Apologies if this is old news, but couldn't find anything on it.
Saw an article in the local commy rag the other day where the police are using some sort of OCR to read numberplates as cars travel along.
If you are driving an unregistered car they will then pull you and book you.
Apparently, there is only one of these things in NSW.
Also if you are driving a car that has been out of rego for a while they will hit you for back road tax as well as the usual fine.
In 4 days it found 42 cars out of rego albeit on a busy road.
Also working in an affluent area.
I don't condone driving unregistered or uninsured vehicles under any circumstances, esp as I was a victim of an unregistered driver umpteen years back but thought I would post this in case anyone is "one day out of reg and going to the mechanics"
Cheers.
This technology has been around in Oz for a while now -many states are using it in a limited or pilot status - NSW safetycam has been around for many years providing lots of functionality including "out of rego".

Yep knew the technology was around, even knew they tested the truckies safety-cam once reading sedan number plates on the F3,
But never known of them to act on the information.
Out of interest, on the F3 test one in 10 cars were out of rego on the central coast.
Yeah the NSW safety-cam is a decent system - my info is that it is capable (and potentially does) capture rego plates from every vehicle not just trucks.
I agree the actual acting on the information is a bit hit and miss - which is a bit disconcerting given that at any time, at least in qld, there are 100,000 vehicles without valid rego potentially travelling on the roads.
Hi all,
You can bet your boots that the gov't is pee'd off with those who are able to sail past speed cameras without giving a stuff about receiving fines.
The other obvious issue is the avoidance of Motorwat charges. There's no point in the government working hand-in-hand with the consortiums to stitch us up for road taxes AND road tolls if wise guys with false plates are able to duck and weave around $20 - $30 worth of tolls every week.
Legalised duckery and weavery at official levels is the only kind that is allowable. The *&#$@ in the NSW gov't that set up some of the recent Motorway deals slugged the consortiums millions up front. It's bad enough that we have to pay tolls on roads that our governments should build for us using our tax $. They add insult to injury by slugging the consortiums, forcing the tolls up to even higher levels to recover the up-front tax slugs imposed.

I've seen this in action a few times - they (marked police car) park on the side of the road and it looks like a speed camera type thing, but in a spot where you would not expect to see a speed camera.. they have another car a hundred meters or so down the road pulling people over. People that get done by this thing cop a fine, have to leave their cars and get them towed. It's surprising how many people are driving unregistered cars, they end up with a LOT of cars parked up at the side of the road.
