the standard gear knob will fit a HSV short shift shaft??
Was gonna grab a nice leather knob to suit until I was quoted $240 for one.... OUCH-O-RAMA !!!
Funny because a colour stiched leather boot is only $55 and there'd be triple the amount of leather in that compared to the knob.

Boot is cheaper because it doesnt have HSV stamped on it, HSV leather nobs for manuals are retailing at $325ish.

I thought that the SS and HSV versions were identical (apart from the length if you choose the shortened version) ?
Here is one (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/HOLDEN-GENUINE-VY-VZ-6-SPEED-BLACK-LEATHER-GEAR-KNOB_W0QQitemZ4644607934QQcategoryZ102361QQrdZ1QQc mdZViewItem) off eBay.

I have a shortened version shifter in my SS and still have the standard shifter (leather boot and silver / leather 6spd knob).
They go for around $70 on eBay for standard ones. Lot's of people with Series 1 SS's and also Series 1 and 2 SV8's buy the Series 2 standard shifters as an upgrade with handbrake in silver finish. At that price just change over the whole boot / knob setup.

The reason I asked about the standard gear knob and the HSV short shifter was because... all the pics I've seen of the HSV shifter show it as a metal shaft of one size diameter from the top (where the knob sits) to the bottom where the shaft connects to the section where it bolts (2 bolts) to the selector.
On my VY shifter, I can feel (thru the boot) that the shaft is of a narrower diameter up the top where the knob connects. Also the knob can twist about a bit, as tho it's mounted on a rubber stem??

I can assure you that the shafts are identical on the same models of HSV and Holden...
Yes, the removable section of the shaft is actually 2 pieces which have been joined with a rubber joiner, which is supposed to reduce some of the NVH levels before they get to the knob...
However, some do not like the joiner as it removes some of the feel and directness of the shift... Personal choice really.

$240 for a leather knob INCLUDES the standard Holden shaft as well, hence the price. You can't buy just the leather "knob" from a dealer.

Go ebay...
I got a shorter shifter for my SS for $80. The guy is a tool maker and makes them up. I can highly recommend him. My original gear knob fit straight on.

SS standard leather and alloy gear knobs come with levers, and everyone gets them off sponsor NVU.

Well, this arvo I got my HSV short shifter (thanx KPWISHN), and went about removing the standard shaft, knob and boot setup.
The standard knob didn't take too much effort to remove from the shaft and has been "glued" to the shorter HSV shaft.
All up, the job took about 30 mins. Looks and feels much much better !!! :D
