hey all
was their ever a VZ fuel guage fix? I remember talk about it a while back, the problem being the VZ (possibly VY as well) gets to a quarter of a tank then all of a sudden in a matter of moments drops rapidly before your eyes and towards the end goes from like 120km to empty then rapidly goes down to 70 odd km to empty, then it starts to count down 1km each second, then goes up ...
I remember someone mentioning a possible software fix but I dunno the specifics. Does anyone know if there was ever a fix brought out?

Hey mate,
I had this problem with my new thunder. Got the fuel gauge re calibrated at first service. Fixed the problem to an extent but I still don't trust the gauge specially when it's on 1/4 of a tank and it only takes 45L to fill with a 70L tank!

Had it done ages ago on mine (late last year from memory). Car was going in for a tune/edit the next day and apparently the fix involves lots of modules including BCM and ECM so thought it best to get it done before the edit so I didn't have to have it mess up the edit.
It is quite good now - still marginally favours the first half of the tank i.e. goes a long way before it reads half a tank and then comes down quicker on the second half but I now trust it implicitly to have approx 10 litres left when it gets to 0km on distance to empty which is apparently what they are designed to do.
I never actually run it that low (usually about 60 - 80km) but yesterday I was late for a meeting and couldn't stop to fill until I got down to 30km to go and based on how much it took to fill it I worked out it would have taken almost exactly 65 litres if I had gone another 30km. Have similarly worked out much the same previously.
It seems to me (and makes logical sense from a driving perspective) that distance to empty is based on some combination of average and instantaneous consumption. When I get down low (which is the only time I ever watch distance to empty) if I am driving in heavy traffic the distance to empty figure will drop rapidly as it has to assume (not knowing anything different) that you will be in such heavy traffic for the rest of your trip. Once you get onto the open road again where instantaneous fuel consumption is much better you will find the distance to empty figure will actually increase or stay about the same even though you are clocking up the kms.
That could explain a little of the fluctuation some people notice but I wouldn't want it any other way. However, there are obviously some gauges out there that have serious problems........
