As far as I know Pacemaker produce a very short length header that bolts up to the standard cats on VY11 and VZ. Has anyone got good or bad comments in relation to how they perform and sound. I have a DF cat back at moment and sound is OK but no deep note.

Are you sure? If you check their online catalogue and go through the selection process you end up at http://www.pacemaker.com.au/holden_commodore_v8_gen3_6ltr_ls2_vt-vz.html and all the ones listed there require say "VY Series II and VZ require Oxy Sensor Wiring Loom Extensions" meaning they don't keep the cats/O2 sensors in the original positions. I interpret that as meaning they are not shortie extractors like you are after.

FWIW I have HM extractors on mine with a DF twin 2.5" system. When the extractors first went on it virtually sounded no different but over time developed quite a decent, deep note. From what I have read I gather the HMs may not give quite the same power as DF or other really good extractors but they are not as expensive either.

your other option besides the HM ones are the CSV ones ... im getting those in about a week hope they sound good!!
Wonky i get a lil worried when i read about you saying that at first there was virtually no sound difference, but then again the other bloke wit the GTS said it sounded unreal so hmmm lets just hope i get a decent note or the power increase beta b worth it !! LoL

From what I've heard the CSV ones are probably better than the HM ones. Apparently it's not that uncommon for them to take a while to sound better. Someone else in another thread only a day or two back said the same thing and said it needed them to carbon up to sound better. Don't know if that is correct but sounds reasonable. I am very happy with the sound now - sounds very grunty to me at WOT.

SOTP I didn't really notice any initial additional power but now it definitely feels better (motor now done 8,000km so loosening up which may explain some of it). Want to get it dynoed again soon to see..........

yeh ive been told by quite a few people about the carbon build up after a while ... which i did notice with my catback it seems to have gotten a little deeper now and abit louder to i would say ... so i would assume extractors would take a little time to settle in
i just hope csv have a dyno to check my before/after but im not expecting all that much from the headers ... from what ive read the gains arent that massive in general but oh well mainly for the sound and a boost in power wont hurt i guess

Ask them for a b4 and after power run. They will make some gain but only small. Tie them in with a mafless tune and the results will be a whole heap better.
I would recomend a Di Fillipo system they sound great and make good gains.

Thanks for all the feedback guys, I have since done a little more reserach and first of all found that Pacemaker do not make the shorties ( Sorry for the bum stear). However HM make and extra shorty which still use the skinny 2 inch small piece of pipe going to the standard cats, which I think is not ideal. Genie and CSV make a slightly longer version that eliminates the small pipe (one with O2 sensor) and joins up with the cat but this requries cutting the end of the cat. Should provide more power but is messy. I have read a post where they open up each end of the cat to 2.5 inch and also replace the pipe going to the cat back with mandrel bent 2.5 inch. Sounds like the way to go except for the fiddling around and extra costs.
If anyone has tried this let us know how it performed.

Sureflo also do a shorty. I have them. Like the CSV system they have no header to cat pipe and they open up the original cats You also need a new pipe from the back of the cat to where the 'cat back' flanges are. Give em a ring.

Thanks Exploder, so how do they sound and perform? And is you don't mind telling how much did it cost all up.

Sounds fine. I have a wagon which have a big glassed in echo chamber above the rear muffler so I went for a quiet system, its not what most people here are after. Having said that Sureflo can pretty much make a full system sound however you want. The prices are all listed in a sticky in the Sureflo sponsor area, various options such as size, ceramic coating etc.

There's a godd thread about this under sureflo's section of the forum, worth the read about all the options you have with these headers

The section from Sureflow made great reading and they really do contibute to this forum. Shame though I couldn't find any dyno results for the LS1 with these headers.

Just a thought however on how people seem determined to leave the cats up near the motor to maintain emmision requirements, when HSV get away with having their VY11 with cats under the car?
