple of thousand or more produced?
Failing that, I wonder how hard it would be to fabricate one from aluminium.
Or perhaps Knock up a cardboard pattern and get your local surf board factory or fibreglass boat shop to use this to produce a fibreglass item for you?

i understand that it seems hard to see where your $500 is going ... even though people explain it in the end your getting abit of plastic
Ok fair enough
BUT look at the gains... both 1/4 mile and dyno results (even though dyno doesnt show the full potential of these things on the road!)
the design itself is so simple and so easily explains how this is much beter than any other intake setup
so in terms of bang for back ... this is up there
i mean some of us spend more on a catback (800-1000) yet get about the same if not less results ??? correct me if im wrong
but for 500 it seems to be worth it
coupled with a mafless tune (mail order if need be) and you got yourself abit of roadgoing rocket

They charge $500 because they can I mean really $2000 for a full mafless tune and OTR .
4 hours labour maybe $300 in parts = $425 per hour Crickey I am in the wrong game.
Flame suit being fitted as we speak........

there is another thread talking bout the prices of tunes and there worth ... dont intend on bringing it up again ... but in the end they charge what they can and what people are willing to pay for in the end what are prooven and awesome products ... no trail and error around here

Hi Guys I 2 Had No idea about what cai to purchase 4 my VY 5.7 after 8mths looking. 1. On this site 2. mags 3.retail outlets 4. dealers because of my warrenty. a few questions if u dont mind is with the otr cai the surface area of the otr filter is smaller than a k&n for a std box? also have heard of water getting to the t/b - was told the amount of water is nothing to worry about but i travel 800kms a week some times in very heavy down pours so i'm thinking when behind a truck or car what about the water thrown up with more force? in saying that i have also noticed that some makers of these otr's now have stickers stating 4 off road use only? another thing otr's need maffless tunes so the cost is'nt $500 or some places $400 it's plus the tune $900. my dealer said a tune will void my warrenty. SO PLEASE HELP I'M CONFUSED!! and i still dont have a cai.

Some do.....others more inlightned offer tunes pre-delivery......hunt around.........there's more than one Holden Dealer in Brisbane..... start at Springwood
When my old OTR broke I went back to the ol GTS pipe and airbox with monaro cai for a couple of months. Exhaust stopped overrunning, felt a little flatter, and lost no less than 3 mph at the drags when I headed out there for a winter blast (yes joe you spanked me fair n square:lol: ). Returned to the drags the following week and regained my mph (previous week could not better 112 mph and that was perfect night for racing with temps in the very low teens and minus RA) ran 114.9 - 116 max mph with poorer conditions (didnt get below 16 ambient and still high RA). If I had not of broken a drive shaft that night I would of run my first 11 guaranteed. She was getting there !!! Is it money well spent?? Well I think so. Not many mods for that money will gain you mph (read horsepower) or et. Been there tried that over the past 4 years of having the car. Also, how quickly you can clean the filter/service the airbox with one of these type of systems in place. FOR ME I believe they are a good investment. Each to their own though.:yup:
