View Full Version : 1998 Clubby Vs VY SS?
Looking to start my lifelong dream of V8 Holden driving.
Still deciding on Ute Vs Sedan, but leaning towards 4 doors just in case Kids come along.
Prices seem to be similar for VY SS and VT VU Clubby.
Does anyone have any advice regarding preference?
At this stage, standard set up is fine, but mods may come in the future...
The VY exhibits the new style interior and is very appealing. Want leather. The Clubby (even a senator on the market at the moment) looks similar, but wheel and dash different.
Are there major differences going with HSV over standard Holden??
Ta everyone, see on rumbling on the tarmac soon......

Id go for what ever you can afford with a LS1 in it. Lots of improvements in power and economy over the ole 5 litre.
Best to buy the newest you can afford, and make it your own.
Just my two cents, good luck.

When you say "VU" Clubby I'm assuming you mean the model after the VT? i.e. VX Clubby? If that's the case, then I'm in the exact same position as you are. I've been trying to decide whether to buy a VX Clubby, or a newer VY SS as prices of each are relatively similar.
VY is obviously newer in all departments. But for me, I have always loved everything about the VX Clubsport, the look, the shape (even more so than the VY Clubsport!), the fact that it's a HSV... so if I were you, I'd go for the VX.
However it all depends on what is the most important thing(s) to YOU regarding what YOU want in a car. If it's a newer looking dash that seals the deal for you, then go the VY. But really, you need to be 100% sure on what you want your car to be like.
I'd like driving VY SS, but I know that I'd LOVE driving a VX Clubby. And based on that, if I bought a VY SS because a really good one happened to come along, in 6 months time I'd probably be disappointed at myself because I'd still be wanting that VX Clubsport that I've always wanted.
Hmm... just read the topic of your thread and you say "1998 Clubby". I may have gone down the wrong track talking about VX's. Well, if that's the case then DEFINATELY go the VY SS. VT's are just a little bit too old in my opinion. But why not look at the VX Clubby's over the VT's as they're in a similar price range to the VY SS'? I test drove a silver VX Clubsport R8 at Barloworld Holden in Glen Waverley only just 2 weeks ago that had Leather AND Sunroof which was going for $25,990! Drove great and fantastic price... just had a few too many kms on it for me though - 123,000kms. Maybe give 'em a call mate to see if it's still there - 9550-5888... ad HERE (http://www.carpoint.com.au/used-car/HSV/CLUBSPORT/Victoria/1917563.aspx) (says $27k in the ad, but they admitted they'd go down to $25k).
Are there major differences going with HSV over standard Holden??
In regards to that question, well I can't give you a technical answer on that but if you were to compare a '98 HSV Clubsport to a '98 Holden Commodore Executive, then your answer is yes. But comparing a '98 Clubsport to a 2002 VY SS, the well let's just say that the clubby puts out 195kw at the flywheel, whereas the SS puts out 235kw.
Plus your insurance will be cheaper for a VY SS over a VT Clubsport due to the "HSV" badge.
Hope that helps.

I think that the 98 VT had the old 5 litre.
If thats the case go the SS.

Definently go the VY regardless of the Clubby being either 5L or the series II LS1.
VY = Much newer car, everything (should) be in much nicer newer condition...definently go the VY if money etc isn't a problem.
Why buy a car that is 4-6 years older just to have HSV badges...

With the power you are able to make with an LS1 compared with the 308, I wouldn't touch the old 5.0L - you will be kicking yourself later.

VY SS all the way mate. get yourself a low K one if possible. You may pay a little more but the condition will be better.
Picked mine up with all the factory trims (glass roof, full leather, etc) for 32k.

You should'a done a poll Bwah, but it looks as though the VY SS is the clear favourite!
That's awesome feedback, ta heaps.
Most people clearly favour the VY SS.
Clearly, given the current fuel manipulative rubbish, this is an emotional decision, not an intelligent financial one, and I may kick myself for not going the HSV.
As I don't know much about HSV against standard Holden, I thought the handling, brakes, power, look and feel of a clubby would be factors, but no-one even mentioned that side of it - so the stock SS must really be a pleasure on the tarmac.
Remember...this is going to be my first Holden! (can't wait)
Also - the VT II and VX, basic research I've done talk about having the 5.7. Does that put a spanner in the works?
An older Clubby that VY put still 5.7 to play with.
Thanks heaps for your feedback.

Just to put that spanner in the 'works' for ya mate.... I do like the look of the clubby's, but...... check out my VY on the My Ride forum. The reason I paid a high price was because the mileage was very low = better condition. Like you... I haven't been in a holden for a very long time and needless to say, I am extremely impressed with the build quality of the VY SS. I also have a thing for full leather interior now (don't go funny on me) as I was spoilt driving a BMW for a couple of years and the build quality of those machines is very high. Not saying that the clubbies are any less in quality but for around the same price .. clubbie vs VY. the VY is a lot newer.
I don't know if the clubbies come with a factory alarm system but my VY did and it even tells me if someone has tried to break in and exactly where they tried to break in !(comes up on the digital dash)
Best of luck deciding fella....:)
Reading the New Motor Mag today, came across an advertisement for fitting superchargers et al to stock 6s and 8s with outrageous power results - 400KW!!!
For 3 to 5 grand, turning your standard car into a rocket surely must need bigger brakes, suspension for the thrust on rears, maybe struts for the engine bay etc. Can you just pump up the engine? How does the standard gear box deal with such power?? They even claim 300KW on the standard 6, that puts your S class with mods into the high end of the Holden power range.
I imagine the risks are parts failure and warranty void - can you get insurance for these? Just cars?
I had an XR6 Turbo company car, was a good machine, but had to go in 3 times in 6 months for an entire day each time (was almost new too!) so that really bothered me. Reading about the VE today in motor and the other day in the Age Drive, both reported much better driving from the Auto 6 over the manual. What frustrated me in the turbo was the turbo lag and the fact that I couldn't dump the clutch, so a powerful machine was only moderate off the line.
I keep looking for a Manual in my VY and Clubby searches, is it worth considering an Auto? I imagine traffic driving is easier, but I would think I"m getting a Holden to get it a little sideways.....
Ta for feedback all, much appreciated,
Bwah

/ how much do you want. the more you spend, the more you can have.

Still running standard brakes on mine.. no probs. however, did install strut.

Mines fully insured (including the blower) thru Zurich for 50K replacement.

Do a search thru the forum on manual vs auto, turbo vs blower, etc.. there are pro's and con's for both worlds.:)

dont worry the auto has no problem going sideways (just dont do it on the road mate) i see your new to this forum, this is only obvious because you seem very surprised by things that are very common around here
so basically do a search as just mentioend and you'll be reading threads for hours learning new things the whole time!
enjoy

VY SS for sure, newer shape and interior.
a late model VX Clubby I would consider, but not a VT against the VY SS.
I got my VY SS about 8 weeks ago and I love it.
