View Full Version : Bend Over and pucker up - It's Big Daddy

A SPEED camera that scans four lanes of traffic at once is under consideration for Victorian roads.
The super spy, dubbed The Daddy, has four lenses and two flashes for total road coverage.
Existing cameras typically have only one lens and leave some lanes uncovered, so some drivers escape fines.
The new device's memory can store 60,000 images and sends them by broadband link to officials, speeding up fines.
Special lights take infra-red close-ups of drivers' faces so they can't claim someone else was behind the wheel.
A fourth lens takes video footage for back-up evidence.
The Multi Camera System, made by Dutch company Gatsometer, comes mounted on a pole with giant spikes to deter vandals.
The Australian distributor, Aspect Traffic, confirmed yesterday it had submitted the machine to Victorian authorities for approval and expected to get it within months.
Aspect Traffic already supplies other speed cameras and recently won the contract to supply 21 overhead cameras for the Western Ring Road.
Managing director Stephen Gateley said he had signed a contract to supply three of the monster Multi Camera Systems to another state, and expected the rest to follow.
"A lot of cameras can't see across to the fourth lane, so speeding drivers get away with it," Mr Gateley said.
He said the new device was more democratic, as it was unfair some errant drivers got away with speeding just because of a lane choice.
The cameras are believed to cost more than $100,000 each, but collect much more revenue than conventional cameras. They can be set to either face or follow traffic.
I thought that speed cameras (in NSW at least) cannot take photos of faces as it contravenes the privacy legislation?

If they really cared about the road toll, why do they always put cameras in high-volume traffic areas that have little or no accident record. EG: the western ring road with brand new four lanes.
If they continue to flood the state with these cash cows at least put it in high accident areas. thats what Pi#$%@s me off!

In the UK they have a mob that likes taking "big daddy" to a BBQ, or rather the BBQ to big daddy (and his other Gatso cousins). Burning tyres chucked on em etc.
See article: http://gadgets.qj.net/The-Motorist-s-Revenge-Vandalized-Gatsos/pg/49/aid/53228

Gotta laugh, now they need security cameras to look after the speed cameras. Soon they'll need security cameras to look after the security cameras to look after the speed cameras. And in the end they will have to have a pair of cops to supervise the whole lot - gee maybe it would be cheaper and more effective to have those guys on the road or manning a radar/laser gun...........

nope, may have been true at one time, but not anymore (or it was an urban myth all along)

excellent work.. burn the lot of the b@stards.
Problem is - no doubt we are paying for teh replacements.
I have often thought of doing the same thing..... one night 50 cameras.. ahh to live the dream!

Nup, that's a big myth.
There's a speed camera that pings motorists face-on ONLY at the bottom of the F6, opposite Wollongong Uni.
Edit: I've had a million and one people debate this with me...and I guarantee you it only pings people head-on (no, I haven't been done by it :p).

Someone has shot the cameras on Geelong road a few times...
It was sneaky in Victoria how all of a sudden our rego stickers you stick on the windscreens now have the number plate printed huge on them...
I wonder some people worked out why they were still being fined even though they took their front number plates off... ;)
(and his other Gatso cousins)
Haha...Gatso. Confused the heck out of me when I first installed my SatNav (Destinator/Map Monkey), and it told me "Warning, a Gatso has been detected!"

Sounds like shooting the cameras as we drive past will be a little more difficult. Looks like we need a better mousetrap!

It's good for up to 4500 rounds per minute, so it should be able to whip 4 cameras before they go Japanese tourist on your pride and joy.

hahah Nobby :D
Jesus - 100k for a camera. All this to try to "stop speeding" and "save lives". Hate to sound like a broken record - but when are they going to design something a little better to catch drunk drivers that cause alot of fatalitites? Not to mention - take their licences rather than a 6 month slap on the wrist and at the same time, increase the fines so it really does hurt their hip pockets when they get caught.
Bah - I hate cameras. I want my Happy Meal.

I lived in Sydney most of my life and moved to Melbourne about 2 years ago.
The way the two states use speed cameras is totally different.
In Sydney they have huge signs before speed cameras stating "24 hour camera in use", you can't miss it. Melbourne doesn't use these signs. My first few months in Melbourne I received 3 speeding fines. They all turned up one week in the mail, they were all from the same camera, doing 65 and 66 in a 60 zone. I was trying to get through the lights before they changed. If they had of sent the first fine straight away there is no way I would have incurred the other two fines. I had no idea that red light cameras in Melbourne were also speed cameras and I expected speed cameras to have signs like Sydney.
I'm not making excuses, I did they crime and paid the fine.
The difference between the two states is that Sydney uses speed cameras in black spots to slow people down and save lives whilst Melbourne uses speed cameras to generate money.
I was driving my Lancer back then, now that I have my Monaro things are a little different. I am quite happy to cruise along in my baby. I no longer feel as though I have to prove myself because now I know I have a car that has the balls to do it.

Come on mate, NSW may tell where the cameras are, but don't fool yourself for one second they've got anything to do with road saftey. Revenue, revenue, revenue, plain and simple.
Looks like we need to send an SOS to Captain Gatso. His team were responsible for destroying dozens of cameras in Great Britain.

Have you seen the cameras on the new Craigieburn Bypass? They seem to face forwards, but they also dont seem to be functioning at the moment.
Donno why they care who is driving the car so long as they make their money

These speed camera's and laws are really becoming pathetic,i think theres gonna come a time where we are not gonna be able to enjoy our rides & resort to driving 3cylinder diahatsu miro's as its gonna get that bad that if you "fart" u loose ur license, the government is looking for more ways to loot money from us "consumers" and wat better way is there than the "motor" industry as they know hotting up cars is never gonna stop and young fools speeding is not going to either, the legal mafia is growing and john howards leading them, first hooning law's then speed camera's,then fixed speed camera's then car impounding and selling and now face on camera's & expensive fuel......pathetic ....really pathetic.....:flamin:
my question is,are there speed camera's that nab you from front ?
Yes. Bottom of the F6, Wollongong, south-bound outside Wollongong Uni.

Thats not fair! That revenue goes into to paying for all those ads on tv telling you to slow down!
