With the new Commodore sports models wearing 18" and 19" wheels.

Was wondering what brands and what sort of wear peoples have had out of their current commodore tyres.

I ran a VY SS on the original Bridgestone Potenzas. Had the car for around 70Ks and during that time replaced the tyres twice (an average of around 3Oks per set)

Anyone used other brands or had exceptional performance/mileage out of their tyres.

Most of the 17" and above rubber is biased towards grip rather than long tyre life because they're designed for sporty or grunty models such as SS's & XR8's etc.

If you find a set of tyres that last a long time, you can bet that their grip will be second best.

If it's a cost issue, there's plenty of cheaper tyres around these days. Tyres such as Nankangs for example. I am not sure how long these last as I've never bought a set. Even if you only get 30,000 km's out of them, they're half the price of the big name brands so the only hassle is having to change them more often than a tyre that gives 50,000 km's of life.

most i ever got out of pzeros is 19,000k to wear marks and that wasnt driven hard. nankangs are good i had them in 20"s and found they gripped alot better then pzeros in 19"s.

My car is a rolling test for two types of tyres.

I have 2 Nangkang NS2's and 2 Hankook 104s that get rotated front to back.

Both have 40,000plus ks on them after stretching (and I mean stretching) the original SO3s to 35,000ks.

In all honesty...I cant seperate the two. I reckon I have at least 15000 to 20,000 ks left on each brand which will take their total life to maybe 60,000ks or double the original tyres. (at half the price).

your call.

Thanks for the feedback so far....bears out a number of things.

It's seems the original tyres provided by Holden/HSV - are premium brands but last about a year (25k's) and are priced at the top end of the market.

If other (cheaper) brands have been proven to last longer (maybe even twice as long) without noticable loss in perfomance - why stick with the high end ones.

It's a bit like the home brand stuff at supermarkets - sometimes they can be as good if not better than the named brands. Also sometimes they are made by the named brands and just remarketed under the supermarket label.

So...what I was trying to get first hand experience from others on was ...for those who have tried or are currently running different brands from originals - how are they comparing. Although the Motor mags sometimes do brand comparos - they always look at new tyre and never have data on those that have been in use for a year or two.

Thanks for the feedback so far..exactly what I was after.

That's right VooDoo,

The active ingredient in tyres is the same as the active ingredient in electronic components - SMOKE. BOTH cease to function when the smoke escapes.
