Have just bought a new SS Thunder with hard tonneau.
have had it through a brushless car wash ans water came in the back.

I accept that the water pressure at these's washes may be to high. Yesterday I washed at home using our house pump (water tanks only up here) and there was more water in the back then when I used the car wash.

Did not point the hose up under the edge of the cover and water pressure is less than normal town water pressure.

The dealer says they are not water proof but only for the rain. Well if you can not wash at home with out water getting in to your tools and gear it is useless.

Has any one gone through this before and can offer suggestions.

I travel with my work through the coal fields so take a stereo system , clothes and other needs and if it is all going to get wet every time there is heavey rain it is not what I need.

Hey Wormie, i went through the same thing when i got my VU SS. Never had a problem with heavy rain but i make sure there is nothing in the tray when i go to wash the car.

I have noticed with mine that the majority of the water gets in at the front behind the window when i wash so if you notice the same thing then maybe some better sealing can be done there. I havent bothered cause mine isnt a daily anymore.

They all leak with rain (especially when parked) & when washing. The most water comes through where they cut the seal either side of the hard lid hinges. On both my dad's vy ss & my z Maloo r8 we have replaced the seal & used ample sika silicon in the right places, so they r watertight.

I've got the standard soft tonneau and it doesn't leak at all unless i face the hose right at the join under the back window. Maybe i was just lucky and got a good one? lol

Soft tonneaus are just about leak proof from my experience with them.Just that you cant lock em up!

Ive installed a hardcover(as per the brand) and will have to spend some time mucking with some thicker foam rubber/silicone along the back and at the fibreglass fill strips just below the rear cabin trim panel. It still leaks at these points.Nothings perfect I suppose.

Whilst on the subject on the rear of utes I wouldnt recommend a plastic tray liner UNLESS you bother to put some rubber or rubber stripping along the high points of the tray.I didnt and after some months of use dirt and grit got under the liner and scratched the tray down to the metal in some spots. If you cant be bothered going to this effort a much cheaper alternative is a straight rubber liner from a ute specialist shop OR get some of the better quality thicker rubber from Clarks. Not cheap but about the same price and they still both have to be cut anyway. If your going to carry loads of rubbish in the back its probably a good idea to leave the sides on the rubber so it protects the sides of the tray area. Its worked for me so far.Its easy to remove and clean undereath. If you go the Clarks rubber it could be a bit heavier though.

After all most if us will have to actually use our utes for what they were designed for at some stage and its a pity to go to the extent of spending a few hundred on a liner only to find its trashed the tray anyway.

As others have said - they all leak.

If you have stuff in the back that you dont want to get wet - when you park the car, make sure you car faces uphill. That way no water 'pools' against the rear window and then leaks into the back if it rains.

Mine is the same I dont think there is really that much you can do about it. However, if it is leaking heaps of water take it back and get it checked. There shouldnt be too much at all

I agree with SSute, I installed mine and have had no problem, even when pressure cleaned sensibly it does not leak. It may be worht checking all the edge sealers and replace where needed.

Mine leaks in the rain and during washing. I have had it back to Holden 3 separate times to fix this and each time they have come up with various excuses and still done nothing.

It has ranged from ordering in the seals (fair enough), to only 2 of the three parts of the seals has come in, to we actually ordered the wrong (slimline hard cover) seal kit in.

I am going in for the final bout tomorrow... Will let you know how it all goes.

By the way, mine leaks at the front at the two hinge points...

i was always of the impression the hard cover is basically there so you can lock your gear in, if you want it too be practically waterproof you need to get a soft cover.

I dont have alot of experience with the hard covers, but that was always my understanding.

Still ... you'd imagine a hard cover to be more practical then the traditional softy by means of lockable and waterproof but here we are :burnout:

I had a soft cover and it leaked like a siv. My hardcover only leaks when i wash it. If you get in the back with with a torch and shut the lid and get some one to hose it you can see where it comes in and put a bit of extra sillicone in. Thats what i did and it healped alot but my hardcover is jsut the normal one not an ssz/thunder hard cover so they maybe different and maybe leak more then the normal cover

Is this a hard cover issue with utes in general or is it just Holden ones? Anyone know??

I have the same problem but when it first happened i had Holden change the rubber seals and fit it properly and yes the water that got in was reduced buy not stopped ....... and oh yeah the corners of the cover now rub - which is the worst of the two evils??????

Good to see that others have a water problem!! mine is ok to wash but if you open the cover when its wet water piss's in.

This is my second SS ute, the new one is a nice yellew Thunder.

My biggest problem with the hard cover is the key locks. They are crap when it rains & your trying to lock or unlock it & the key wont go in & your worried about scratching the paint!!!!!

Has anyone seen a remote locked hard cover??

My boys tell me there is a green vy/vz ute getting around Melbourne's western suburbs with signwriting on the back...advertising remote tonneau locks.
They just can't remember what the website address is that was advertised.

REMOTE TONNEAU LOCKS!!!!
Thats what I need!!!

Or can there be a way to include the tonneau cover with the remote central locking?
Coz I'm already sick of the two locks supplied. :banghead: Drives me crazy!

As said previously before
Any info?......

Cheers Fridgy
