View Full Version : No more Shell 95RON?

After having the 'out of service' tags on the PULP95 pumps at my local Shell (Laverton, Vic), a drive-thru last night revealed all have been replaced by Optimax Extreme pumps, making Optimax (yuk) the least expensive PULP.

The Fuel Finder on Shell's website still identifies this servo (and others locally) as having 95RON despite the fact that I have personally seen that they don't. This irks me as I had found Shell 95 to be the best balance for my driving style/tuning/wallet and, with the 4c Coles discount, was affordable for the quality, IMHO.

Does anyone know if this is a deliberate move by Shell to phase out 95 and push Optimax? Will Optimax become better or cheaper, given the presence of Optimax Extreme? Do other vendors (Shell/Non Shell) still stock 95 RON?

Shell like all the other brands shares output from different refineries in Oz. So for instance Shell might provide PULP in one state to its' competitors, who supply Shell in states where there is no Shell refinery.

If Shell is doing away with 95RON so will some of those competitors, likely. However, BP, Caltex, Ampol all had 95RON - BP like Shell sold 95 and 98.

Optimax due to it's density seems to suit some cars. Others it makes run like crap.

Pulled into the Shell at Point Cook / Altona and had the same thing - no 95. Asked why and they said changed to 100 but other Shells still had the 95.

Seems to be a ploy to increase sales on Shell Extreme but being 14c above regular they can stick it.

Is anyone using Shell extreme as their usual fuel?

a little off topic but does anyone know, according to manufacturer's claims how much ethanol is in most 98 octane fuels ? and for Shell 100 octane?

Thanks

None, unless it says so specifically. ie ultimate = 0%

optimax extreem is 5% ethanol
optimax regular is 0% ethanol

Shell 95 is staying at selected Coles Express outlets, just go to a bigger outlet if you can't find it at the smaller outlets.

I called 7 - 11 Head Office in Melbourne. They told me that their fuel in Sydney is Shell 95 RON.

I thought I read somewhere that in the next year of so, 91 octane is being phased out, to be replaced by a slightly higher octane "base" fuel. May be tied in to that....?
Anyway, what really is the purpose of having 95, 98, and 100 octane "premium" unleaded? I can see why one of them might be going....

Here in Bris, the Matilda servos use 95 Shell.

Shell are gouging as much as they can with Optimax X with 5% ethanol it should be cheaper given the different excise but oh no they make it more expensive..................................bunch of fat cat wallys

I bought 95 at the Coles Express outlet in Moorabbin (SE Melb) yesterday

I'd be happy for them to phase the 95 out in Adelaide so they can put ANYTHING better in....(note in case you dont know we dont get anything better at Shell)))

Shell will be phasing out optimax and optimax etreme and replacing that with a newer fuel in the near future. Shell 95 is staying in areas where they belive there is a market for it.

Optimax Extreme is going into more outlets. Only a trickle at the moment. Production and supply is limited.

We are not phasing anything out, maybe a name change:deal:
