Hey Everyone,
I just recently purchased (in the last 2 weeks!!) a 2005 VZ SS Manual Ute, with the 6 speed gearbox and has only just clicked over 12,0000kms.
Last night I started to noticed a clunk when changing gears (main down gearing). I first really felt it through the brake pedal, as the clunk vibrated through there. I think this is probably more a diff clunk, can anyone shed some light on it for me? I've also noticed a repetitive slight clicking noise when I'm moving, and both noises are definitely coming from the rear of the ute.
I bought this car through a 2nd hand dealer, so will still be under warranty, but I've read stories about this clunk appearing in a lot of gearboxes (mainly auto) and diffs, and not being a problem but just something that happens.
Any help anyone could give me would be much appreciated. Aside from this, the car's been great to drive.
Thanks
Chris

Thanks Club 819.
Uni joint does sound obvious. Since it is under warranty, I guess it's probably safest to take it to the holden dealership near me.

Driveline clunk in a 6 speed manual is a "feature" not a "fault". This what my local dealer said to me when I complained of the same thing.

My "clunks" come and go.....don't even notice it anymore. My mates ute is the same.
I only really noticed it when I'd just handed over my $$$ - was a little worried as you are. It's like buying an LCD Monitor - some have 'dead pixels' straight out of the box. Others dont.

Yeah I've heard a fair few bad things bout it like that. My only issue that I noticed today (after I turned my music down a bit), is the repetitive clunking noise when I'm moving at any speed. The faster I go, the quicker it becomes (not louder though), so I'm thinking it is to do with the drive shaft. I've got it booked in for Friday anyway, so I will keep all updated once I know what it is.
I'm sorta happy this excessive clunk has happened rather than just a normal clunk, as they may give me the 'feature' explaination as well.
Cheers

Get them to fix it now and investigate the problem as you are still under warranty. It may take them a few times to actually find the problem let alone fix it!!
My driveline has had a 'clunk' for as long as i remember. Having covered nearly 250,000km in my car, i've had a diff replaced (about 15,000km ago) and the transmission rebuilt when I had the clutch replaced (about 25,000ago). The clunk was there before and was there after. The rubber donut in the driveline has been replaced, and all CV's etc... have been replaced with the diff. The result .... still a feature.
I should also mention (as stupid as I will sound) that I was investigating a knock/rattle in the rear end of my car for a good many weeks. Turns out it was actually the towbar gooseneck rocking up and down around the pin. My standard HSV H.Duty towbar doesn't have a fixing bolt in it, only the main pin.
Like I said at the start, I felt stupid once i realised what it was, but for such a small amount of movement that it was getting, the sound really reverbed through the rear of the car - atleast I know the towbar was solidly mounted!

My VY ute has a clunk in the diff but as was said nothing can be done. Had it at a diff place the other day and the splines into the CVs were a little worn but what can you do? Not worth replacing yet, they wont break. Then again if Ive got the stereo off I can here the fuel sloshing around in the tank.
