Mine was a VN GTS, the dressed up equivalent I guess of the SV6 running around now. This had all the trimmings of an SS except it had the V6, and even had the wheel spokes colour-matched to the car colourand boy it drove well. These were produced in white and navy blue only, and mine was blue...bought it new for my company car and drove it for 90,000km and then my wife had it. When she eventually sold it to friends, it had 250,000km on the clock, and they sold it with 380,000Km on the clock....all on the original engine, transmission, etc. My wife and I have been Holden drivers ever since....and the our 16-yearold netball-playing daughter now wants an Astra convertible...:xmas:

Before the VN, I had one of the very first EA Falcons produced by Ford, brand-new from the factory. Had so many problems with it I took it back after 3 weeks and 1000Km and demanded my money back....

Mike,
I see you're driving a VS: my wife still drives her VS Equipe (factory dressed-up with the batmobile rear spoiler and HBD body kit) registered new in 1999, and she would not sell the darned thing!! It's done 70,000 km and is still tight to drive. I really liked the batmobile rear spoiler: not too intrusive, it balanced out the VS nicely. Too bad HBD don't offer it on the new models.

My VZ-SS feels smaller inside, compared to my wife's VS....and a lot smaller compared to my previous ride (LX8).

HQ Statesman Deville .. 308, auto, electrics, air .. what a dog. Stock carb'd 308s are nothing to write home about. The 351C Falcon sedan I owned around the same time would eat it for breakfast ..

My first Holden was one of the very first VT Series I "SS" (in Bermuda Blue).

I traded my EF XR6 in on it, and I can quite safely say that in a drag race my old XR would have easily flogged the "SS". It was staggeringly slow!

69 HK Premier, 350 010, fuelies,650dp, 'glide, lsd and an appetite for fuel & oil that would make a Saudi' blush :o :o

First ever Holden I drove was a HK Kingswood around the back padock. The first Holden I ever owned was a VC Commodore (just a six, but had a small cam, extractors etc). Then a VL Berlina and now a VS Berlina. The VS is getting old and handles like a boat so I won't have it for much longer.

(Keeping an eye on the dropping prices of the LS1 powered vehicles though :shiner: as I would like a V8 Calais)

1st: VL exec auto, nothing special but very reliable.
2nd: VS exec, police pack, nice car
3rd: VT 'S', supecharged V6, wish I'd kept it, too much debt to get out of at the time
4th: VL SL 5 Spd, with full Calais interior. Liked this one a lot, sold it when the oldies offered me thier car, another VT, at a steal
5th and current: VT 'S', Ecotec V6, Auto, no options when new. Currently has power windows, rear camber kit and VX SS wheels. Looking to do exhaust next, current system is ready to fall off, then mod the head unit with RCA's and fit an amped set of 6x9's in the back. Would like to supercharge it but the funding isn't there.
Chuck a couple of Barina's in there too, car's the ex has owned, current one is about to die on her, hahaha.

HQ Monaro 4 door with 308 and 4 speed manual - TA Radials which were death in the wet and too wide (so the guards would scrape the sidewall of the tires) in 1983

Did a whole lot of very silly things in that car :D

Mine was a VK Berlina. Was after a V8 but the old man convinced me about petrol, insurance and all. Got one with a nice pale metallic green paint, mags and exhaust but with a injected 202.

I knew fark all about cars so trusted my dad's and brothers opinion. In the end I think I spent about $6000 just keeping it on the road in the first year. Now I shop alone and do my own research. That lemon put me off Holdens for awhile, but in the end I couldn't resist the LS1 :)

LH Torana, 2850 straight six, 3-speed manual on the tree.
Tough as nails with real steel bumper bars for driving through walls, bonnet tough enough to sit on at the drive-inn (remember those?).
On a cold Canberra morning though, you couldn't select 2nd!
Hated the stupid pedal emergency brake. Nearly broke my shin more than once releasing it and taking it over the pits at rego time was a farce when it came to testing the emergency brake!

Two tone maroon/silver (was silver but the top half was sprayed maroon ala VH SL/E) VB L.
3.3L 4spd manual.
15" mags.
Mods:
5 speed celica box
Chewed up the fibre cam gear so got a mild cam and alloy gear
Extractors and 2.5" system
Blew a head gasket so had the head ported and fitted with blue six valves and 110# springs (wow, I was impressed at the time)
Blue six electronic dizzy.
Rejetted the stock carby, planning on triple SU's but sold it and got a VN :D

Coming from a mostly holden family (seem to be the only one that is into fords).. my first car was a hand me down...

1) HQ Prem, Auto (column shift), 202, Gold with the white roof, bench front seat (I think it was a 1972 one)...

2) HJ Prem, Auto, bronze colour (from memory) 253 I think (maybe 30?? whatever)

3) LH Torana (loved this car, would have another anytime) 253, manual, 9inch LSD, weird paint (white in sunlight but pale blue when dull day or night time)...

then I saw the light.... and its been fords ever since

VN Calais - Bought it in '92 (I think).. Kept it till last year when I bought a v2 Monaro. Served me well and never had any major problems with it. I used to flog it around a fair bit too. Hope the Monaro serves me that well (already I took it in for a $260 service last week and get a $1300+ bill - hope that's not a trend!).

VL SL 3L 5spd ... great car, enough power to have some fun as a silly kid but not enough to get me into real trouble like I probably would have done in a modded V8, OK economy, comfortable. It was still going after 480,000km but only just, still it was a sad day when I traded it.

VL Commodore - stock apart from 2.5" cat back exhaust - trusty nissan engines
now drive the vx ss.

frist ever car was toyota celica - 78 model. Choke used to get stuck, so it would go up to around 60km/h by itself (changing auto gears and all) without any accellerator. HAd to push it to reverse the bands were slipping bad. Oh and you needed to spark the bugga with a screwdriver before you could turn it over...ahh memories

First I bought a 1967 HR - repowered with a 186 stripped the engine down and threw in hi perf pistons, XU1 cam, yellow terra head, balanced, tripple carbs, extractors and twin exhausts, I still laugh about it now, went great in a straight line
Next was the one I wish I never sold - 69 GTS Monaro
Then HQ Monaro, HZ Monaro, VN Calais 5L, VP SS.
Now almost anything I want to drive :)
The great thing about all those old models is you can still find them out there in greater numbers than any other make

1st - was my first car an 84 VK Commodore S6 great car (odometer didn't work witch kept the km's low, head gasket went, gear box went and then the speedo went meaning it was 10-20 kmh under which made it fun to drive)

2nd - 94 VR Berlina V6 great car had been taken care of by my brother so was great until I traded it in on my current Holden

3rd - 02 VY Berlina V8 so far so good.

1) in 2002 a 1997 VS Executive which is the first car I got behind the wheel of on my L's - after passing for my L's I went out of the RTA in a quiet street and straight onto a main road at 60 kph onto a highway at 80 kph, none of this slowly learn crap, I was straight into it and never looked back! Had a new pulsar N16 in 2003 when I got my P's (we brought it so I could learn manual) but the VS always had my attention and I would move the Pulsar out of the way if it meant being able to drive the VS. People still think I'm crazy by choosing a 1997 VS over a brand new (at the time) car. Drove it in 2003 and 2004. In the 2 years the Pulsar clocked up 16 000 K's, most of them from mum and dad driving it so it didnt do alot of driving!

2) 2005 dad brought a VZ SX6 Adventra under salary sacrafice, which I put in each week for to help with repayments on the condition I have it when he doesnt. Works out well too and nice to drive of a weekend. Cant wait for summer though with the windows down and the sunroof opened!

3) early 2006 the first time I could afford a car of my own, my beloved 2001 VX Executive SS knock off. Can only just literally afford it, I was still on 1st year apprentice wages when I got the finance, but to those 1st years who whinge that their pay doesnt go anywhere I ask them to look at my car because if they put their mind to it it is acctually affordable if thats what they really want.

The next one, hopefully VF SS if the VE can survive a 3 year run (it should, the VT went from 97 to 2000). Would also love to get a Torana XU1 or similar, possibly an original Monaro as a weekender, both cars well and truley before my time but I would love one to fang around town on a Saturday arvo - true Aussie muscle cars.

LH 173 Torana – Grandfather’s car. Everyone learnt to drive on it (and put a ding in the panel). Traumatic transmission. Not interested in going sideways at all, I did get the back out once (braking in the wet at a roundabout) then had to fight about 4 turns lock to lock to gather it up. Pop used to tease us and say that he could’ve bought a V8 version but he didn’t want one.

LJ 173 Torana – Bought as a runabout when I was dead broke. Heater never worked, gearbox linkages used to bind up and I had a screwdriver sitting next to me so that I could unjam them, the world’s strangest gearbox ratios (2nd covered a large range from memory), Dad and I fiddled with the accelerator and brake pedals so that I could heel and toe properly. Finest moment was overtaking a spun out BMW at Winton, lowest moment was going straight on at Sandown’s turn 1 with boiled brake fluid. It had 70 series tyres that I used to pump up at stupid pressures. Damn I learnt a lot from that car. T-boned a VW two weeks after a reco engine went in (the damn thing flew after that). I was looking at a LJ XU1’s after that but never quite made the jump.

VC Commodore 2850cc. Dad’s car. I learnt about bump steer in that car, he used to let me thrash it around country roads when I was “learning to drive”. I can still remember him saying “understeer and oversteer. It’s all BS you don’t need to worry about that stuff to get a license”. I always wanted him to get a 308 in it and a Brock flare kit and never understood why he didn’t get one even with one wage and a tertiary educated family. Years later now I understand why he couldn’t afford it.

Technically speaking first car was a HQ Statesman (plain and simple - not a deville or caprice - just a statesman) - was given to me by the old's but rusted out and I was at uni and had no money so we sold it.

Then HQ Premier, WB (S2) Statesman and CV8 Monaro - only 3(4) cars and all lion emblems ;)

Totally stock standard 8 year old 3 on tree 179 EH. Ended up with (the mandatory for hot EH :) ) 4 gauge set above original speaker, top of line cassette player with a whole 4!! speakers and whizz bang fader, bucket seats, 4 on floor, extractors, XU1 cam, Yella Terra head etc.. For its time it flew but probably would be left for dead by most new cars these days......... :(

My first car was a 1974 LH Torana SL/R, Solomon Blue, only a 253, had a solid cam etc, full manual trimatic (3000 stall), 9 inch 4.11:1 detroit locker. That was back in 1995. :)

I used to drive it to school (Eventhough i only lived a couple of blocks away!! lol) & park it in the teachers carpark. That was until i got in trouble cos my mates & i would hang out in the carpark at lunchtime.

1996 - HJ Kingswood - good car
1996 - VH 2850 - bought it cheap!
1996 - SL/X - Lasted nearly a year before being traded on....
1997 - VL SL RB30 5sp - What a car... fantastic except for the air con!
2000 - VP 5L 185KW - Now I look back, it went like a rocket.... and cost as much to run and maintain (Gaskets, brakes, tyres, radiator, hoses, ECU, wheel bearings...) traded it in in 2004 when it still only had 170K on it.
2004 - VX Berlina 5.7 HBD - OK but had been smashed... that led me to...
2004 - CV8 Monaro! (I was 25! yeehaa)

I still have the Monaro... since then I accumulated a 1988 2.5D 4x4 Rodeo as a daily

And the ex had 2 VZ 175 Alloytecs... they were....OK just sluggish

1st new car was a New XF FORD Falcon 1987
aka P.O.S. - character mind you, but you had to spend you weekends under the bonnet or getting wheel alignments that only lasted while on the wheel aligner. How people used as these as Taxis has got me stumped as the amount of oil & coolant issues this car had was unbelievable and dealer visits under warranty, man you could really buy a house nearby. It was more durable in it's last years of life (After much work by myself than when it was new).
Final straw was that managed to last until it was trying to killme - would dart all over the road, flexing body and suspension which could "never" be aligned.
Almost as bad a Mitsubishi company car at the time I recall.

Test Drove both the VX and Toyota Avalon as rental cars before placing order for the VXII pre-released based on price bracket creep.

The VX rental weakend test drive 388km long, proved it was so Much a better car than the Toyota at the time and it well constructed - not a poorly cheaply built Ford - it had....
Great handling on and off throttle
Auto gearbox although more commercial like but had a bit of Engine braking vs Toyota None
Brakes were progressive
This car had character and actually worked great!

2nd New Car VXII Acclaim, 2001
So when The VXII arrived it was all wished for,
The Car steers straight and perfect tire wear to this day - NEVER had a wheel alignment, amazing handling - even on a Tasmanian twist highspeed holiday (First car I took over seas).

The only thing is Holden dealer service, but most manufactures have the same problem - world class car manufacture, 3rd world service departments at 1st world prices. So servicing is owner again.
It's so nice just to do regular servicing and everthing is just 100% ok.

Next car ?
This one going to last I feel - especially with personal 100% care by the book. or these days the service CD!

Definitely prefered the Monaro, but I don't find the actual driving experience too much different. Unfortunately when a Monaro is your only car and a daily driver, there are occasions when it is a bit impractical (that's why I had the Pintara). Could have picked virtually any car (within my price range) I wanted as it was a novated lease but I couldn't justify the cost of running a second car, so went for the SS purely for practical reasons. Sold the Monaro & took a big bite out of my mortgage, sold the Pintara & bought a big screen TV.

1st - 1952 48-215 - This one started out as a project to be rebuilt as a stocker and then somewhere along the way ended fitted up with a 202 and Trimatic, then one day came across a smashed VP ex cop car and pulled the 304 and TH700R4 out if it and replaced the 202 combo, it still sits in the garage to this day awaiting completion :nopity:

2nd - 1951 48-215 - This was an ex race car and went pretty well, 60 over FB grey motor, 10 under crank, lightened flywheel, extensive port job on the head with heat pipes going direct to radiator, triple SU's, cam based on LJ XU1, Jack Myers headers with straight through single 2" system and hotdog muffler, electronic dizzy, 4 core radiator, lever action and telescopic shocks on front with twin sway bars, 9 leaf rear springs, 3.55 LSD, heavy duty finned racing drums on the front, 13x6 wheels with original stud pattern and hubcaps :D

3rd - Family HQ Kingswood, 202 on gas and had power steering, was a great workhorse especially when gas was under 10cents a litre at the time :yup:

4th - TE SL/X Gemini - Great little car, was originally a diesel but changed it over to a petrol jobbie, had taller 3.5 diff and stronger 5 speed being out of the diesel, also front brakes were bigger too from memory. Killed the puny 1600 and fitted an 1800 Jackeroo motor, was a real weapon for what it was, also had E36 (?) BMW steel wheels which looked like interceptors :)

5th - WB HDT Magnum Stato - For its size and weight it was a great handling car with the HDT spec suspension consisting over really stiff springs and Bilsteins, the Group3 Brock engine went OK too. Had the usual Momo steering wheel and 15x7 wheels, also was totally colour coded with no chrome showing.

6th - VU SS - The reason I am here I suppose, had one of the LS1's that didn't drink oil, was caned from the day I got it, had HSV CAI, Pacemaker 4>1's with Remus Race System topped off with a Street Tuna tune :) By the time I sold it at 24,000k's it had 3 diffs replaced for crappy LSD's, one auto trans and 4 near bald tyres :yup:

7th - Can't decide at this point, been without a car for over 2 years now and don't miss the continual expense of running them :deal:

Hi,

The trouble with this thread is that the young guys have it easy!
The old guys have to go through the photo albums, (or ask the wife) as it was too long ago.
First to last, sorry about the boring family cars.
FC holden M3, EK holden M3, HD M3 holden panel van, HK GTS 307 M4 monaro, HT GTS 327 M4 monaro (ex 186), XA GT sedan M4, XY GS 351 M4, XF ford M4, A9X sedan, sigma (piece of shite), barina (sorry), holden Nova (still sorry), big block 2.2L camry (very sorry), V6 camry (great car, grandpa would luv it), VX SS M6, V2 CV8 M6, VU 3.8L M5 ute, VZ 3.6L M6 ute, XB GS 351 A3 coupe, VZ SSZ A6 ute.
As you can see it's a real mixed grill.
The cars I loved/ respected the most are the HK 307 GTS, XA GT M4, A9X and the CV8 monaro.
I think the key to a good car is to remove the compromise components that the manufacture told us we had to have.
Long live the mighty Holden Lion.

Cheers.

First ride...

HT Premier which I bought from a deceased estate. Good points -
only 50k miles, beautiful paint and mint interior. Not so good - 186
boat anchor and trimatic column auto...

Kept for 3 years, polished and detailed within an inch of its life, spent
every cent I earned on mags, suspension, and endless visits to american autos for chrome dress up bits and other trinkets.

Turned heads like you wouldnt believe, still regret selling it.

Sold it and stepped up to a VN SS - the usual mods - chip, extractors,
exhaust which burbled and popped at high revs, and shift kitted auto.
Talk about a leap in performance....

And so the story goes.

My first Holden that I bought for $20...that's right $20...was a LC Torana. Needed a every day car at the time. This was back in 1990. It was a great car and reliable. I was worried about my XAGT Coupe getting stolen.

1st Holden Bought a 1988 VL turbo Berlina at 18 in 1990. Spent $15000 in mods but did it go. Around 240rwkw for a VL was fast. Done up to look like a Group A.

So the List goes

1st - 1988 VL Turbo Berlina
2nd - VN V6
3rd - VL Turbo Executive (Stolen)
4th - VRSS
5th - VSSS
6th - VS Calais V8
7th - VN SS Project Car 355 stroker 270rwkw.
8th - VX Clubsport
9th - VZ Clubsport GenT 1000 Turbo

Also during this time had numerous other cars - Gemini with turbo bolted on, Starion turbo, VH SLE worked 308, LX SS Hatch worked 308, VB SLE 253, XC GXL 351, Ford Capri , VS V8 police pack, BA Falcon Police Pack, XD Falcon S Pak.

Theres is more but iam forgetting some as theres so many. At some times when i was early 20s had 3 cars at the same time.

Gee i spent some money.

Mate,
My 2nd car was a VK Sedan with the 202 injected engine.
I flogged the crap outa it for 13 years and the only prob was dizzy gear chewing.
It was all red, bumper included, lowered on Lovell springs, 21mm front sway bar, Brock grille, Pedders heavy gas all round, 14x7 mondial mags with 225 potanzas, 2.5 inch straight pipe to a hotdog,(you could hear it miles away).
You know, they were the only stock Holden car fitted standard with extractors?
Motor was closer to a stock 5.0 in kw's than a 253.
The Bosch jetronic system was the same as the 911 of that era had.
Sorted the dizzy gear prob by fitting a steel one, sounded like it had a bloody supercharger under the hood.
I loved that car, hence the long time I had it.

The gearbox crunched in most of the gears as well. I took my vn back a couple of days after to get the radiator replaced and i asked for a car to drive, they couldnt give me that car to drive because they already lent it to someone who revved the hell out of it and blew the timing chain wich was funny for a little while untill i was forced to drive a datsun for a couple of days instead:mad: :flamin: it jumped speedhumps well though:woohoo:

after a diet of Daihatsu's (Handi 3 door 22kw) and Charade (36kw) my first Holden was a used VK wagon, 3.3 traumatic auto which was crashed into while parked outside my parents place the night we got it. I purchased the car in 1990, the day Iraq invaded Kuwait and fuel went through the roof overnight. I went from 46mpg around townin the Charade to 18mpg in the VK! At least I had some space and a comfy ride.

This car got smashed again by a lady pulling out from a stop sign without looking a couple of months later. Needless to say this car was jinxed and we got rid of it quick.

Then we got a VN Berlina 5.0 wagon (had big dogs so needed a wagon), first V8 and an effortless tourer at the time; it had cruise!

Next was a VT2 Clubsport (Tiger) woohoo! This was fun even if an auto.

Now we have a Devil yellow GTO coupe and love it, a VT2 berlina wagon and a VS Cr*per to get to work.

VE GTS is on order. Given that my first car had just 22kw, 307kw is out of this world.

My first car was an EA falcon with 500,000km’s I had it for 2 weeks then saw the light and bought a VS commodore, that tried to kill you in the wet with the live rear axle and hardly any weight over the rear wheels, I kept the VS for 4 years then I bought a brand new VZ but I still miss the VS it was the best car I’ve ever owned.

1970 LC Torana, 161, pissed off the three on the tree for a Celica 5 speed and had a genuine 63,000 miles on it when I got it off my grandfather. Kept it for about a year or so, but sold it when I needed a more reliable car for work. Last I heard it's still running around the Penrith area with a 308 in it.

Mine was an LC Torana 4 Door S with a 161, i bought it off a guy i used to work with how had tricked the suspension up ( basically XU1 spec ) but sold it to me with the original motor.

I bought a 4 speed which we thought was a m20 from a sedan but was a m22which was out of a 1 tonner so first gear was useless unless you wanted a super quick get-away from the lights.

Second one was VB SL/E with a 253, i was working on an Auscar at the time so i got a few bits and pieces of tat which made the old 253 go a bit harder, it would keep up with 308's which wasnt to bad considering the drive train was otherwise stock.

Holden Gemini... being a gutless stocko Gemi saved me from my overconfident but lacking driving skills I had in my younger years!!

It was also great being able to pull off the head, replace gaskets, have the local mechanic shave the head, and "correct" the polution gear setup in the parents driveway and have it back together the same day.. no computers or funky setups to complicate things!!

My first car, also my first holden, was a HZ kingswood 253 / 4speed manual. it was my fathers and he gave it to me when i was 16 and i spent 2 years stripping it and prepping it for paint, back when i painted it (2000 i think) i was in love with bermuda blue mica so that it was. had flat top pistons tq20 cam ported heads and a 3 inch single exhaust... and a sunroof.. oh the sunroof i miss that, but ill never have another car with a sunroof again coz they get old and leak.
other holdens ive owned since then
VL wagon
VL berlina
VL BT1 - still own, 10sec motor complete just needs injectors and a tune and,
VYSS - also still own.

and as a kid i still remember riding in dads HQ 25th anniversary Prem... it was silver, twin headlight front end, special trim i think being a 25th anni model, and the must-have essendon bombers sticker on the rear window ;)
