Whilst I always use BP Ultimate from the same (expensive, hi-volume) station, I've found that my car has suddenly begun pinging in the last month or two. Anyone else? A mate reckons that BP told him that they have a "summer" and "winter" brew, with a higher octane summer brew to combat the heat and consequent pre-ignition problems...

You heard the facts right mate, the summer and winter brew is different actually I had the same thing mate, got PT to take some timing out. But yeah winter the octane is a lot less than summer... It annoys me how they just change it, yet we still pay the same price... You think you pay top $$$ for fuel you get what you pay for...

Not BP @ Kallangur?

They can't even keep the same price differences! One day its 10c more than unleaded, next day its 12c more, next its 15c more

Nah..BP Milton Rd just near Lang Park...expensive, but high volume so the fuel's always fresh, and only 1 minute from work

I just stick to using 95.
Can't pick any differance between 95 and 98.
Still, it's even better if you get your injectors cleaned every 20,000 k.

Try a mileage test. I've tested Ultimate, BP 95, and the E10 Fuel from Liberty and found that BP Ultimate (or any 98 octane premium fuel) gives me better mileage. With the E10 fuel I was getting 50kms less per tank. That more than made up for the cost savings not to mention the peace of mind of using premium fuel over a blend. The 95 octane fuel was still 20kms (approx) per tank less than 98 octane.

Yep mine is pinging as well. Thought BP were having a few bad batches go around but I guess your explanation sums it up.

How do you find the fuel from there? I was wondering what it was like as I'm a bit worried about the volume of 98, and hence the quality, they sell at the BP near me on Deception Bay Road.

Can't say I've noticed any pinging yet. Haven't been doing much WOT lately as I always seem to be in traffic or it's raining. For those of you who have noticed it, does it come on pretty easily or only when really labouring the engine?

I've been having the same problem with pinging lately :hmmm: Thinking what the f##k, especially after never having this problem before with the same bp fuel from the same servo. :(

I only notice mine on light throttle between 1500 - 2000rpm, but since I'm as deaf as post it may be further up as well. Since I had to go to Mt Tamborine a couple of times this week I added a bottle of Octane boost to be sure.... Ehh...?? Wha'd ya say?..Speak up...:1peek:

seldo that is exactly the same rev range that I experience pinging at as well. It's when I am cruising on the highway that I notice it. The increase in compression I am running would not be helping either.

Use it constantly, never had an issue here. I tried the Max from United not as responsive at BP Ultimate but no pinging and three cents cheaper.

What does the pinging sound like? I am sure I don't have it, I read a thread saying it sounds like marbles in a jar rattling around? If so my engine is not pinging :D

Yeah, i fill up at the same servo every week with bp ultimate haven't had a problem with pinging but the car is not as responsive as it usually is, so i might drop back to 95 in winter and 98 in summer if that makes any sense. By the way do they drop octane on 95 aswell? . Cheers Andy

I have found the new Caltex 98 to be pretty good. Try that and see what you think.
