Hey guys, Was just wondering if any members who have owned or have a VX/VU model commo in a manual have had the same annoying rattle from their gear knob that im having at the moment. Every few minutes its starts to get this f&cking annoying rattle and i've found belting the knob downwards works for about 2 mins, but the rattle comes back.
Wondering if anyone knows any permanent way of fixing this. And before anyone says "Buy a New one", I would but the one i want costs about $200 bucks and i can't exactly afford that at the moment.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Yep, I know what you mean. Mine was pretty bad in 3rd, but was audible in most gears. I mentioned the noise to a dealer here in Melb and was told it was due to worn linkages, but as the car was 3 days out of warranty, it would cost to get them fixed....... Nice try.
A common fix-it job that Holden did was to remove the knob and squirt some silicone in there to "glue" the knob on to the shaft. This was done to mine and may have helped a bit, but not much. I did find that replacing the torn inner gear stick boot help a bit, as it acted as a dampener on the shaft.
Remove the gear stick boot and have a look at the inner boot to see if it's torn. I must have done 4 in my car so I think it's a common problem. To remove the "leather" boot, feel around the front of the boot and through the "leather" you well feel 2 clips. Just hook them with each thumb and lift the front of the boot up.
If I still had the car I was going to just wrap some rubber hose around the bottom half of the stick to increase its weight to see if that stopped it.

Sounds like a perfect excuse to fit a rip shift :D

That is one of the future plans along with a VY series 11 Gear knob. the satin Chrome one.

The RIP shift still has a rattle, but you will love it so much it won't bother you! :D

I have found that if you loosen the two bolts holding the shiter on the shaft and move it upwards( u get a little movement) and tighten the bolts it reduces this rattle a little. It worked for mine... worth a try wonts cost you anything.:hide:

My old VY SV8 rattled in 2,3,& 4th. Complained for 30000klm before they admitted there was a problem. Put a kit in at 30 which took the rattle out of 2nd. At 40000 they said they had another kit but had to have the car a full day as they had to strip the top of the box down. In the end it was a 20 cent bush that had split and that was the cause.

Sorry to be a nit picker, but I think it's spelt "SHITTER"

I have used two 45gram stick on weights from a tyre shop. Just stick them to either side of the shifter on the flat section.
I have a RIPSHIFT. This helps eliminate the rattle slightly as well..
I will try get a pic to help explain this better, if needed.

I had this problem in my VU SS. Absolutley gave me the shits! Luckily it was under warranrty and fixed by Holden. While it was being fixed they stuffed up the stitching on the leather gear boot. Had to leave work for another day so they could boot a new boot in. Bit annoyed to be honest.

There must be at least 30 different threads on shifter rattles if you do a search! No offence, but I'm surprised the big fella hasn't shut this down for being the same old, same old.....

Mine did the same thing...still had factory warranty so I peeled the clear rubber thing that overs the top and with that done, got it changed free for a brand new one. But alas...it didnt help...after a couple of months it started up again.
Poor design I think...or maybe the car is just tooooo powerful...either way I am stuck with my knob rattling...

Righto, i drove the car home the other day with no knob on, it was quiet as not a rattle at all. So i tried the idea of putting another cable tie round the other one like someone said, still no luck if anything its gotten worse. Im so close to throwing the knob out the window its not funny.
Any other idea's?
Or
WTB: VY Series 2 onwards manual Gear knob ( the ones with the satin finish ) PM me if you have one for sale or know where i can get one cheap. Cheers

I think you'll find that in your case the rattle has nothing to do with the fitting of the gear knob. As I previously mentioned an early Holden fix was to glue the knob on with silicon. This had no effect on mine as the source of the rattle was actually in the linkages.
Now I know that driving without the knob makes it quiet, as mine was like that to. I have 2 theories about that, 1 is that the surface area of the knob acted like a speaker and "amplified" the sound. 2 is that the weight of the knob helped the whole gear stick to vibrate at certain revs and rattle. It was probably a bit of both.
It's interesting to see that in the VZ, Holden twisted the mounting flange of the gear stick 45 degrees, so the bolts now aim from the steering wheel to the back of the passenger seat. I wonder if that had anything to do with the rattle?
So far I think th best idea I've seen in this thread is the wheel weights. If enough weight was placed low enough, I think it would stop the rattle. Of course anything heavy would work and I'd probably just use some tape to stick the weights on till I got the best spot.
Simon.

good fitting underwear should stop your knob rattling!! I had three shifters under warrantee and still have slight noise now but I'm over it. It rattles less than my L200 ute so I don't care.
