View Full Version : US Lawyers on the Piston Slap & Warranty Band Wagon??
Hi all,
I'm picking up and running with a bit of info from C5LS1 who provided an interesting URL. I hope that's OK C5LS1.
Sifting through the data on this site may be somewhat useful, particularly if you're about to make a warranty claim.
And quoting C5LS1:
You need to go to http://www.pistonslap.com/ there you will learn about The General Motors Design Floor in LS1's Between 97 and 2002 i Believe . and other affected engines
I'm entering this as a separate thread as the emphasis on the warranty aspect may be of use to some.

Thing is that piston slap has been a thing invented at the same time as a piston engine really.
Some are just louder than others.

Could piston slap be remedied by putting another set of rings around the skirt of the piston? Obviously it would add to weight as the skirt woul dneed to be thicker but I think it would fix the problem. Although I'm not even sure what it sounds like.
I have what I thought to be lifter noise at start up but slap ?

Alot of gen III's seem to have a bit fo valve train noise until the oil has fully circulated .. common occurance i think.. from the cars I've heard..

all engines have valve train noise on startup. Even my gf's mazda 1.8L sounds slighly rattly/diesely on cold starts. So did my old 5ltr, and so does the ls1.
The info on the web site is saying something different to what you guys are talking about. Did you read their comments on select build and net build? If what they are saying is correct, I would be more than a bit concerned.
If what they are saying was true with the early Gen III's (and I don't know one way or the other), I doubt that it would apply to the VXII Gen III's and later - didn't GM fit tighter teflon coated pistons to overcome the problem?
I've also heard that VYII Gen III's and later received different conrod gudeons - is this true? If it is, it seems to point to other than biggish bores and smallish pistons.
I've also heard that a torque plate hone helps overcome the problem. This rumour seems to be based on a belief that the bores distort slightly when the cylinder heads are torqued down. Any thoughts on this one?
My 2003 VYI seems to be running OK at the moment so whatever mods were made at the VXII stage seem to be working for me.
