View Full Version : one tonner diff clunk
I had my VZ V8 one tonner to holden for a diff noise it was clunking when I backed of acceleration a distinct clunk.
They did a road test said they measured the back lash and it was within tolerance and normal (I dont think so)
I checked the diff cover plate and it has never been touched, how do they check the backlash for tolerance give me the clearance setting without taking the the cover off
Do any other one tonner owners have a diff clunk when backing off (mines auto)

There is an issue with diffs on VZ/VY Crewman/One-Tonner and we have had to replace a couple complete diffs at my dealership under warranty. Take it back to them or try another Holden dealer.

My Dad has a VZ one tonner and he has the same noise from the diff when backing off. His is the alloytec with the 6 speed. Its going in to be checked out in a few weeks.
when the dealer checked mine and said it was normal (back lash) plus checked my areial connection (another problem no reception 10klms out of town) I was given a bill for $175 because these were not covered by warranty (within holden limits) so be careful as I got the bill $175 (havent paid it yet) and the car is still the same as when I took it to holden (thanks a lot holden) nothing fixed at all just a bill for their poor build quality:argue:

Yep, mine is stating to clunk on-off accelerator and is developing quite a nice whine between 60 and 80km/h. Welcome to Holden ownership!
Has been to dealer twice = "We can't hear the clunk", "diff is within tolerance", "noise is normal", "they all do that", and, my favourite "it's wind noise from the roofracks" :argue:

mate I had the diff replaced twice in my V8 tonner, at first they said it was within tolerance but I just kept annoying them and hey presto the diff was now fixed. Its a known problem but they will do as little as possible if they can get away with it.
btw the diff was replaced at 1000kms and then at 30000kms and it was due to be replaced again at 51000kms but I sold it so didn't bother.

Mine's done 55,000 and has been gradually getting worse since about 30,000km. I should have said in my previous post that it clunks when getting back on the accelerator after backing off (is that a backlash issue?)

they will always have problems with those diff whilst they run the pinion bearing in vapour.
do yourselves a favour....if you get it back from Holden and it is silent and functional, jack the back of the ute as high as you can and put another litre of oil in the diff by holding your finger over the filler hole and top it until you can't get any more in. Quickly put the bung back without letting it all run back out.
Has worked with the ones I have rebuilt for customers that have had enough of Holden/BTR. Does womders for the wheel bearings too!!

So the problem is that there isn't enough oil in them ? My 34k old VY one tonner has what sounds like bearing noise in the diff .
Are they reasonably strong or would a better long term fix be a 9" conversion ?

mate they are over kill strength wise (makes a 9" look like a Banjo out of HR) but who ever designed the pinion angle on the thing needs rooting.

Would moving the filler plug up an 1/2 an inch or so give it enough oil , i had a bit of a look under the ute and it looks like it could be done .

fill it through the breather if you like....easier than welding a new filler bung in the diff.

A lot of others say that the crewmen has a weak diff, and that my crewmen will do a diff, whats funny is that i am running T-Turbos and getting big power and i give it hard time and have had no problems.

I remember discussing the Tonner Diff woes over a beer with Danny the diff man, after fitting the 3.7's...& described the Tonner gears to like having straight cut gears , you know the old timing gear and crank gear, noisey buggers hey.
well the more central location of where the pinion is located in realation to the crown wheel means the angle of the gears are more straight than the other diffs giving perhaps more metal to metal contact, Stronger but noiser ( develops a 'period' whine) than a more flowing angle where the pinion enters lower or higher,
this possibly allows a more unfixable backlash.
EDIT I see 'Howqicks' post now,, you could correct the above, if you think its not a good explanation as I recall it. Cheers Tonner
This diff problem is alot bigger than I thought, could this and other poor build quality problems be the reason holden has droped the one tonner.
I will be changing the diff ratio soon and will try the overfilling of the diff, is there a better grade of oil for this diff

Most of us use Hart's Transmissions at Brendale.
But I see you are in Sadstone .lol there should be someone reliable up that way, if not Rocky surely.
by dragging up this post again some one may see it now and have an answer for you,
cheers Tonner.

BTW, there is and never has been a REAL problem with the Tonner Diff,, its all forum hype.:hide:

Yeah this what Holden TAS rep told me its normal and its the quietest one his heard (no chance of getting it fixed under warranty) 28,000 klms old.
When I change the dff gears can this problem be fixed by a good diff shop as the constant clunking every time I back off if is giving me the shits. I was thinking of 3.4s as mine is auto and does country travelling

Had the same problem with my crewman "S" and they changed the diff. Am now waiting for the my second diff to arrive so that can be chaged too. No clunks tho this time around just the crown gear teeth noisey. I don't think they have the teeth cut right.
