View Full Version : Can we have a public Commercial Section Please?
Can we have a Public Forum (maybe under technical) for blatant Commercial posts to be made? I'm not talking about regular "these are the commodore parts I have for sale this week" type things. More - these are the services I provide and my contact details.
I've been reading CSVAustralia's posts about CSV, and think in the right area the responses to direct questions is of value, as is an awareness of the services provided. Would love for HSV to make the same effort.
Earlier today EFIDynamics posted about his own LS1 related services. I assume (since it was an ad) that is was removed. When I indicated those sorts of posts were not looked on too kindly he indicated his surprise and said he didn't realise. (Not a regular Forum browser.) I did ask him a few questions though via email and appreciated the answers I got. If people like him had an area they could use, we all might benefit.
How we are going to stop shops bagging each other.. well.. that I have no answer for.
:)
That sounds like a good idea to me, would it be much extra work for the mods & admins of the site though? I kind of like the idea of being able to come here for all my LS1 needs :) If it turns out to be valuable for them they might even part with some cash, takes the forum to a different class of site though. :hmmm:

Us mods discussed this not long ago.
We have decided that companies are allowed to post a reply but are not allowed to put up any pricing and must be very conservative about this. (Only with For Sale section)
Why should we let companies advertise here as a free service?
We are not interested in the time being of sponsorship etc for the forum. It makes things to complicated.

I think you guys are missing the boat. Information posts like Blowns SC post and this CSV post are not advertising, they are infomation giving though.....hmm sounds like a FORUM to me.
Are you sure some of you guys dont work for the state government? Dont over-police this forum, you'll degrade what has turned out to be a very good source of infomation and sometimes bullshit.
:soap: still.

That is fair enough.
Production companies would be great to have online here. They are the source, the product that this is all about.
But do we need performance shops advertising here?
No.
The last thing we need is:
- Hey come to my shop I will do it for ya for X
Then a reply
- No, come to mine I will do it for X - 1
A Forum is for ordinary people to share there comments and thoughts etc.
Then us the general user can make up our mind who to go to.
Hope you understand blokes! :)
That sounds like a good idea Doug. Only thing hindering is the decisions of the members of the board. ;)

Fabian, that was one of my reasons for the suggestion I made, clearing all posts to be posted in a commercial section, and closing the thread so no replies are allowed. This would then force people to PM, email or phone the business concerned and would stop the "no, come to my shop I'm cheaper, they are no good ".
The charging of suppliers posting is a problem, without getting to messy some options could include.
1. A donation to the forum by the business
2. The business gives a discount to the forum member who then passes on (voluntarily) a portion of the discount as a donation.
Given more thought I'm sure some others could come up with other options and if more mods are required to administer the commercial section, I'm sure there would be plenty of volunteers
 :bounce: :D
But do we need performance shops advertising here?
Yes - but not in the way you are talking about. How about a sticky moderated thread only that lists the performance shops name, address and contact details, and list of services? No pricing etc - all text based. I think that would be of value. Why demand money for this? It might open the forum up to event sponsership / discounts down the track though.
I still think we need some sort of way of allowing the CSV type thread (ignoring the HSV bashing). Closer, or at least more sociable relationships between the forum and commercial companies could be beneficial. You only have to check out the response from similiar threads to know members find it of interest and value. If HSV got on (officially) and posted details of cars etc and answered things directly, or Holden passed through more information (as Ford does on the Ford Forums). Not having to wait for the monthly magazine to find out about new products is rather cool.

Here is what I posted in the CSV Thread regarding advertising etc.
It's not bullshit Matty ... Think of it this way. The forum is run by people who donate their time and effort for FREE. The server the forums run on is generously donated space/bandwidth. It is highly unethical to make a profit from people's genrosity and effort. It would be like making a profit off UNICEF or the like, metaphorically. If people start profiteering from the forum then people will get the shits that someone else is making money from their donation of effort and as such will remove their effort/support and things will then cost money. This will then make it NECESSARY to bring in sponsorship and advertising which I am sure we don't want.
There is no problem with CSV being here or anyone else for that matter and I welcome more manufacturers, but please keep in mind that this is a "community" and it is not the place for advertising. If you have something new to tells us all then please do but tone down the commercial content and increase the technical content :D
It's not the easiest trying to regulate this stuff because there are alot of grey areas.
The overhead in time and effort will prove to be too much if we start down the sponsorship path and there are also Tax issues. It is not as simple as saying yeah let's get people to sponsor us.
There was a suggestion for a new section in the private area for people to post good and bad experiences with shops/people. This is being considered but it could prove to be a bit of a shit fight.
Maybe an alternative would be to have a Links section with no info in it other than URLs to suppliers, no posting allowed. At least this way the info is easy to get to rather than trawling the web. The URLs could be suggested by suppliers or members.

Jase, I agree whole heartedly, advertising on a public forum is not on. The post's i refered to where not advertising. I also agree that regulating this type of post will not be easy, but it will be worthwhile.
The suggestion for good/bad experiances will be fun, maybe when you open that particular section you could have "lets get ready to rumble" played.

Matt: they may not have been blatant advertising but they were posts for profit. Both the threads you are referring to were posts to help boost the individual's product to in turn make a profit.
The CSV thread initially had a strong advertising slant to it. But they have corrected this, thanks :D
The SC thread also was asking for people to be in the Magazine, why to give it content and this in turn would make it more salable and profitable for the parties involved with the MAG.
I know for a FACT that Harrop are on the forum but you don't see them blatantly advertising do you. :D When relevant questions have been asked they have been answered however.
I also appreciate G&D and Starr's participation and the absence of advertising. F1 Performance also appear to be going down this path now :D
The best thing for anyone with a product is let their customers do the selling through satisfaction. :D

I disagree on this one, J.Grey made an offer to people on this forum, our forum, to have a chance to get one of our cars in his mag. He dosnt give two blobs of baby shit if we are there or not. Nor will he profit from one of our cars, there are plenty out there to feature. People would buy the mag with or withoue one of the cars from this forum. Im not asking you to allow profit making or price advertising posts, just be reasonable.
Sidey, i know you will argue underwater so ill leave it at that. :D :p I think ive got a nappy to change....arhhggg:hide:
