View Full Version : How do I get out of paint protection?

Today I put a deposit on a SVZ Commodore. Can't wait to get it!

However, I felt pressured and rushed when I agreed to get the paint protection for an extra $1000+ (around 1500 I think).

I soon realised this was a waste of my money and felt a little ripped off since I've learnt this type of stuff is already included on new cars etc....

Can anyone offer advise on how I might "change my mind" on getting this option?

Go back to the dealer, speak to the salesperson you dealt with, and tell them to remove it from the contract. Wait and watch him delete the option and sign next to it. Simple.
The supposed "paint protection" isn't applied until after the car arrives at the dealer, so it shouldn't be an issue not to do it.

Ring the dealership and say "changed my mind, I don't want it" ... if you want a story to go with it just tell them your brother is a detailer and he said he will look after the car for you.

Personally I just tell them I'm not interested.

Enjoy the new car !!!

I'd just say you dont want it. Their not going to risk the sale just for measly paint protection. As for $1500 I dunno what their throwing at it, normally they try to sell it for around $500.

And yes, the "paint protection" is applied once the car arrives at pre delivery.

$1500!! Did she have nice boobs? You must have been very distracted when she was selling that. Normally its $700-100 and worth $50. Just ring them and tell them you got it aftermarket for $300 (A premuim polish using Zymol/Swissol is as good if not better than the PP crap).

Is there something optional you'd like that costs $1500 - maybe like wheels or some other HBD option? Usually they don't care if you exchange for something else of like value.

Unfortunately the margin on new vehicles is so slim dealers and salesmen get a lot of their commission selling you aftermarket stuff. If the paint protection is done properly and maintained it will not look 'bad'. But won't do anything to avoid corrosion.

But yes, you need to do it ASAP, or the car will be sitting there delivered with paint protection and you have signed for it.

Fantastic, thanks for the advice guys. Might have to participate in this forum more often.

Now all I need to do is work out what to do with my beloved good condition Manual VL Commodore.

Hi,

Don't they charge like wounded bulls for these bulldust add-ons? They tried to flog me paint protection, rust proofing, alarm upgrades and a whole heap of other bulldust including window tinting. The window tinting may be an OK option BUT the dealer's prices was easily DOUBLE what I could get walking in off the street to a reputable tint place.

So what? DON'T BUY ANY OF THE CLAP-TRAP ADD-ONS FROM DEALERS!! They designed to make them rich and US POOR!!

Call them ASAP! Tomorrow as early in the day as you can. If they tell you that they cant remove it from the contract, tell them to cancel the contract! You have a 1 day "cooling off" period with new cars (not sure if you can sign away your rights to that on new cars, but when i bought my SS a couple of weeks back they didnt ask me to), and im sure they'd cancel a 1500 paint protection pack over cancelling the whole order.

PS My method of getting out of the ming bs was to tell the dealer that i didnt need to speak to their aftermarket division, i just wanted the car and it'd be wasting their time anyway, so i didnt even see the chick!

Best of luck!

If you've signed a legally binding contract to purchase, I guess you've bought it

I kinda lied and said I had a contact who would do it for me cheap. She (you called he ming mole) then started up again with the "why? I'm competitive, I can beat their price, you don't want to have bats damaging your car" type crap.

She eventually gave in and removed it from the contract. Yay!

BTW, She had charged me $1500 and said it was a Queensland State of Origin promotional package, half priced down from $3000. For the record, she didn't have great tits.

Is there custom tail lights I can get for the VZ? It's one major thing really taking away from the sexy styling in my opinion.

Good to hear you got it sorted. All you will have to do now is give it a good polish and regular cleaning should maintain that fresh shinny new paint look.
Good luck with your new ride.

Ah yes, the old profit-enhancer opportunities - guts the deal to get the business then get aftermarket to slug them and bring back the gross profit.

Most of these well-educated guys are right - ring and cancel the aftermarket stuff. Your salesman won't lose a deal for the loss of some snake oil packs.

I once had a desk close to an aftermarket girl, and the crap that came out of her mouth to sell stuff made my toes curl - the old 'its like 50 plus sunscreen for your car' dribble!! Puh-lease...

The easiest way to get out of it, is to ask for written proof from the manufacturer that the aftermarket crap is ok to use on their products, won't void their warranty and will be handles through service dealers if a problem arises with it (how many service advisors recoil with horror when you mention a problem with your electronic rust-proofer or bubbles in your tint?).

Cheers

.

margin on new vehicles slim?? your joking right?? at least 20% for the dealer. I got 21% discount on my car and am betting the dealer still made a dollar or two.

I still cant believe they charge this much for it.. $60 a bottle, half an hour application time...

Polish your car every week and it will work better. Don't get me wrong, paint protection is probably the best offered out of the ming protection (let's face it, its pretty good at covering up dodgy detailing jobs done by myself :hide: ) gives a good shine, but I wouldnt even think about paying for it.
