View Full Version : Remaining Coupes Selling Slowly!

I've been quite suprised that with Coupe production now finished, in other words "NO MORE", that there are still a few CV8Zs around, & also that the remaining HSV GTOs do not appear to be exactly "flying out the door"! This is, of course, in spite of the fact that there will not be another Coupe. I don't believe there'll ever be another one, but that's another story.
Dacious has already said that with approx 3200 VZ Monaros made, Holden have done quite well, & so they have, but I would have thought that as everyone now knows they're finished, any remaining units would be very quickly snapped up. It's not the case with GTOs either, even with the added attraction of 6 litres of LS2! American GTO sales are also down 20% on last year. My thoughts were that with no replacement, all remaining Coupes would sell quickly, but this is not the case. So, Holden were quite possibly right when they said the CV8 would only be good for 3-4 years.
Cheers, Pickles.

Yeah, I've seen that car, I think it was an '05 build, but it's ripper value at that price--about $12k discount on RRP. Actually it's only about $8k more than some people paid for a CV8Z!
Cheers, Pickles.

Saw a brand new GTO sitting ontop of a container at a Holden dealer on Victoria Rd tonight about an hour ago. I think it said $69,990

June 06 build- $72k driveaway--that is an unbelievable deal--$12k discount-as I've said, I can't understand why these things aren't selling--after all you won't be able to get one in VE will you!!
Cheers, Pickles.

Just went past the HSV dealer up here and they got 3 VZ GTO's in stock.:yup:
If there are big discounts on limited edition models that would ordinarily hold their resale value better than most, and if these models are shifting slowly . . . . I wonder how well the VE will move out the doors?
As some in the industry have been saying, there's a marked down-turn in the large car segment. Mitsubishi have done the right thing by discounting the 380. That amounts to a sharing the pain of large car depreciation with their customers. Maybe Holden and Ford will be forced down this path too??
The customer has what the manufacturers want ($) and people are voting with their feet right now. It will be interesting to see how the market responds to the VE.
Ford is said to waiting till the release of the VE until it finalises it's 2008 BF replacement. You need a crystal ball to know which way to jump, but I suspect that there will be an onging trend towards more economical cars.
Maybe we need to lobby the government to introduce cars that run on anything between 100% ethanol to 100% petrol? Ethanol fueled cars may be a way to keep V8's on our roads?

In todays West Australian Motoring section there is a GTO test/article and it says there are only about 40 left in WA.... perhaps he was referring to all current HSVs as 40 seems way to high for GTO only. There may be 40 left Australia wide???
There are only 4 HSV dealers in WA (3 metro & 1 country) so that would mean each dealer had about 10 in stock. Otherwise they are sitting in a holding yard somewhere.

Any 2-door coupe has a naturally-limited market. LS2 or no, the shape has been around since 2001. I bet BMW is selling a fraction of the M3s they did in the first year. Market is very fashion conscious.
Holden alway said from day one - 5,000 S1s, 2500 SIIs and 1250 SIIIs, that's how coupes sell. It was 4,400 ( production delays) 3200 and 2200 so Holden was astute. They made their development budget back on sales of a specualtive car which could have bombed and cost $200M to develop and tool for - wonder how much Adventra cost? They did it right, marketed it right and on any analysis it is a success. Plus they've achieved the rare combination of a high buy price, desirability and resale maintenance.
As they were still selling, and had to update, the GTO it made sense to piggyback VZ, although never intended. Upgrading the hardware and styling countered the retrograde fuel tank/boot move which if the body had remained unchanged would have made it an orphan.
With the GTO it's harder - an LS2 is not that much quicker on paper than a 285 LS1, looks the same, but lost half it's boot and gained weight and a higher CoG. Plus, the biggest HSV sellers are Clubsports and Utes - because the buyers tend to be family blokes or tradies who still want a hotrod. It's 40% dearer than a CV8 which in VZ could be considered a competitor due to looks and close performance for less bux. Most Monaro buyers want the look and V8 and can't make use of the brakes or suspension on the GTO. Difference between a Clubby and SS or SS Ute and Maloo is probably dynamically bigger, but price diff. relatively smaller.
Plus HSV has been selling a lot of coupes to England so didn't need to move them here, really. Remember, even at the price, HSV probably makes less on a GTO than a Clubby, because of the buy price of the core vehicle - GTO is still Calais inside compared to Berlina for the Clubby and it's a dearer shell to build for Holden.

As far as I have seen there is none here so I can narrow it down to 3 metro dealers for you :)

nice red VZ Monaro still waiting for a new owner at Barloworld Holden.in Melb. .. Also if you do a search on demo / near new cars in stock on car sales for HSV check out how many HSV coupes and sedans are listed... Still plenty around.. Will the VE affect coupe prices?
