Ok, so I've been doing some thinking of late. I know I know, it's becoming a habit of late, but when I drive around in varying speed zones I often wonder what gear other M6 owners are using in the same zone. So just reply to this thread and list what you normally use for the various speed zones:
40kmh - 3rd
50kmh - 3rd
60kmh - 4th
70kmh - 4th
80kmh - 4th
100kmh - 5th
110kmh - 6th

40kmh - 3rd
50kmh - 4th
60kmh - 4th or 5th (Depends on my mood)
70kmh - 5th
80kmh - 5th

110kmh - 6th

really depends on my mood, but here we go:
1st - 20
2nd - 40
3rd - 50
4th - 60
5th - 70
6th - 80 and above
the alternative is:
1st - 79
2nd - 129
3rd......
4th......
5th......
6th......

3rd - 50
4th - 60
5th - 80
6th - 100 and above
Alternate, as above.....
40kmh - 3rd
50kmh - 4th
60kmh - 5th (drop back to 4th if going up hills)
70kmh - 5th
80kmh - 5th
100kmh - 5th (sometimes 6th)
110kmh - 6th
I find that going to 5th in 60 zones greatly increases fuel economy :)

Wow 5th at 60 clicks I would think it'd only be idling at that speed unless you've changed your diff gearing?

Call it the old motorcycle racer in me:
1st - walking pace to 15-20km/h
2nd 20-50km/h
3rd 30-70 km/h
4th 40-80
5th 70+
6th 90+
This is for 'non-performance' (some would say my only mode!)
If I'm in traffic I tend to hold onto 2/3 and use small throttle openings but maybe a few more revs.
If by myself I tend to use moderate throttle and shortshift.
As soon as I have a clear road with no anticipated stops, slot into highest gear that keeps at least 1500 revs up.
All that goes out the door if in 'hoon' mode. Happy to drop to third at 90 to overtake.

interesting topic.
Although i have a 6T, i find that using lower revs actually increases my fuel consumption on some occasions. Mines a 5 speed manual, but at 60 i'm usually in 4th at about 2100rpm, and i won't shift to 5th unless i'm above 80km/h.
I try not to drive my car under 2000rpm especially going up hills, or if i know that i need to apply anymore then half throttle. I was told by a gearbox specialist that by flooring it under 2000rpm i'll kill the gearbox in no time.
These days i am mainly just cruising along, so i'll often keep revs about 1800rpm in 5th or 4th, but if i need to get moving, i always drop it back.

Since I got the VY SS I drive it as follows.
1st - 30
2nd - 50
3rd - Never use it unless giving it some stick
4th - 50 - 60
5th - 60 to 90
6th - 90 up.
I do use 6th though if i'm constantly at 70 or above for long periods dropping it back a cog for hills.

In cruising mode would be
1st - 20
2nd - 40
3rd - 50
4th - 70
5th - 80
6th - 90 and above

1st to 20/30
3 to 55/60
then cruise in 5th for most speeds upto 110 (it comfortly sits on 1400rpm at 60kph)
i use 2nd and 4th gears if they are need like when going up hills of if faster accelation is needed
great way to save fuel

no its not fine at all with 3.46
It does labour the motor......sounds dreadful...and wouldnt surprise me if its buggering up the box either....to me 5th ( with 3:46 gears ) isnt any good till at least 80kph

With use of the "search" button I think you will find some detailed information on here about gearbox damage as a result of labouring in 5 & 6 as a result of travelling around 60 kph (search for posts by wbt56 ?).
With the price of fuel I have found myself often dropping into 5 in wheras previously I reserved 5 for longer runs above 80 kph. Makes a modest difference to the fuel consumption.

the guy you're referring to would most likely be Ben or Mal from Mal Wood Automotive. And they're the guys who told me to keep the car above 2000rpm especially if putting the foot down. The massive increase of torque at this rpm range puts the box under enormous load. Also told me to use 5th gear only when going 100km/h or above.. occasionally i use 5th at 80-90km/h but only when cruising on a straight flat road, or down hill.. Although i have a 5 speed, i'm sure using 6th in the commodore at these speeds would surely labour the engine. Although using those gears does save fuel slightly, the biggest fuel saver is the right foot. I can be in 4th at 70-80km/h and still use a modest 9L/100 on the instant fuel consumption reading. Going to 5th gear on a flat road might drop that to about 7.5 or 8.. however, as soon as there is a slight increase in slant of the road, the consumption will increase to 15+L and the engine will labour. Keeping it in 4th will see a consumption of about 12L with no labour.. these figures are of course all relative to my throttle application and grade of the hill.

My point exactly, I've only had limited experience with a manual LS1 (hoping to own one in a few days fingers crossed :) ) but when shifting to 5th much below 100 they seem to labour and certainly 6th doesn't provide any real acceleration, to me that says something has to be taking the stress if you can floor an LS1 and have it barely change in speed :teach:
Hmm, interesting point about it labouring in 5th. When I say I cruise around at 60 in 5th gear, obviously if I need to put my foot down or come to a hill I drop it back a gear or 2. If you are on level ground, or better still going down a hill, I don't understand how it puts any extra stress on the gearbox? Anyway, I might take your advise all the same as I don't want to risk doing any damage...

Yeah I spose it is a "mood" thing but I generally go...
40kph - 2nd
50kph - 3rd
60kph - 3rd (sometimes 4th)
70kph - 4th
80kph - 4th
90kph - 4th
100kph - 4th (sometimes 5th)
110kph - 5th
Have had my beast since 2003 and can count on one hand the number
times I have used 6th gear. Just don't use it unless I'm travelling down a freeway or similar.

60 5th
70 5th
80 5th
100 6th
110 6th
I have never had the engine labour in 5th at 60, if i slow down to 50clicks it starts to worry, i usually am in 6th at 70-80 on the flat, but any hill and i change down,.
take off from lights, 1st, give it a hit to about 50clicks then up to 4th then 5th... no trouble. Stock diff too

Im lazy and tend to jump gears though i shift into the next gear before skipping. depends on mood traffic level load etc etc.

Going by the heading I would say 'shorts and T shirt'.:cool: what a lovely day 27deg.
Slightly different slant to this thread but damn close is that since my edit I have found that the A4 wont change up until:
1 = 20kph
2 = 35kph
3 = 50kph
4 = 65kph
This is idle mode of course.... with a standard 3.07 diff.
The other mode is:
1 = 83kph
2 = 145kph
3 = 207kph
4 = unknown
cheers
