I have a 1998 vet with a LS1 after driving for around 60 minutes it starts to ping heavily under half throttle even with premium BP fuel any suggestions as to what is causing this. would it be my lifters that are making the noise as it does not do this for the first 60 minutes of driving.:o

Drop some Nulon Pro Strength OB into the tank next re-fill......cannot hurt

Get the intake air temp sensor checked out - only a guess but I've experienced it on a customer's car.

Or carbon buildup on top of the piston crown, these motors carbon up easy without regular oil changes.

What I would do is remove all the plugs and spray some carby cleaner into each port, put the plugs back in, then fire it up, it may be a struggle to crank at 1st, but it should blow out most of the crap via the tail pipe.

Give it a couple revs to clear the carbon out and then make sure you change your oil often and use good quality fuel onwards

thanks for your help, I will have to do all of those things. my engine has done 90 thousand miles now just about to put it in for a service at holden., sombody from kostecki performance perth recomended I use 25 60 grade oil to make the pinging noise go away , would that grade viscosity be correct for an engine with that high millage. ?

Its best you go and see a tuner in perth to resolve the problem as it can be anything from carbon build up to starvation of fuel causing leanmixture...etc

Could be a heat soak problem, as said earlier, go see a tuner to find out what is happening via some data logging, it may need some timimg pulled out to allow for under bonnet temps affecting IAT etc etc

You sure its pinging and not the cats rattling when they get warmed up?
