I know a guy who has the first series of the new monaros build number 007 that is in storage with less tha 50kms on the clock, is hoping for the value to rise. his ramblings made it sound a good investment, although that was back before the second series and gtos, gts and coupe 4s.

you'll either win or lose, IMO probably lose.

No "probably" about it, IMO cars are pointless as investments, especially new ones. You drive them - they depreciate. You don't - they still depreciate. Even if values do go up eventually, return from property or blue chip shares is much much higher. An 02 Monaro was what, $60K new? In Perth in 2002 you could have bought a unit for $120,000 easily, and the rental income would cover the remaining mortgage interest, rates, strata fees etc. The unit would now be worth close to $300,000 ... :diddy:

In 10 years I think the value will still be going down - maybe in 20 or 30 it will go up again.

My $0.02 worth...

Cheers

One of the bosses at my work just bought an original XY GT HO Phase 3 for $250,000, and has another white one already. If you are in Perth you would have seen the white one in the papers about 12 months ago when it got stolen and found in same condition...

If you can find me a phase 3 gtho for 80,000 ill buy it right now!!, try more like 150-200,000 for one.

A9x go for around the 60 - 70,000 mark now,
l34s, for around 30-40,000 (tho i think it is more now)
xu1's 30,000+
gts monaros, try 50,000+
saw a 186 original monaro in the sunday times acouple of months ago go for 18,000
original hemi cudas - 400,000 us plus, a orig 426 challenger went for 4,000,000 at auction last year.............

looks like ill never be able to afford one of these beautys anytime in this lifetime.

the new monaro isnt a good idea at the moment. The first series was supposed to be a limited run, then it morphed into the VY and VZish series, then it morphed into the CV8Z which is the last of its kind, but it'll be back on the VE platform after theyve tweaked the new chassis to 2 doors.

IMO cars are there to be driven and enjoyed, not couped up in a garage thats what 1:18 scale model cars are for!

Classic example is my bosses Cobra, original condition literally including dents and scratches, no touchup or modifications, got it many many many years ago as a trade in when they owned a Ford dealership. Low original miles. It sits hidden away under covers somewhere collecting dust BUT its also acctually driven on occasions, over Christmas holidays, for Ford classic shows, even entered in road rallys. It'd be worth something to someone after an untouched original Cobra but to the boss its the history and memories behind it, how he got it and what its done in its lifetime, and from what I'm told his love of cars which is why hes more then happy to hit the highway with it when hes got time off.

I mean if you did have one, low kays, well looked after, sure in time the price would go back up, why - because there will be someone out there willing to pay top dollar for a 15 or 20, or 30 or 40 year old car in the same condition as when it rolled off the showroom floor all those years ago. Their even happ to pay more if the car was part of a limited edition such as many HSV's

My thoughts

I would think 15-20 years if you don't drive it!

They will definitely hold good/better value if the model really has been discontinued, and the best model will be worth most. Going up in value, I dont know.

Really though for arguments sake, lets say 75k brand new for a GTO, plus rego and insurance costs each year. Then puttting it in storage for 15 - 20 years. what's it going to go up in price to 170?, maybe if youre lucky..

If you wanna sit on an investment and would like a capital gain, buy a property.

These cars are meant to be driven. If youve never taken it out in the wet and had the a$$ slide out (made the a$$ slide out on you), youll never really appreciate what the car is and know what it is really worth.

In REAL terms, allowing for inflation, and the cost of keeping/storing/maintenance/insurance, & then comparing with similar dollar input for shares/investment property etc--PROBABLY NEVER. There's too many GTOs for them to be ever really collectable, so I don't think they'll reach that status. (& I've got one!)
Cheers, Pickles.

Unless you had build number 001 of each car but never drove it and kept it in showroom condition. I'm pretty sure being the very first one of that model off the production line would be worth something in the end.

Who really knows yet, but I suspect the "normal" Monaro's (with the desirable options only) and the GTS will keep the value a bit better.
