Saw an ad on the front page of the local paper the other day that is a real worry.

Village Motors at Petrie, QLD have installed a chassis dyno and are offering LS1 Edits, diff gear recalibrations, fuel economy and power tunes, etc ......... :weirdo:

What is the world coming to when genuine Holden dealers have dyno's and want to jump in the tuning game? :p

The prospect of getting a Holden dealer to optimize a tune in your car sounds something akin to getting your local butcher to do cosmetic facial surgery.

You can organise an edit on your new car thru the dealer now. There are dealers in Vic that use a forum sponsor to edit your car.

Oh to be a fly on the wall in the Service Department at Village Motors Petrie next time a warranty claim for an engine is put to Holden:shock: ......not to mention the HSV Dealers will be spewing.....most notably those who dared play the *Edit* game in the past .................still.....all in all, a little *Competition* Willowbank way never went astray.................imho :yup:

at the end of the dya all they are is a mechanical workshop, and they should and would be able to do exactly the same as joe bloggs one man mechanic workshop or a large workshop, there not any different just cause they sell holdens out the front. However it will be interesting as others have pointed out, seeing holdens response to some warrenty claims, but you would be neive if you thought holden had no idea what their dealers get up to.

I was wondering what was going on when I saw Ballarat Holden selling MAF-less tunes for HSV-type cold air intakes ....

That would probably be the obvious opinion, but as you can see here, Ford Forums, WRX forums etc. the after market performance mods is becoming a very large industry with some very big dollars spent. And I'm sure most good tuners are making some real big bucks.

I think its an interesting point, and lets see what happens in the near future.

Is our 'Holden' member of this forum aware of this? Would Holden care to comment? I am interested to know the Holden corporate view on this, as it could affect warranty claims.

I cannot see a problem with this. Once the car is 3 years or 100,000km old it is out of warranty so it can't really be voided by an edit.

I am sure there are many many LS1s sold between 1999 and 7/2003 that might like to take advantage of modified operation for many reasons including the usual "I just wanna go faster".

If I bought my car from a dealership and had them service it and do the mods then I suspect I would have a few more brownie points if/when a problem arose.

N.B. I have had all my servicing and mods (engine & suspension) on my last 4 cars done my the original dealer and have NEVER had a warranty or repair "issue".

If you got mods done by your Holden Dealer why wouldn't they be covered by the Holden warranty ?

I buy my cars new and keep them 2 to 3 years so they are always under new car warranty. It would be good to be able to get mods done without voiding warranty. I'm sure there would be a premium cost to the mods done by the dealer but I suppose you have to weigh up how much you want your factory warranty...:teach:

Its about time there was some competition, though the current crop of tuners have built up a good reputation and should be able to cope well if this is a sign of thhings to come.

However, we all know how dealers treat our cars...like sh!t...so most people would avoid them anyway, if they've got half a brain.

I'll put money on them outsourcing the tuning to an accredited tuner.:yup:

Theres plenty of competition, just look at the debates between them, and the way prices have come down as compared to a couple of yrs ago.

And it isnt competition because they are simply contracting out to those same tuners anyway. No doubt with a decent margin on top.

I got the dealer to do all my mods pre-delivery. Lowered, mags, 3.9 diff, Headers, cats , zorst, Cai, Throttle body, short shifter, and gave me a 6 year / 175 000 km warranty. And got free tint, mats , spats, bonnet protector and weather shields. If you dont ask you wont get. They wouldnt do an edit though.

If they bought their own dyno it doesn't sound like they've taken the smart option that another dealer did and used PT for the pre-delivery "tweaks"

One has to wonder also if their version of an Edit is just flashing a HSV tune into it rather than custom. This would be the safe option.
Admittedly I found the customer service at Petrie to be quite OK (a while back now), but I shudder at the thought of them training apprentices on flashing PCMs - oil changes are one thing, detonating an engine from a bad tune is another.

My guess is they will have a "mail order" style tune for each model variant which they will flash into the car.

The only reason for the dyno will be to do a pre and post dyno graph to give to the customer.

I agree. Ill bet the tuning is conservative or just HSV program uploaded. The last thing they would want is problems with detonation and the like, people coming back claiming they wrecked the vehicle ect would outweigh the profits in the tuning.

Bay City Holden in frankston use a forum sponsor located just around the corner from them, for high performance upgrades, LPG instaltions, and even serving of their spare parts vehicles.

I suspect that most dealers that do it would prefer to not be identified on a public forum. I doubt they do it with Holden's blessing.

(the thought of the pimply faced computer geek at my local dealership being let loose with some tuning software on my car horrifies me!!!!)

Hi

I could just imagine the accessories chick at my local holden dealer offering me the in-house Holden uprgades when I buy my next car:

Would you like a Holden approved engine tune? COST $1999 inc GST (courtesy of G&D) or would you rather our Holden brand Twin Turbo kit? COST $19,999 inc GST (courtesy of Street Tuna)

I will just stick to the factory tinted windows at $799 thanks!

regards,

Richard

Me thinks now that perhaps if anyone would be supply mail order tunes to holden dealers it'd be Mr Walkinshaw Performance

I took my car to petrie because of a shudder in the steering at low speeds. Car was returned 2 hours later, rack tightened all good! Driving out of the driveway there was massive clunking to be heard and car fell into ABS Fault :flamin:

Back to the service desk, straight in on Tech2, in workshop for 15 mins then all fixed... Official explaination.... It was just the brake lines banging on the sway bar? WTF? :argue:

Last time Holden touch my car  :flipoff:

Rejects at Holden service need to learn how to change oil properly before they have a go at tuning!! Wouldn't let them loose on my car, no f@#king way man!!!!

Was recently talking to the (great :) ) sales guy at Berwick who sold me my last 2 cars and he was saying he'd sent cars out for edit/exhaust/extractors/lowered etc pre-delivery.

The Walkinshaw rep on here said that they outsourced their tuning if I remember correctly.

I once picked up a G&D card from the service desk at Booran Holden in Dandenong.

Not new. Been doing this for years in Melbourne pre-delivery with non-HSV outlets. I bet this dealer is not certified HSV or there would be contractual obligations preventing them from doing this. Furthermore, there is no way Holden would back up any warranty claim as a result of this tuning. It would solely be at the expense of the dealer.

Good idea, and Walkinshaw is making inroads along the same lines.

I think people should be careful when dealers tell them that it doesn't void warranty. It depends who you talk to. Some say Yes, some say No and others say only a specific component. I saw an OTRCAI on ebay for sale and a tune. I asked if it voids the warranty. The answer I got was No. I then replied and said that's funny because I had asked Holden the same question a couple of months ago and they told me it did void the warranty. His reply was 'The initial information we had was that it did not void the warranty. I've since asked the question again and found that it does'. If I hadn't sent the reply I would've purchased the OTRCAI and the edit and my warranty would've been void.

With the VX SS i used to own it had a mafless tune and GTS intake tube pretty obvious that is wasnt factory standard. I had a oil drinking problem with it and holden replaced the engine no questions asked.
